I work in the energy industry, so I see a lot of data that involves climate.

That is some serious BTUs.

Wait, is your work related to natural gas and the flow there of. If so, I bet we may know some of the same people in the industry.

Ya.  I'm a controller.  You?

I don't know many people, I manage to avoid AGA conferences.  I know a few guys on the phone from Transco and Tennessee, a couple from Columbia.  System operators, and a few field guys.

It is interesting, though, that there is a small core of guys who do this.  Probably only a few thousand.  Thats why I had more than a passing interest in Alaska at one time, they pay top dollar for controllers in AK, since most normal people would rather not go there.

Quick story..  Right after I got divorced, my boss jokingly told me he got a call from a recruiter who wanted to pay six-figures for a controller in Alaska.  He said "Nah, nobody here is interested."  I was really pissed.  Where the fuck would I have spent it?  Five years of hazard pay in a barren, desolate, boring-fuck town, I'd be driving a Porsche with mudflaps and woulda probably paid cash for a condo in Hawaii by now.

I work for the local gas company, Southwest Gas Corp. Not as a controller but in Records Administration. Clerical mostly, with a heavy dose of technical and a bit of physical labor worked in there. Nothing that exciting, but it pays the bills. Gas Ops is located right next to my department and I shoot the shit with the manager over there everyday on smoke breaks.

I've thought briefly of transferring to that department as a controller. They would train me and get me up to spec. But the controllers work strange hours. Something like 10 or 12 hour days for three weeks in a row with the fourth week off. The manager explained it a why awhile back. The idea is to have the same person managing the flow for a longer time for better accuracy on the take if I understood him right. Seems to much butt busting for me, I like my 8-5, Monday through Friday.

My side story:
Have you seen the video for the Pepcon incident? (We don't use the word "explosion") SWG was tangled up in court over this for years. What saved them was a guy shooting a porn video that was filming out in the desert and that just happened to have his camera pointed in that direction when the incident took place.  Just one of the hidden benefits of porn.

I saw a show about this explosion on something like the discovery channel. They recreated the explosion using computer modeling to figure out it was basically spontaneous combustion that started it. I believe there was something unique about the arrangement that allowed the explosion to be as huge as it was. They never mentioned porn, but did say the video was caught by people making a movie as memory serves.

Actually, the large explosions were caused by liquid rocket fuel.

Edit:
Come to think about it, I should not be talking about this. Brain fart. Oops.

Update #4

Paperwork previously mentioned has been processed.  Everythings cool, I'm workin' my mojo.

On track for late April goal.  I'm having a hard time concentrating on this at work.  Too many distractions, and I find the CNBC trading shows to be helpful because they give insight to the mood of the market.  I like having a live DOW/NASD/S+P ticker and a lot of input regarding sectors and volume.

Luckily, Thursday is my last full 12 hour day for several weeks and I can work from home every day after Noon.

Tomorrow's gonna be hot, though.

Update #whatever.  5, I think.

Well, you have good days, and you have bad days.  Nothing is ever 100% roses.  I fucked up like three times in a row.  I took a major hit by selling a few days ago, and then it took off right after I sold.  Lost out on a nice couple-hundred bucks.  Then, with those minor losses (I didn't really lose much, but I lost out on a large gain), I bought another fund and it fuckin' flatlined.  Sat on that for a day, it took a little hop and I bailed with slim profits.  Then I got whacked with a two-day margin fee and it ate my profits, plus a hundred bucks.  Then, I bought a fund and it took a shit in todays trading, went sideways all day, and started to tank, so I sold at a loss and it immediately spiked the minute I sold.  Lost out there.  Finally, I bought a long term Bull on the drop today, it should run up on Monday or Tuesday, but now I'm hearing the sector is overbought and ready to capitulate in a profit shedding sell-off, so I might be stuck in it for a few days upside down.  This fuckin sucks.  I'm like 4-0 the last few days, and its eating away at my green in little fucking nibbles.

Still, I'm 2 weeks ahead.

My problem is, I'm not sticking to the plan.  Thats sorta the whole point of having a plan, is sticking to it.

I think its because I have these big giant balls.

Note to self:  Stop striding into battle with nothing but big giant balls.  Big giant balls will get you killed!

Sage advice.

I thought the "He" in the poll was Obama so I picked "he's a dick and I hope he fucks it up" before reading the OP.
Sorry :P

As for gold... I just got done reading "Guide to investing in gold & silver", which is printed under the "Rich Dad/Poor Dad" collection.
All I can say is... WOW. It's like reading an episode of FTL, except it's the same meme being promulgated by people other than selfdescribed talk show dufuses.

I am no longer thinking about betting against IBM. I think it's a sure bet, but I think the opportunity cost of investing RIGHT FUCKING NOW in anything other than precious metals, is just too great.

And I had been buying ETFs. No more of that for me. Bullion, and Gold Eagles, or nothin'. Stocks I'll buy when they really start tanking.

Metals are eventually gonna go up.  But they're gonna come down first.  Governments all around the globe are changing their gold plays to capitalize themselves.  They don't have the loose change to play in it - otherwise it would stay high, because its cheap right now, so they SHOULD be buying it.  The private sector is no longer going 'long' in it, hedging against the market.  As both of these groups emerge from their gold hedge, and other investors are making market plays, it deflates, because nobody wants it.  Its not to say "NOBODY" wants it, thats silly, but its a supply-side economic issue, and it will fall.

Any thoughts about SPDR GLD vs. getting bars-in-a-vault?
