Political Persuasion

All hope is not lost when it comes to persuading family and friends to embrace liberty, though it is not usually an easy road, as I recall Mark (aka "that food product," at the time) commenting.

My Republicanesque wife's the toughest case.  I still need to figure out how to better reach her.  I say Republicanesque because she's a recently naturalized US Citizen; in a moment of frankness at election time, I advised her that her views are most consistent with Republicans, and I'm still trying to guide her beyond that.  Of course, I bitch about government all the time, so she's kinda numb to the message, and often responds disdainfully.  Fortunately, I've faired well with others.

My mother has been a liberal Democrat and my father a conservative Republican for as long as I can remember.  In the past, political discussions frequently ended with my mother's feelings hurt, or trite "you'll see, some day" type of statements from my father.  At one point after the 2000 elections I had a very frank and deliberate discussion with my mother in which I explained that she'd probably be surprised how much she thinks my views have "changed" since the Republicans are running the show (since I had a lot negative to say about the Democrats when it was their turn, and she'd expressed disappointment in how much I'd "changed.")  I explained that my views hadn't changed (much), but that libertarians agree with many criticisms Republicans have of Democrats, and I also agree with many criticisms Democrats have of Republicans.  I'd been outspoken about my distaste for Bush Sr., but she'd thought I "changed" when Clinton was in office, because I had plenty to say about him too.  I reminded her of my attitude toward Bush Sr. and told her not to be surprised if I expressed myself similarly about Bush Jr—of course, I didn't expect him to deserve as much criticism as he does.  That was an unexpected and, of course, unwanted "bonus."

Since I've leveraged techniques in Michael Cloud's The Essence of Political Persuasion, both parents seem to be slowly coming around.  Next to my wife, though, they have been the toughest to persuade (people in public have been the easiest, and friends have been saying libertarian things and sending libertarian emails to ME.)  "Political cross-dressing," in particular, has enabled me to "stretch" their appreciation of liberty significantly beyond what it was before (of course nothing helps more than the failure of a "conservative" Republican president who's acted more socialist than most Democrats.)  My most liberal friend seems to be coming around; I have to work hard not to "sell" him, but my original libertarian mentor and I conspire via email to persuade him "tag team" style—we review each other's potential comments these days because we don't want to spoil the progress we've seen.  Even my religious conservative older sister has approached ME about libertarianism these days.  I think the scary state of government of late, when discredited properly, sells liberty in a way we'd hoped it would.  These friends and relatives may not become "Libertarian" (or even "libertarian") but if they'll accept or possibly even demand solutions that are more libertarian, I'll feel I've accomplished a great deal.

I was very pleased, and somewhat proud, to receive the email I've shortened below.  Maybe my parents are starting to "get it!"

We are trying to remember if we've heard you mention this guy before. We heard his speech ending today's session in the House today, and were so impressed that I looked it up online to save and send to you!
