An interesting t6hing was reported on the news tonight. A few generations of corruption in Vernon, CA has a group of people calling for the city itself to be dis-incorporated.
Doesn't make it look like the parasites will be arrested, but less government is always good, right?

It all depends. Will the people that live in this town/city get rid of their "townhood" just to find they dont like not getting their government goodies and "bennies" and later vote to get annexed into another town?
I've seen it happen before. People shutting down the city, then, first little act of burglary or something of that nature, they cry and scream about it. I mean, I myself wouldn't mind at all going it alone, unincorporated, but there are a lot of knuckleheads out there who, in a fit of anger, vote to disband, then get some time to realize they dont have the stones to go it on their own.
Just have to wait and see I guess.

I've never seen it, but being unincorporated seems the way to go. One less level of bureaucracy.

Its easy to say and harder to do. Its not really uncommon, either. Where I live, theres a LOT of little tiny towns, which are a throwback to the olden days.
They disband their police forces, road departments, and all that shit. Then they expect the state cops to haul up the slack, or pay the neighboring municipality to provide those services.
But they never actually reduce the taxes that pay for that stuff, so all you get is a sudden reshuffle to the bottom of the list when filling pot holes, snowplowing, or burglary responses. And when you have to pay a visit to the local municipal building (as rare as that may be), it's closed. People just shrug their shoulders when you inquire who may be the replacement douchebag.
And the cop thing, that's a whole 'nother ball of wax, too. Local cops will show up in a minute, stand around like dicks with their walkie-talkies squawking, take the report, or maybe take a rabblerouser for a ride to the muni building, half-a-mile away. State cops, they'll take an hour to show up, and if they have to show up, someone's gonna be sorry. Their territories are huge, and you could be a hundred miles away ninety minutes later. Good luck talking your way out of that mess.
All you have to see is a plow truck swing a U-turn when it hits the township line, and go back the other way leaving the whole town buried in eighteen inches of snow, and you'll quickly realize who's getting fucked.

Being unincorporated is the way to go.. but to reinforce what janitor is saying, not being a nosy neighbor or authoritarian is only one sort of virtue: Imprudence towards concerns of security and safety is a serious error in judgment. Getting people to pay for public anything is a pain in the ass.
You essentially have to approach the issue with a consistent mindset of undoing all the bullshit that the state created. This includes, particularly, zoning issues and associated 'public' infrastructure. Of course this ISN'T EASY. Don't be fooled into thinking it will be if your community is full of irresponsible people.
One of the main issues is proximity to roads and utilities in order to maintain them in a cost effective manner. A more libertarian society should utilize resources in a more efficient manner. In new england (VT, NH) you have long winding roads with a lower average population. Savings on infrastructure requires living closer together, but that doesn't mean you need to give up quality in exchange. A handful of private associations would probably be the response to cover issues of security and road maintenance/snow clearing. The competition of associations would determine viable population densities to maximize the desires of residents.
