I don't know, but I know that the key for me to staying awake is sugar. And I mean sucrose. Buy a case of Mountain Dew Throwback, heh.

You can get it done in two long days, with a decent sleep break in between. I've been driving trucks since '91 and haven't really felt the need to take pills. I did try one of those 5-hour energy drinks the other morning, at about 2 am, and I think the nasty taste kept me awake more than anything.
If you get sleepy, find a safe place to pull over, lay your head on your arm and take a 30 minute power nap. Long enough to rest but not really long enough for your body to shut down for the "night".
That works better than anything else for me.

Also, I download podcasts from here and a few other sites, including some aviation and bicycling stuff. It does a better job of keeping me alert and interested than music does. If you need to stop for a few minutes, by all means stop at a truck stop. Just make sure it ain't a dirty, seedy place, and stay on the car side (I'm assuming you aren't in a truck... if you are, you'd probably know where to go anyway). Find a decently lit place for your nap.

2000 miles in 48 hours isn't bad.  Get out for meals every few hours, and sleep a regular night in a Red Roof.

I just plotted Maine to Dallas TX on goog maps, comes in at 2100 miles and 35 hours drive time.  They obviously use the speed limit in their calculations.

The only problem with the trucker pills is you would normally take them towards the end of the day, when you're feeling wasted from the drive.   Then you can't turn off the head when it comes time to sleep, because they last a while.  Taking them at the beginning of the day is pointless, because you're already up and fine, awake and dandy.  I would have some in my goody bag, but probably wouldn't use them.

2030 miles

I did the trip in 33 hours and 15 mins.

No sleep, no pills. Just Mr dew, throwback   when the store had it.

I left TX at 5:30 pm EST after work on Friday, and got to my destination in ME at 2:45 am Sunday morning. I got 5 hours of sleep last night.

No major issues. I got stuck in some traffic on 84 in CT, and lost about an hour there. I had to deal with a leaking tire as soon as I got to ME, but I still beat the 34 hours Google maps said the trip would take.
