Parents had family friends over for dinner. Had some sparkling shiraz, and then some pinot noir. The sparkling shiraz is cool, but I like red with more kick than the pinot noir had.

You'd probably like dago red.  Basement brew.  Some of it sucks, but when the guy knows what he's doing, its surprisingly good.

Its kinda funny, because the first time you get offered it, you think what the fuck is this shit...  this guy is offering me some basement dreck and I'm suppposed to say how good it is...  Okay, I'm game.       It comes in a friggin used wine bottle, for fucks sake.  It just seems like its gonna be shitty.  How can it NOT be shitty?

But then you get a whack, and its really powerfully flavored.  Like a deep red wine with a splash of purple grape juice in it.  Its like Supergrape.  Kinda like when someone goes crazy making powerful coffee and puts five extra scoops into the coffee filter, it rocks your head back with the blast of flavor.

It leaves viscous legs down the inside of the glass, like heavy reds would do, and the alcohol is generally way past what normal wines would contain.  It goes okay on ice, obviously a no-no in the more gentrified circles.  Its a lot of fun if you disregard the refinements you've developed from tasting what you've been conditioned into regarding as "good".

You know I'm not one of those people who says "Ah yes, I taste the gentle waftings of pecan. Was 2003 a particularly sunny year?"

Stopped off for some Sapphire, tonic, and limes today, which I am enjoying right now.  Tomorrow Boyfriend and I are going to spend the entire day with my family, and we're bringing wine.  I hope we're not the only ones.

I went out with some coworkers after work yesterday.  The bar closed at 6 PM (we got there around 4) so it was a race against time.  We started ordering buckets of Corona and Heineken until they closed...good times :)

I made the mistake of mentioning I read a few recipes for pumpkin cocktails earlier.

Tonight, I'm just drinking black tea, but I'll be gathering the ingredients for pumpkin margaritas and pumpkin rum punch, so the experimenting can take place over the next few days.

These recipes...you must share them.

The pumpkin rum punch, sure. the ingredient sound like a reasonable combo.
http://www.drinkswap.com/drinks/detail.asp?recipe_id=8649

The margarita is a bit frightening. Tequila & pumpkin? I think Mr. Joy ought to be the test subject.

You let us know how Mr. Joy turns out after that test run.

The pumpkin rum punch (recipe in quote) is delicious. Made a couple to go with brunch. Will be making more throughout day, as needed.
Socialist hippy mother-in-law coming over later with her anticapitalist, unionized chatterbox of a significant other, so I'll be going through a lot of it.
As a plus, I'm able to tell myself I'm doing myself good, thanks to the nutritional value of the pumpkin and unfiltered apple cider.

Haven't tried the margaritas yet. Will have to go to the liquor store, to get a pumpkin liqueur first, unless I can figure out the right blend of spices to mix with the puree.  :? Maybe pumpkin pie spice and vanilla?

starbucks cafe verona blend made in my cuisinart coffee pot at home.  fresh ground, of course.  made with 33F filtered water at a rate of 1oz. whole coffee beans per 2 cups of water, sweetened with 7 tablespoons of splenda which is added directly to the pot prior to brewing.
