I have to say brain damaged 11 year olds could produce better cartoons than Molly Norris.  I mean really is that what passes for artistic ability now days in the world of political cartoons?  Kind of telling that the leader of the Muslim conference told her he didn't even know anything about her crap.  Boo hoo be very afraid much to do about nothing. 

The reason the original cartoons set off Muslims was the racist nature and derogatory depictions of Muhammad.  How do you think some fundy Christians would have taken a cartoon of a pig nailed to a cross in a frying pan captioned by, "this is your brain on Christianity"?  And that was published in a major publication in an area where Christians felt persecuted as a minority.  It is extremely difficult to understand the pressures placed on minority groups in established cultures.  In Europe it is very difficult for most Muslims to find work the youth riots in France were due to unemployment.  Which they felt was due to racism.  Real cause French socialism and business regulation but that is a different matter.  The French riots seemed very similar to me of the 60s civil rights riots in which black youths looted and burned down businesses.  And honestly none of you sitting safely in the majority in an area can relate.  I have lived in places where being white and Christian was the minority position and the majority was racist toward white Christians.  The experience gave me an entirely new perspective about race and religious persecution.

  What do you think the reaction would be if a racist cartoon of Obama being hung by hooded figures using the n word were to be published in the NY and LA Times?  I suspect that cartoonist would need to fear for their life and there would be riots in the streets.  Especially if the cartoon was defended by the publication and then picked up by other prominent publications claiming the African American community was being irrational for getting upset and protesting over such a cartoon.  I think I would be much safer drawing the former, a cartoon of Muhammad vs drawing the latter.

At lunch Ahmed Ayad, the General Secretary of Muslim Association of the Puget Sound, told me that the main problem he sees with local Muslims is their trying assimilate into Western culture when they look so obviously different (i.e. wearing a head scarf).

And imagine that Dali lived to be a ripe old age without body guards or anything.  Where were the hordes of irrational Muslims seeking to do him a harm.  They even failed to issue a death threat must have dropped the ball on that one.  Side note there is a private Dali museum in Tampa FL.  They have his painting of Columbus discovering America it is fantastic.

It won't happen because people know there would be riots in the streets and lots of blood shed.  Why it is easy to suppose it would happen is because of Jena, LA and the violence which broke out over the hanging of nooses in a tree at Jena high school.  What about freedom of expression and the 1st amendment there?  I only gave you a equivalent cartoon scenario because it is obvious you are incapable of relating to how a cartoon could be so highly offensive to Muslims.  Most likely giving you way too much credit for having an inkling of how offensive a potential cartoon could be to the African American community.

There are many depictions of Muhammad and even some unflattering ones which never set off any Muslim threats or riots.   Like I said before were were the riots and death threats on Salvidor Dali's life due to his depiction of Muhammad?  One person noted how odd it was that when the news broke about the cartoons that Muslims in the Gaza somehow had plenty of Danish flags on hand to burn for the cameras.  Seems like a bit of a setup by some militant radicals who simply wanted to incite a crowd of frustrated Muslim youth and what better location than that to find such a crowd.
