Surprisingly, there's lots of news on this "Swine Flu" http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&safe=off&client=opera&rls=en&hs=nbI&ei=cPvzSf6XIaPQMvnBrbMP&resnum=0&q=swine+flu&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=cvvzSfSjEpX2Mdmg5K0P&sa=X&oi=news_group&resnum=1&ct=title especially as the notification was coming from Paula, who presumably gets all her data from a fax machine.

OH NOES DA SWINE FLUEZ!!  Highest number:  81 dead (http://www.rottingnation.com/2009/04/26/swine-flu-fear-mongering/).  Not an epidemic.  Not a problem.  Not an issue.  Maybe when 100,000 people die we can say there is a problem.  Or even 20,000.

There are no zombies here.

In six months Captain Trips will have cleansed the land, and the Walking Dude will come. Who here will be set high in his artillery?

NVAX was a lottery ticket.  Got beat-down in the crash, never came back.  Traded 10x volume.  It'll probably go further.

JERUSALEM (AP) — The outbreak of swine flu should be renamed "Mexican" influenza in deference to Muslim and Jewish sensitivities over pork, said an Israeli health official Monday.

Deputy Health Minister Yakov Litzman said the reference to pigs is offensive to both religions and "we should call this Mexican flu and not swine flu," he told a news conference at a hospital in central Israel.

Both Judaism and Islam consider pigs unclean and forbid the eating of pork products.

Scientists are unsure where the new swine flu virus originally emerged, though it was identifed first in the United States. They say there is nothing about the virus that makes it "Mexican" and worry such a label would be stigmatizing.

Two Israelis who recently visited Mexico have been hospitalized with symptoms of the flu. Health authorities have not yet confirmed whether they actually have the virus.

The current strain of swine flu is thought to have originated in Mexico where more than 100 people have been killed by the disease so far.

Laboratories in the U.S. and Canada have confirmed that of the samples tested so far, the swine flu virus in Mexico and U.S. appear to be the same.

How insensitive! Are the Jews and Muslims not thinking about the Xenophobes who will be offended by having a Mexican in them?

After I returned from a public health meeting yesterday with community leaders and school officials in Comal County , Heather suggested I send an update to everyone, because what we are hearing privately from the CDC and Health Department is so different from what you are hearing in the media. Some of you know some or maybe all of this, but I will just list what facts I know..

 - The virus is infectious for about 2 days prior to symptom onset

- Virus sheds more than 7 days after symptom onset (possibly as long as 9 days) (this is unusual)

- Since it is such a novel (new) virus, there is no "herd immunity," so the "attack rate" is very high. This is the percentage of people who come down with a virus if exposed. Almost everyone who is exposed to this virus will become infected, though not all will be symptomatc. That is much higher than seasonal flu, which averages 10-15%. The "clinical attack rate" may be around 40-50%. This is the number of people who show symptoms. This is a huge number. It is hard to convey the seriousness of this.

- The virulence (deadliness) of this virus is as bad here as in Mexico , and there are folks on ventilators here in the US , right now. This has not been in the media, but a 23 month old near here is fighting for his life [since the writing of this, the toddler has deceased], and a pregnant woman just south of San Antonio is fighting for her life.  In Mexico , these folks might have died already, but here in the US , folks are getting Tamiflu or Relenza quickly, and we have ready access to ventilators. What this means is that within a couple of weeks, regional hospitals will likely become overwhelmed.

- Some of the kids with positive cases in Comal County had more than 70 contacts before diagnosis.

- There are 10-25 times more actual cases (not "possible" cases -- actual), than what is being reported in the media. The way they fudge on reporting this is that it takes 3 days to get the confirmatory nod from the CDC on a given viral culture, but based on epidemiological grounds, we know that there are more than 10 cases for each "confirmed" case right now.

- During the night, we crossed the threshold for the definition of a WHO, Phase 6 global pandemic. This has not happened in any of our lifetimes so far. We are in uncharted territory.

- I expect President Obama will declare an emergency sometime in the next 72-96 hours. This may not happen, but if it doesn't, I will be surprised. When this happens, all public gathering will be cancelled for 10 days.

