The incidence of mouth and throat cancer from pipes is less than that from cigars - and from cigars it's abysmal. You're more likely to get cancer from breathing car exhaust in traffic.

I've read the article above a couple years back. There is a much healthier method to it all and this answer lies in home grown marijuana, but the problem with marijuana is that it doesn't help when you are trying to lose weight. It's hard to have the best of the two worlds.

I've heard if you ignore it, it goes away eventually. I've never been able to find out.

There is one thing I have noticed about most people who smoke tobacco: They all have this, "dude shut up" attitude. They are always angry about something, and a happy/optimistic guy like me just enrages them even further.

That said, if I am going to smoke anything, it is going to be weed in a vaporizer.

I was skinnier when I smoked weed like a maniac.  I think it was because I would rather have pot in my lungs than food in my mouth  :)

The purple abdominal line comes from slouching on a chair or sit-ups.

Yeah, my efforts to start smoking have been a miserable failure, especially since the place where I'm gulching would require me to get my ass outside to smoke - that's like 20 fucking feet!  Waaaay too much effort...

Maybe this Slashdot story will finally inspire me to get my act together -- Nicotine Improves Brain Function In Schizophrenics --

Quote
An anonymous reader suggests a Cosmos Magazine note that nicotine has been shown to enhance attention and memory in schizophrenics.  Research is now aimed at developing new treatments that could relieve symptoms and prevent smoking-related deaths.

"A strong link between schizophrenia and smoking -- with over three times as many schizophrenics smoking (70 to 90%) as the population at large -- prompted scientists to investigate the link.  Researchers led by Ruth Barr, a psychiatrist at Queen's University in Belfast, Northern Ireland, set out to find if the nicotine in cigarettes was helping patients to overcome their difficulties with cognitive function, such as planning and memory in social and work settings."

My grandfather who smoked cigars died at the age of 92.  My great uncle who smoke cigarettes died at the age of 85.   My great grandmother who smoked lived to be 102 years old.  I don't know if she counts because she quit at the age of 88.  She got afraid of falling asleep with a lite cigarette.   There are more but most lived well into their 80s.

Of my non-smoking family.  My grandfather who never smoked died at the age of 72.  My step-father who was a health fanatic, jogged and never smoked died of brain cancer at the age of 64.   My uncle who never smoked an went to MIT on a full scholarship died at the age of 24 due to a embolism.    He was working on his doctorate at the time.  There are more from this group and only my grandmother who never smoked is still with us at the age of 95.

I have a really odd family no one who died of cancer was a smoker.  All most all died from either old age or a circulatory problem.  The odd one out was my Father who smoked a pipe and died at the age of 39 not from cancer but from a brain injury from an accident.

I smoke rarely like if I go out for drinks I might have one cigarette.   Or if I stressed out.  A pack generally lasts me 6 months.  There just isn't room for people to be considered moderate smokers.

Smoking will generally lead to earlier death than not smoking, so I'd say that it's not good for you.

Yeah, because life is a competition in which the goal is to live as long as possible. What's the prize for the winner?

Nicotine is an addictive agent.  Of course a schizophrenic with an addiction will feel better and behave better if he feeds his jones.

Yeah, this. See, I go through phases, sometimes I smoke 3 or 4 smokes in a day (my absolute upper limit) then I go for months without smoking at all. Years even. Then I'll pick it up again for a little while, if times are stressful, or if I'm around certain people who smoke a lot, especially if I am frequenting a certain drinking establishment where adherence to the "ban" is spotty at best. Then at some point, I've had enough, I'm not enjoying them anymore, and I quit. I can moderate it, I can pick them up or put them down whenever. It's no big deal, and it's never become a hardcore addiction for me. Which is good, considering all that heart surgery I had to have.

Actually, smoking cigarettes raises levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which increases alertness and improves memory functioning. Some newer studies have shown that schizophrenics have lower levels of acetycholine. It's one of the reasons why people who try to quit smoking experience fuzzy headedness.
