A phrase said only in hushed tones in the dark corners of the world...

Ok, so conspiracy folks are all up in arms about the "New World Order", and they have these videos of these important people saying the phrase "New World Order" to confirm that their conspiracy theories are correct.

Is it just me, or does the phrase "New World Order" not really sound that sinister when you hear GHWB say it.  To me, it just sounds like a synonym of "The major powers in the world are changing"  For example, there was a new world order after the Napoleonic Wars.  After Westphalia.  After the fall of the roman empire.  After WWII.  And so on.  So it sounds to me like they are saying that the power in the world is going to be redistributed/change hands like it has many many times in the past.  Nothing too shocking.

Am I missing something?

Yes. That is exactly what it means. It's a descriptive term for the post cold war state of affairs. Not the name of an organisation.

That doesn't mean there aren't any nefarious secretive organisations out to do 'x' bad thing. (Or good thing)

But all that phrase proves is the ignorance of people who make a big deal out of it.
