Preventing communism
« on: November 03, 2008, 11:47:40 PM »

Because I work as a teacher in a private school, I can have classes on subjects of my choosing. On a day we were not planning a bid day for classes, I cancelled regular classes, and decided to have an auditoruim class for the entire school.

The subject was the problems with communism.

First we had the Rosh Yeshiva (The head of the high school seminary) talk about his experiences running a Jewish camp in the Ukaraine and the wacky stories about buying tomatoes off the black market, finding stores with lines hours long, etc.

Then I spoke about the major philosophical problems with the communist manifesto, communism. I was able to destroy it because I was a philosophy major back in college.
The next speaker was the math teacher, who was an economics major. He spoke about the problems with that focus in mind.

Any wacky ideas they might have had before are gone now.

That could never happen in a public school.  The teachers' union would have you crucified!  :x

So you didn't give them the other side of the argument, and let them make their minds up for themselves?

There aren't two sides to any argument. That's a fallacy used by erstwhile leaders to convince people to follow them.

I disagree. I can find a wealth of pro-communist information. That doesn't make it right, nor does it make it wrong.

It really depends on the question you're asking.

That doesn't mean you can sufficiently narrowly define two sides to the argument over communism.

I know. I never claimed I could.

How else was I to interpret that?

Left-wing communism is a joke, but I've come across three good arguments for right-wing communism:

  • It will help us overthrow the Czar.

  • It will help us resist Hitler's / Japan's war machine.

  • It will help us resist America's / NATO's war machine.

Basically those are arguments for strong central government, not ivory-tower Marxism / Leninism.  And whatever merit those arguments had, it's clear that the Putinist system works better.

There is also an emerging argument that the Chinese Communist Party is necessary to facilitate the transition toward a pro-business dictatorship like Singapore.  Without the CCP, left-wing socialists would come to power and turn modern China into Cuba.

We mentioned the moshav, and the kibbutzes in Israel, along with their successes, but we mentioned how people in them were there willingly, and how they still lived in a nation with a framework of democracy.
