It's a bald-faced lie.

He does tend to be a bit sweeping with his generalities. Nothing new there. But he's definitely onto something.

I always thought main purposes of martial arts were to 1. develop character and 2. learn self-defense (matching offensive-aggression with righteous defensive-aggression)

Alot of abused women also learn martial arts not to punch someone, but to defend themselves.

I'm fairly certain that is the pitch, yes. I think he even acknowledges as much.

Stefans thesis may be way too vague. He might need to specify age, gender, social class, and branch of MA. Classical Martial Arts doesnt seem like a first choice sport one would learn to attack people. Though MMA or Boxing maybe.

Did you watch his video? I don't think I watched it all the way through because it didn't feel particularly relevant to me, but I don't think that was his point at all. I think he was just pointing out that it's primarily pursued as a type of knee-jerk reaction to abuse, and that it's not a particularly healthy or productive reaction. He's not calling people aggressors for pursuing it. He's just saying they're failing to address the real personal problem in an emotionally healthy manner. Something like that.

Its a bit like saying just about all people who buy a Ferarri, are doing so because they have a small penis. While that may be true in a lot of cases, I'd bet the majority of people buy one because they, one, have the cash and two, just think they're cool cars.

I get the point he's trying to make here, its just a moot one.

This is precisely why you'll never win a gold medal in synchronized swimming.

If you have a group of people, who were never bullied or abused in any way, they would probably not be interested in violent activities. I noticed in Norway, where anti spanking laws have been in effect to the third generation, young people are less interested in violent stuff. The problem is we are starting to have a lot of people who don't know how to deal with violent pychopaths. They have a complete lack of defensive instincts.

With that said, I would love to have a Ferarri and I definately would look pretty out of place on a porn set.

In fact, Hatemi’s findings often defy expectations: he’s looked at competitors in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, a mixed martial arts sport, and found that none of them had the warrior gene, yet the vast majority of Buddhist monks he genotyped did have the warrior gene. “Clearly [the monks] chose an environment that would then repress any possible interaction with any kind of liability for increased violence, which we thought was fascinating,” he says.
