The only thing you can blame yourself for is being stupid enough to join in the first place. Just like me. But, still there is no excuse for stupidity. Age does not factor into it. Either something is stupid to do and should not be done or it is not.
The stakes are very high when it comes to the stupid mistake of joining up. That is why the lesson must take on a very personal and aggressive approach. Getting spat upon sends a very clear and understandable message. Stupidity does not excuse ones bad behavior.
What I don’t understand is how people here can get so pissed off at cops but not members of the military. The military dudes are far worse. They should be shunned and treated as lepers.
I agree with everything you've written in this thread. The only difference between us, regarding this subject, is that I was never in the military. I despised government when I was young, and my hatred has only grown over the years. I despise all government employees, at any level, including the local dogcatcher. But the insidious nature of an overbearing government, that has its tentacles into everything, puts me in a dilemma -- several of my family members work (or retired) for government: cop, teacher, librarian, school bus mechanic -- and I don't despise them personally, because I can't, they are my flesh and blood.
And I get into discussions with pro-empire friends about politicians screwing up the wars; we heard all this in the Vietnam era too. My point: war is, by its very nature, political. It is started and run by politicians. War is the grand-daddy of all government programs.
There is much more to it than which side has more firepower (if you are not familiar with William Lind's essays on Fourth Generation warfare, look it up, it's quite interesting). If the population at large turns against a war, its days are usually numbered. That's why politicians lie more than usual when it comes to war; the masses must be kept in the dark.
At any rate, I am fucking tired of living in a militarized culture. Everybody "supports the troops" without even thinking about it. It is just natural because we are so militarized. I think a lot of it is leftover guilt from the Vietnam era. Everyone was aghast that Timothy McVeigh would do something so horrible as bombing an entire Federal building full of people. I read a few months ago that some kid was caught waterboarding his girlfriend because he suspected she was cheating on him. I wonder where these people learn this stuff? Haha. THIS BEHAVIOR IS UNACCEPTABLE! Yes, for civilians, but just fine for employees of the government.
Fuck those trillion dollar jets flying over ball games. If that isn't a display of militarism then I don't know what is.
Militarism and nationalism, IMO, are two of several factors that are destroying us.