- I suggest all of us avoid public gatherings. Outdoor activities are not as likely to lead to infection. It is contained areas and close contact that are the biggest risk.

- Tamiflu is running out. There is a national stockpile, but it will have to be carefully managed, as it is not enough to treat the likely number of infections when this is full-blown. I don't think there is a big supply of Relenza, but I do not know those numbers. If I had to choose, I would take Relenza, as I think it gets more drug to the affected tissue than Tamiflu.

- You should avoid going to the ER if you think you have been exposed or are symptomatic. ER's south of here are becoming overwhelmed -- and I mean that -- already. It is coming in waves, but the waves are getting bigger.

- It appears that this flu produces a distinctive "hoarseness" in many victims. The symptoms, in general, match other flu's; namely, sore throat, body aches, headache, cough, and fever. Some have all these symptoms, while others may have only one or two.

- N-Acetyl-Cysteine -- a nutritional supplement available at the health food store or Wimberley Pharmacy, has been shown to prevent or lessen the severity of influenza. I suggest 1200mg, twice a day for adults, and 600mg twice a day in kids over 12. It would be hard to get kids under 12 to take it, but you could try opening the capsules and putting it on yogurt. For 40 pounds and up, 300-600 mg twice a day, for less than 40 pounds, half that.

- Oscillococinum, a homeopathic remedy, has been vindicated as quite effective in a large clinical trial in Europe , with an H1N1 variant. You can buy this at Hill Country Natural Foods, or the Wimberley Pharmacy.

I will try to keep everyone posted if I have any new information. Meanwhile, don't be afraid just avoid infection. The fewer people infected the easier it will be for our public officials to manage it.

This is really going to put a dent in the Cinco De Mayo festivities down Mexico way. People mass in the streets to shoot fireworks and pass bottles around and shake hands and hug and slap high fives and share food and all that shit, all day long. If they do it while this virus is going around, we're all doomed! I've been down there for May 5, in Nogales, and there's a whole lot of gringos and Mexicans who reside in Arizona, and soldiers from Ft, Huachuca and Davis-Monthan who go down there too. All rubbing up against each other in tight quarters in the streets and dancing in bars and getting bj's in brothels. This could be bad. Very bad.

The one good feature from all this is that the price of pork should drop, since vast numbers of stupid people have stopped eating it, with the mistaken idea that the flu comes from eating pigs.

Maybe from kissing pigs, but certainly not from eating cooked meat.

In fact, not a single pig has yet to be diagnosed with "swine" flu.

The hysteria over this dumbfounds me

Less then a hundred people have died from being infected with Swine

How many people in the last week have died in Africa from Cholera, Typhoid & dysentery?

Yet I don’t hear anybody panicking about that & anyways thousands of people each year die from flu.

Anybody who’s getting their knickers in a twist about Swine Flu is severely insecure

My guess on this one: the powers that be are using the emergence of a new yet fairly uninteresting disease to run what amounts to a global fire drill. I think the panic is being generated as a test to see how the public and governments react to a pandemic situation without the need for a real pandemic to occur. I can also see the high level of awareness of this disease being used to gather data about infection patterns.

That's a pretty big coincidence.

No, it's not.

As I understand it, if you contract and develop influenza with no antibodies to combat it, your immune system goes all out to attack it.  If you do not treat the influenza, it leaves you with a weakened immune system that leaves you open to other viral/bacterial infections.

If thats in reference to me then  know that i'm not a coding geek... maybe an alcoholic but i'm far from a coding geek. I just copied and pasted those statistics. As for coding I am in the progress of learning from the programmers I work with only cuz I recently broke up with my gf and the bar scene is getting in the way of me obtaining the skills to get involved in a decent career.

Dude.  Alex Libman is the alcoholic coding geek with no life.  You need to relax, and stop giving us your biography every time somebody responds to your posts.

According to the CDC, Influenza was the #6 cause of death in the US in 2005, with 63,001 deaths.*

This year, the swine flu has cause 1 death so far, and that was a child who traveled to this country already infected.

very similar in structure to the virus responsible for the 1918 epidemic, no?

