Title: Rank these for survival on a moon hike.
Post by: Pizzly on October 28, 2010, 04:02:03 PM
The scenario is your ship crashed on the surface of the moon, and must hike to the local lunar base 200 miles away. You could only salvage these items, but must rank them according to their importance. (1 for most important, 2 for secong most important, etc) Oh yeah, you crashed on the light side of the moon.

Most of this stuff would be hard to work with on the moon. How could one get food or water past the space suit without killing one's self? Maybe I'd just jump up as far as I could and simply float away to burn up on reentry when I get caught up in Earth's gravitational pull. Plus, the radiation would surely kill me by the time I could space walk 200 miles. Seems like a no win situation.

_______ Box of matches ___13____ --We're on the Moon. No firewood anyway
_______ Food concentrate ___5____ --Yeah, food's pretty important over time
_______ 50 feet of nylon rope ___6____ --Pretty rugged ground, if you need to travel, you'll likely need some cordage
_______ Parachute silk ___2____ --Light side of the Moon? You need shade
_______ Portable heating unit ___11____ --See above, nice to have in case you shelter in a shaded area, though.
_______ Two .45 caliber pistols ____10___ --If you're there, someone else may be. Not as useful for propulsion as they'd be in deep space, though.
_______ One case of dehydrated milk ____8___ --Long term, I suppose this'd be handy, so long as you brought the water
_______ Two 100 lb. tanks of oxygen ___1____ --No air, no life.
_______ Stellar map ___12____ --about as useful as a map of Manhattan here.
_______ Self-inflating life raft __9_____ --Useful as a mattress, insulation from the ground.
_______ Magnetic compass ___14____ --Not sure if this would even work, and if it does, it may be extremely misleading.
_______ 5 gallons of water ___3____ --Couple days without water, especially in a place as dry as this... not good.
_______ Signal flares ___7____ --Provided there are potential rescuers, yeah, handy. If not, then freak out the folks on earth.
_______ First aid kit, including injection needle _______ --Oops... missed this one. I'd place it between the transmitter and the rope.
_______ Solar-powered FM receiver-transmitter ___4____ --See signal flare. You could host a short-lived radio program from your home crater.

You observed the hint and totally missed what it was hinting at.

_1______ Two 100 lb. tanks of oxygen
__2_____ 5 gallons of water...  If you have some method of getting it into your suit
___3____ Food concentrate... see above
_____4__ One case of dehydrated milk... see above
___5____ Signal flares... I'm not sure if they provide their own oxygen
___6 50 feet of nylon rope...  You never know what they're gonna need rope for but they always need it.
__7_____ Parachute silk ... stops radiation?  a spacesuit IS shade and, you have to cover 200 miles, no time for dicking with a parachute.  maybe useful as a signal
____8___ Self-inflating life raft.. could tie the rope to it and haul your oxygen and stuff

_______ Stellar map... can't see stars from the light side of the moon
_____ Solar-powered FM receiver-transmitter... no line of sight
_______ Box of matches ... no oxygen, what are you going to cook?  Heat is your enemy, even if you needed it how would it get to you in a vacuum?
_______ Portable heating unit... the problem with wearing a space suit is getting RID of the heat._
_______ Two .45 caliber pistols... worthless
_______ Magnetic compass... worthless
_______ First aid kit, including injection needle... how are you going to put a bandaid on w/o taking your suit off.

You're dead from radiation even if you make it to the base.

Toss the rest out. If you could signal for help with a flare or FM radio they'd be able to notice your crash site anyhow. Besides, if you wanted to signal earth they would already be in constant contact with you. Drag the oxygen in the light atmosphere, use the water to not die, use the compass to keep in a straight line. Food isnt really necessary considering you could go at least 20 miles a day you would be hungry but the water could sustain you. If you had problems carrying that much then put it in the chute or raft I suppose.

Most of the things are completely useless. Since you would HAVE to be in a suit the food/water would be plugged into it, also the suit should keep you warm enough as it is. 200 miles is a long ass distance and you need to go lightweight if you would want to have any hope of getting there.

I suppose milk might be useful because of the loss of bone density out in space but if you're gonna be exercising that much trying to get back to the base...

Edit: Matches? No oxygen. Pistol? No oxygen.

Oh, and only 5 gallons of water to go 200 miles? You're gonna die. I think it'd be impossible to find another source of water on the moon right?

I agree.

...fucks things up for ninjas at night...

