starting a libertarian outreach organisation
« on: February 23, 2006, 02:50:38 AM »

In the future I want to start a libertarian outreach organisation, to try and challenge the statist mindset out there.

How would I go about doing this?  I think the first thing is funding.  I'd need money in order to run my operation.  Where would I get it?

Before funding, you need an idea.  Chances are your idea is already being done by another libertarian organization.  Chances are they are short on workers or funds (usually both).  I suggest you help them out by giving your time or helping to get funds.

Yes there is, but they don't do outreach as such.  They concentrate their efforts on appealing to the political class rather than appealing to the average Joe.

you know I always thought that I should write a good libertarian political activist handbook.  I have got about half a dozen books on organizing grassroots campaigns and other political activites but they are all aimed at liberals, environmentalists and all those nutjobs and not for us sane people.

I found these a while ago.  some of these speeches have some real good advice.

Here is all of them, others have some good advice that would help you.

Here are a few books that might help.
Troublemaker's Tea Party by Charles Dobson
Rules for Radicals  by Saul D Alinsky
The Art of Political Warfare by John J. Pitney
Fundraising: Hands-on Tactics for nonprofit groups by L. Peter Edles

Some organizations have guides on how to organize an organization.  Most of them are left-wing but the tactics and stuff would still work.

lapafrax is right, there's almost no libertarian outreach in Britain, and libertarianism is seen as a "barbaric American ideal which is antithetical to the operation of a civilised society like our socialist paradise."  However, there are lots of people fed up with ever-soaring taxes and fees for shitty public "services," and who are open to alternatives.  Such a libertarian outreach would need to soar under the radar.

There's also a unique opportunity to present libertarianism -- real libertarianism -- as a new policy pillar for the lost-at-sea Tory party, and put some of its practices into effect when the Tories win a government (which is only a matter of time).

I don't know if it is a waste of time.  The UK is an extremely brainwashed society toward socialism and this isn't to say that America isn't becoming just as brainwashed.  You might have a better shot at pushing certain profreedom issues rather than the whole idea of Libertarianism.  Many UK citizens seemed to be against the war on drugs.  Frame your arguments around it being an insane import of American imperialistic policy against people.  Doing this you can capitalize on anti-American sentiment.  Join Marijuana activist and injecting your ideas of liberty into their organizations you might make some headway.

If that isn't an issue that interest you go after another one that has some chance of gaining some traction.  When anyone ask you how you came to your position then tell them that it developed out of Libertarianism.  Whenever talking about Libertarianism only talk about the philosophy and not the origins to the philosophy. (Leave any mention of America out of the discussion or skim over it very quickly but only if you are asked a pointed question).

I had a very frustrating discussion with UK citizen in a trainride across Southern England about gun rights.  He never grasped that when people are disarmed they are nothing more than subjects of the whims of their government.  He couldn't comprehend that a person like Hitler could ever come to power in Britain and that the people would be defenseless against that kind of tyranny if they are already disarmed.  He also didn't agree that a homeowner had the right to defend themselves from home invitation by gangs.  Which was relevant at the time because an elderly farmer was up on charges for shooting a 16 year old boy who broke into his home with a duck gun.  The other kids that had been with him fled and this wasn't the first time the man had been attacked by this group.  I was fighting a propaganda machine that told people this was not self-defense but vigilantism.  I wouldn't suggest that gun rights is a good issue to win any traction.

Actually, there are already outreach organizations out there that have the goal of reaching the average person. The Advocates for Self-Government does a great job with this sort of thing. Your time might be better spent getting involved with their programs.

People in Britain are doofuses.

We had full gun rights for decades until the Dunblane incident, yet no such mass shootings occured.

I once got a gay man so angry that he threatened to punch me.

What did I say?

I said that I didn't want antidiscrimination laws personally because I'd rather work for an organisation that values my work and the money I bring in than one which hates gays but has hired me only because the law forced them to.

"You fucking wanker!  Not everyone can do good work or make money for a company!  You want to take away MY PROTECTIONS!  I could fucking punch you right now!" etc., etc., etc.

Don't forget Britain does have a libertarian group called the Libertarian Alliance: http://www.libertarian.co.uk
