Student debt hits One Trillion Dollars
« on: October 27, 2011, 10:43:05 AM »

One trillion dollars works out to about $24,000.00 per student. And guess what kids? THERE'S NO JOBS! Even high-tech jobs have all been out-sourced to places like India. I wonder, how many big mac burgers one has to flip to pay back 24 grand? DUH? No wonder they're rioting!

Thats exactly why they need to get the govt out of guaranteeing students money for college.

Why? The banksters love it!

Yeah, education should be free for everyone.

The schools love it to. They can charge ridiculous tuition and they know people dont care because the govt guarantees the loan.

Don't worry.  Obama's working on a bailout for them too.

Fortunately the US FedGov has plenty of money to use to forgive this debt and prop up the banks. Imagine if we had to borrow an extra trillion....

Wow.  So many screwed up people.  It would be nice if much of the culture in the US didn't encourage such horrible decisions.  The kids aren't alright.

So, the debt the average student ends up with is about the price of a cheap new car. And yet, many young people still buy new vehicles without demanding that the government pay off the car loan.

Unless you are going into some specific career demanding the education of a college, it is a waste of time and money. If you DO go for something like doctoring or engineering, then you will probably make enough money to pay off your loans. If you spend four years studying Art History or English Literature (my major), then you just throwing away your money.

BTW, I paid for my private college as I went, without any loans, but that was back when you could still afford a school.

English Literature
Awesome. I seriously debated English Lit as my major... because I was (and still am) totally infatuated with the genius of James Joyce.

I eventually realized two things:
1) I would wind up reading & educating myself on JJ's works even without needing to for my major, and
2) Chemical Engineering pays a hell of a lot better

Of course, after I graduated, there were no jobs in Chem Engineering that I was willing to take (I had a personal "no oil or pesticide companies" rule). Good thing I also picked up that Comp Sci major, just as the dotcom bubble got ready to inflate. Profit!

Chemical engineering? Good choice. I have a brother-in-law who went into that. Not only did he quickly pay off his loans, but he is now the VP of an oil company. Seeing his success, his youngest sister also went into the field, and now makes excellent money as a startup engineer for power plants. (She works on the SO2-removal systems.)

I was already set in a good paying job before I started college, and never expected to make a living from English Lit. Other than teaching, I’m not sure what one would do with it. (Just before graduating, I was offered a teaching post at a Catholic girl’s high school, which I’m sure is not nearly as much fun as it sounds. Nor would it have paid nearly as much as I was earning at the time.)

BTW, my college was also an all-women school, which had just gone co-ed. There were just two males in the entire 300 student body. I’d advise any young man to consider going to an all-women’s college!

The word "job" just grates the hell out of me. I want a job. Where are the jobs. Jobs are harder to get. Etc.

Go find, or make yourself work.

As to the whole college thing, I would say let the banks eat up their losses from bankruptcies, but student loans don't get forgiven.

I agree. Make yourself marketable. That includes not only gaining job skills that are useful, but making sure you look and act like someone competent to do the job. Show up for work on time and ready to go. Agree to work the extra hours. Learn all you can about the job.

And, you don't need four or six years of college to do it. I know plenty of guys who earn excellent money in careers they entered right out of high school. One fixes air conditioners and does natural gas installations on the side for a thousand bucks a job. He earns 80K a year. Another went into plumbing right out of high school and now owns his own small business, along with three homes, including a vacation house in North Idaho. Yet another started out a short-order chef and now owns two restaurants. No college, but they were all workers.

My son-in-law is a software developer for Microsoft. No college, but he's good at what he does and earns excellent money. "I can't believe they pay me to do this job," he told me.

I am one of those students will tons of student loan debt.

I wasn't liberty-minded at the time I went to college and let my head get filled with propaganda to go to a state-run flight school to get a degree in commercial aviation instead of going to a private flight school. Needless to say, the place was a disaster, the airplanes were flying pieces of junk and the technology was woefully out of date.

They only had two airplanes equipped for complex maneuvers training and both of them broke at the same time one semester and I didn't get to fly much at all that semester because of that. They announced that we'd have to repeat that syllabus and I sat down and made the decision that it was going to be way too expensive to stay down there an extra semester and that my prospects of getting a job flying for the airlines was pretty dim.

Now I'm attending the college in my hometown. I live with my parents and I work 40 hours a week to pay for school out of pocket. I still have 100K in loans waiting for me when I graduate and I regret taking them out, but I don't blame other people for my bad decisions and I hope to be in New Hampshire soon working out of Boston and making a better life.

Interesting angle, Pilot_MKN.  I'd say you have a complaint coming--you got inadequate service for your money.  Of course, the beef would be with the service provider.  Interesting how that's government--worst customer service in the history of "business."

I'm mad at how easy it is for students to get loans and all the propaganda to go to college for BS degrees but at the end of the day I didn't do enough research and I got suckered in.

I'm working on a degree in accounting now (and I wonder how other liberty minded people feel about that)
