Because you live in a territory that is controlled by the US government. You can choose to leave at any time, yet you don't.
Have you given up your US citizenship yet? Until you do, you are regarded as a US citizen.
But you probably won't, because if you ever find yourself stuck in another country you'll just try to get in contact with the US embassy to get out, or you'll want to take advantage of the pros of living in the USA.
Keep in mind, under US law someone who's a citizen *is* allowed to renounce it at any time if he or she wishes to. Why don't you formally renounce your American citizenship, if you hate the government that granted you it so much?