I have to disagree with you there. The moon would cast deep shadows which, in contrast with openly lighted areas, provide much better cover. Additionally, a gray outfit would likely be just as effective in the moonlight as shadow, considering even a black outfit in darkness could still stand out enough to be troublesome. I suppose overall a ninja's true weakness would be a vast open plain, moonlight or no.

I digress. I like the moon. Tides are cool.

But are ninjas not masters of disguises? They were famous for pretending to be farmers, but their farm tools (hoes, etc) were actually their deadly weapons. Light doesnt matter if you're supposed to be there :)

Self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. OR Flash Gordon had a pistol, assuming I was cool enough to be in a situation where I had my own spaceship and could crash into the moon, why wouldnt I be as cool as Flash Gordon?

Both the compass and the heating unit would probably end up being useless. With no atmosphere the heater would have to rely on radiative heating (unless the raft is air tight...) and probably wouldn't be a significant help. As for the compass; the magnetic field of the moon is weak and erratic; probably wouldn't be of much use. I say they would need the air, the water, and a means of assisting rescue (probably the transmitter and maybe star map if they are really good at using it)... maybe the raft for cover and the heater depending on the nature of the raft. They are probably dead or rescued before food is an issue...

I'm going to make a few assumptions. First, you're in a spacesuit that has enough energy for you to be able to walk 200 miles without dying. That food includes a delivery method to eat from the spacesuit, and the same goes for the oxygen, and water.

x2. there's oxygen inside the cartridges, as well as embedded in the powder itself.
As to targets, I guess it depends on what you're doing stranded on the Moon in the first place. If it was included in your kit, it must have been for
*some* reason.
As I hinted earlier, if you were in a microgravity environment, like in orbit, it could be used for propulsion. Not as effective on the Moon though. I suppose you could amuse yourself by shooting messages into the regolith, though.

3 minutes without oxygen.
3 hours without shelter.
3 days without water.
3 weeks without food.

Dont astronauts have a gun on their ship?

Can't speak for modern NASAnauts, but I'd certainly keep on on board if I were in a private spacecraft. An emergency landing could take you just about *anywhere*.
NASA emergencies don't usually end up being survivable anyway, though.

Pistol and ammunition only. Jump with your back to the base, fire pistol in front of you, be rocketed towards the base. In the low gravity it'll take you awhile to come down, and you'll be flying the whole time.

This is from NASA

Quote
Item Ranking NASA's Reasoning
Box of matches 15 Virtually worthless -- there's no oxygenon the moon to sustain combustion

Food concentrate 4 Efficient means of supplying energy requirements

50 feet of nylon rope 6 Useful in scaling cliffs and tying injured
together

Parachute silk 8 Protection from the sun's rays

Portable heating unit 13 Not needed unless on the dark side

Two .45 calibre pistols 11 Possible means of self-propulsion

One case of dehydrated milk 12 Bulkier duplication of food concentrate

Two 100 lb. tanks of oxygen 1 Most pressing survival need (weight is not a factor since gravity is one-sixth of the Earth's -- each tank would weigh only about 17 lbs. on the moon)

Stellar map 3 Primary means of navigation - star patterns appear essentially identical on the moon as on Earth

Self-inflating life raft 9 CO2 bottle in military raft may be used for propulsion

Magnetic compass 14 The magnetic field on the moon is not polarized, so it's worthless for navigation

20 litres of water 2 Needed for replacement of tremendous
liquid loss on the light side

Signal flares 10 Use as distress signal when the mother ship is sighted

First aid kit, including injection needle 7 Needles connected to vials of vitamins, medicines, etc. will fit special aperture in NASA space suit

Solar-powered FM receiver-transmitter 5 For communication with mother ship (but FM requires line-of-sight transmission
and can only be used over short ranges)

Is the moon the best place to start playing bondage games with injured people? I can see down here on Earth maybe heading into the local E.R. for this sort of fun, but the moon? Seems a little inappropriate.

There were a lot more givens that we were not told about. You said we had to hike 200 miles, not signal for help. Obviously we wouldn't realize there was a CO2 bottle in the liferaft. Why would we think that we could pierce our suit with a needle for meds, I would have assumed it would break the seal.

As they mentioned, weight isn't going to me nearly as much, about 1/6 Earth normal, but mass will remain in full effect.

In other words, if you're enjoying your ability to run along with 300 lbs of gear.... it'll still resist stopping just like 300 lbs of gear.

about 17 lbs. on the moon

I'd probably fail. 34 lbs. of weight is nothing to scoff at, plus your suit, any other gear like water (which ideally should be the heaviest thing you carry), all without a proper backpack most likely for the distance = dead.
