Surchages - How The Fuck Do They Work?
« on: May 16, 2011, 12:30:48 PM »

First time entering a contest. How do I handle taxes and "surcharges"?

The Prize - http://www.tomshardware.com/news/cyberpower-power-mega-z68-contest,12742.html#BOM_comments

The Rules - https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dDZmSXBkNWZjbElVOHdWa1ZRSWRtRWc6MA

"All prize winners are responsible for taxes and other surcharges on the prizes they win."

"Surcharges" can be a tricky thing. It can be something as simple as a handling fee to get your prize to you, or something more complicated.

Years ago I got a phone call from some hucksters saying I won first prize in a drawing. I won a 16 ft fishing boat valued at 15k (1989 dollars) and all I had to pay was the shippiing and "surcharges". When I asked how much the shipping and surcharges were, they said it would come to around $8,900.00. I asked "What, are you shipping it from Guatemala?" They said, no, its being shipped from Dallas, TX, so I said "Hey, I have grandparents that live right next to you guys, down in Gainesville, TX, about 60 miles away!!...... I'll just have them pick it up for me and we can skip the shipping charges.'

They got all weird right about then and eventually hung up on me.

Be wary of "surcharges"

If you win a prize, you pretty much pay whatever the retail sales tax would be if you were paying cash for it.

If you win a 1,000. retail value prize, and your states sales tax is 7.5%, just for example, you will pay 75 bucks tax.

Not very complicated.
