Because Rob goes through periods of crazy.  When he does this, he makes veiled threats of violence, spams entire boards needlessly with random subjects, trolls other threads with complete jibberish nobody understands, and basically acts like an asshole.  This is a tolerant place, but it stretches the tolerance to its limits.

In other places, sister forums if you will, he has been banned completely.  This alone underscores the tolerance here.  Too many people get the wrong impression of "virtually unmoderated".  This does not mean anything goes.  It should not be expected to mean anything goes.  This is an online community owned by a private interest, who has a financial stake in this forum, as it is the online presence of a nationally syndicated radio show.  As such, it has over time morphed slightly to reflect the owners ideology which is basically that of an ancap community.  A few of us have voluntarily accepted the task of acting in the best interests of the community standard as we interpret them, while others work in the technical aspects of forum maintenance.  So far, this has elicited no negative responses from the owner, so we continue to use our judgment until told otherwise.

Make no mistake, we'll show boobs, talk dirty, joke raunchy.  We are human.  But in the backs of our minds, we sometimes pause and decide against posting certain things.  Other people don't always do this.  It is this filter through which we view the rest of the participants.  One, two, three things we often let go.  When the line of personal conduct is clearly   violated, we warn.  When the warning is not heeded, we begin to act.  We discuss among ourselves the next course of action, and try to set the bar fairly high so the person will run out of steam naturally before they get there.  By the time a person gets there, they are a fuckin' problem.

Rob is a fuckin' problem.

Is should be understood, we as mods view the psychology of this role with some personal introspection.  We are not authoritarians.  Without using three-dollar words, we basically hate cops, enforcers, and most people who do this sort of thing to satisfy their personal powerlust.  I've never discussed this with John, but I'm sure he's questioned himself along the same lines.  The answer is civility, to the question which is harder to define - "Why impose your will upon people?"  No actual harm befalls the very few people we act upon.  They simply one day cannot enter a private property and act like assholes, lowering the standard which discourages more intelligent participants.  This could be true spammers, or trolls who have a real problem with their behavior.  They can still read  the boards, they are only prohibited from defacing them with angry messages and provocative rhetoric, which is probably better for the enjoyment by the larger community and the image of the show.  By the time this happens, they have been warned numerous times.  They decline to alter their methods, by some misguided personal definition of "free speech rights" which are contrary to private property rights, one of which actually resides here, the other of which does not.

Again...where...in over 5000 posts...do you find a substantial difference in the topics, subjects, and substenance?

If I was Howard Stern in real life(full disclosure: I am not)...would Howard Stern ever be banned and/or censored here?

Regardless of your comfort level with the topics raised...

Shouldn't they be raised nevertheless?

Like I posted regarding Mark and promoting the show...in today's global one-on-one communication...it takes Howard Stern, Hard Questions, and Shocking Topics(or at least shock over the fact of them ever being realistically discussed in the open on global media)...to get noticed above the screams and cries of the victims of the couch warriors...

Everyone here has heard of the personage of Howard Stern...amirite?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Stern

http://www.howardstern.com/

or are we to accept perpetual mediocracy instead?

everyone wishing FTL was as popular as the Howard Stern Show please raise your hands now...

oh...that many...wow!

enjoy!

And...since I brought up the issue of our most precious and valuable resource...our limited time between birth and death...

I'll also state that...while you may not have an objection to two years in prison for having the wrong orchid(see below)...

someone who is elderly...or terminally ill...or just objects to being politically imprisoned over a god-damn plant...

might see things differently...

so you should probably think long and hard before you go attempting to kidnap other human beings...

some of them might not take too kindly to it...

since you are attempting to rob them at gunpoint or threat thereof...of their most precious time!

enjoy!

----------------------------------------

(some of the included links may no longer work since this was not written this morning)

I wanted to comment briefly regarding what some might call a gift...and others might call a curse

You're perhaps familiar with the slogan "what would jesus do" or "walk a mile in the other guy's shoes" or "the grass is
always greener on the other side of the fence" or "if life is such a bowl of cherries, why did I get all the pits"

And perhaps you even understand jury-duty...fully-informed jury-duty that is...
You know...a juror who sincerely attempts to put themselves in the shoes of the other clods in the room...
As you'll read below, perhaps you'll put on the shoes of the orchid grower jailed for possessing the wrong flower...
Or perhaps you'll try on the shoes of the millions of others jackbooted for a behavior or hobby that has no victim...
Victimless crimes...no damage to person or property...and yet your daughter's favorite clove-flavored cigarette will get
her jackbooted and smashed in the face if she does not obey the dictates of the Amerikan Nazi SS Stormtroopers on patrol
against clove flavoring and those deadly orchid blossoms...

Seriously...Irwin Schiff is an old man...politically imprisoned for the rest of his life...for refusing to pay for and
forge his own shackles and chains...and for asking others to refuse to do so as well...

There are others as well...many others in fact...who are held political prisoners for other such insanities...

Perhaps you'd like to come with me on my latest journey viewing the following while wearing jesus's sandals...

Indeed...what would your messiah do?

are you refering to the necessity of double-posting in an attempt to keep stuff from ending up in the rabbit hole?

maybe you would feel differently if your threads, posts, and profile were screwed with...