This year, the swine flu has cause 1 death so far, and that was a child who traveled to this country already infected.

the virus in 1918 was cited in the spring as being relativley mild.  when flu season came around in the autumn, millions died.
the target wasn't the very young or very old either.  18-35.

I'm not saying panic--I just wouldn't be so brazen about the situation.

watch and see how it shapes up.
wash yer fucking hands.  Keep your distance from germy-looking people.

Getting violently ill has a tendency to put a dent in one's financial stability for a little bit.

OK, time for Professor Libman to take some time off his busy schedule (creating viruses to kill all non-libertarians and whatnot) and teach some Organic Chemistry 101.  Viruses are identified according to the proteins they use to do what they do.  The Hemagglutinin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemagglutinin_(influenza)) type 1 is one of several known methods a virus can use to enter a cell in order to infect it to reproduce itself.  The Neuraminidase (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viral_neuraminidase) type 1 is one of several known methods the virus clones can use to exit the cell to go off in search of more cells to infect.  NHA10 does the very same thing to online forums, so the answer to your question is yes.

Swine flu pandemic declared by World Health Organization

The World Health Organization this morning acknowledged what many health experts have been saying for weeks: The outbreak of novel H1N1 virus is now a pandemic.

In a letter sent to its member countries, the WHO said it is officially raising its infectious diseases alert to Phase 6, its highest level, in recognition of the fact that the virus is now undergoing communitywide transmission in Australia as well as in North America. Such spread in two distinct regions of the world is the primary criterion for raising the alert level.

But the agency said that the pandemic is only "moderate in severity" and cautioned against overreactions to the increased alert level.

The announcement marks the advent of the first global influenza epidemic in 41 years. The last one was the Hong Kong flu epidemic of 1968, which killed an estimated 1 million people worldwide.

So far, the H1N1 or swine flu pandemic this year has accounted for 27,737 laboratory-confirmed cases and 141 deaths, although health officials believe many times that number have been infected but have not been tested because their disease was mild.

A normal seasonal flu outbreak kills about 250,000 to 500,000 people worldwide.

In most industrialized countries, the rise in the alert level will have little practical effect because health authorities were already behaving as though a pandemic had been declared. In the United States, where there have been more than 13,000 cases and at least 27 deaths, "Our actions in the past month have been as if there was a pandemic in this country," said Glen Nowak, a spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But it will accelerate the production of a vaccine against the new virus. Several countries have signed contracts for the vaccine with manufacturers that call for its production if a pandemic is declared. Most of them have received so-called seed stock viruses from the CDC in the past two weeks, allowing them to begin the lengthy process of growing the virus in eggs and producing vaccines. But it will still take a minimum of four to six months for the vaccines to be available for use.

The announcement will have more impact on Third World countries, freeing up additional funds for treatment and prevention and helping to make stocks of antiviral drugs more readily available.

The WHO has hesitated to raise the alert level for fear that such an announcement would be misconstrued as an indication that the virus has become more pathogenic. WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl emphasized today that "Phase 6 doesn't mean anything concerning severity, it is concerning global spread. . . . Pandemic means global, but it doesn't have any connotation of severity or mildness."

In fact, he said, all evidence to date is overwhelming that the virus is mild in its effects. Experts fear, however, that as it passes through populations, it could mutate to become more lethal and return with increased force in the winter influenza season. That is what happened with the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918.

Officials had said they feared that the announcement would lead frightened people who are not really sick to overrun hospital emergency rooms, impairing the healthcare system's ability to treat the truly sick. That has happened in past outbreaks, and there is already some evidence that it is happening in South America, particularly in Chile, where the numbers of infected have been growing.

Dr. Keiji Fukuda, assistant director general of the WHO, also said earlier this week that he fears imposition of travel restrictions, border closing and bans on food imports -- all of which have already happened in the earlier stages of the outbreak.

- President Obama has declared a national emergency to deal with the "rapid increase in illness" from the H1N1 influenza virus.

"The 2009 H1N1 pandemic continues to evolve. The rates of illness continue to rise rapidly within many communities across the nation, and the potential exists for the pandemic to overburden health care resources in some localities," Obama said in a statement.
