Title: stamping currency
Post by: james on April 22, 2007, 11:48:28 AM
We can promote the website by writing www.freetalklive.com on cash.

I mean, it's just a piece of paper, and we wouldnt even be breaking the law (and who cares, some of us pay for the government to make the damned money)

so... yeh theres a cheap and easy way to advertise the site.

you know im surprised the government doesnt sell advertising space on dollar bills as it is... I wouldn't put it past them.

Get a stamp. It's way easier than writing it, I know. There is a thread about it in here.

It's fun to get your bills back. I actually got one that was stamped that wasn't mine. That was really neat.

Where/when was it? It seems to have been an isolated incident. Is there any possible way to tell how effective this is? I stamp almost all mine, but I really have no idea what effect it has, if any.

I got an FTL-stamped $1 bill back as change from a Mexican restaurant in Nashua, NH, where I go for lunch pretty frequently.
That was badass, so I started leaving NHCommonSense (http://nhcommonsense.org) matchbooks with my tip there ;)

There's an idea for a store item--a Free Talk Live stamp for stamping the currency.

Here, in Keene. I got them back in Florida when I stamped too. It doesn't happen all the time, but enough to know they are circulating. Every once in a while, a curious cashier writes down the link.

If you get a batch of crisp new ones, I'd say they will probably run through some printers very well.  I know they'd run through the old Bubblejet I used to have--that had to be the best inkjet I ever owned.

I run'em through the printer all the time.  While it's printing the green and black, it might just as well print a "Free Talk Live" tag in red.

Rock on. I had a cannon BJ something back in the day, I guess 10 years ago or so. It was pretty cool. Then we had this crappy all-in-one HP that did a lot, but nothing very well ;)

Today I have a freaky Lexmark that isn't compatible with BSD and only works with Linux after you do a bunch of cryptic stuff. Next time? Probably a HP or Cannon that is more universally compatible.

Uhh.. I run a cash only business..

What if I did say.. $5,000 in cash? ($1's $5's, $10's, and $20's) Do you think the bank would uhh.. freak out if I did that?

Or do I have to nickle and dime the money around?

Inkjet works well if you iron the money first. Go to the bank and get a stack of singles and keep a few in your wallet. Here's an earlier thread about it.

1 - It's not *their* money
2 - It'd be weird for a business to say they didn't want your money
3 - It's completely legal (imho...I'm not a lawyer, but the law is pretty clear that you have to INTEND for the bills to be put out of circulation, which of course is the opposite of your intent).

I say go for it!  I got my stamps from VistaPrint...I like them.

USE RED.  It shows up very nice on the green and black.

My understanding is that it is legal as long as it doesn't block the serial #s. Banks mark all the time so... I've partially covered a few digits nearly every time, and no one cares.

These days I'm no longer using inkjet for my own use (except to print something out in color, once in a blue moon, for which I use my wife's piece-of-crap Epson all-in-one), I got an HP LaserJet 4050N new on eBay for $500 and slapped a duplexer onto it.  It's a $2000 office printer, and I've never had a single problem.  I got tired of crappy cheap printers.  Besides being reliable, I can get a 10,000 page cartridge for around $120.  That's a lot better economy than anything else I've had (including the crappy Lexmark personal laser printer I made the mistake of buying) and for the startup cost I also got built-in networking and duplexing capability (and the toner's better.)

I'll do that, I'll start by marking my change and my pay out money.

I think the banks might freak out if I give them a couple huge fat wads of marked bills for deposit.
