Honestly, I don't see this as a big deal.  Netflix has been undercharging for years.

Instead of getting mad at Netflix, IMHO you should get mad at the big movie studios for charging exorbitant rates for mediocre films, which in turn precipitated this rate increase.

Netflix screwed themselves.  If you like streaming, check out Amazon Prime.  It's cheaper than the Netflix plan and also gives you free 2-day shipping on all your Amazon orders.

Might try that since I wanted to watch Deepspace 9 again, but they're not releasing it to Netflix streaming until October (seriously...WTF?).

Did Netflix get hit by hackers? My streaming is down and has been for two days.

Used to be such a pain in my assholes to order those certificates all the time, and enter the codes before I lost them.

Wow, multiple assholes?  You could have some really fun gang-bangs.

Meh, someone needs to show me how Prime is better. Any decent title requires extra payment and they don't have much(read: anything good) in the part I was able to peruse.

I can echo that sentiment somewhat.  So far I haven't been thrilled with the browsing interface.  I'm not likely to pay per title for something streamed and the interface isn't great for browsing just the included titles.  I can't even say if the content isn't that great because I haven't had much luck browsing the content with that clunky interface.

I am loving the free shipping though.  I think it's worth it for that alone.  The free streaming is icing.

That's my opinion.  Prime gives you free 2-day shipping in addition to the streaming.  I have a DVR and a couple premium cable channels already, Netflix streaming has never impressed me much anyway.

Prime also give you the option to pay 2.99 for next day shipping on many items Amazon sells.

Its great to order a much needed item in the P.M and have it delivered by the next days end.

Netflix was getting its ass handed to it, because it accounts for a noteworthy portion of all net traffic in North America.  So each and every web provider is ramping up its traffic costs.

So, they split off their DVD from streaming services in an attempt to show more accurate numbers in profit-loss.  Apparently, it was becoming more difficult for them to project these figures into the future, as postage and web traffic are experiencing a divergence in cost.

The costs of content were within expected models, and they expect that to rise as they accumulate subscribers.  I've heard content providers are really pushing hard for the prices of premium content, which explains why some titles are unavailable upon release.  I guess their philosophy is "If your movie is too expensive, thirty million people can look elsewhere for it".  Meanwhile, the studios are saying "If they have to look elsewhere, maybe they'll stay elsewhere."  Suggesting a potential exodus.  On the whole, competition is good.

Eventually, this'll lead to movies featuring the NetFlix, FB or G+ or Amazon logo on their advertising campaigns, and you'll probably just PPV without subscribing.  And I doubt any of 'em will take fuckin' Bitcoins.

Good observations, Drifter, but I don't think it will lead to a pay-per-view style service. The whole point of Netflix is the subscription model. I don't think we'll see an entire industry revert largely back to the older model that Netflix obliterated.

I can personaly attest to the effect Netflix has had on the broadband infrastructure. I'd say about 30% of the tower rollouts I get for work are for bottlenecks at wireless AP's. Nothing I can do about it except pass the info on the the next level. Updates are being made, but those are costly and wont solve the problem in the long term. Just a band-aid at best.

Seems to me, the answer should be some new form of video file that can be compressed at the source and later decompressed at the destination, to a greater degree than say, an avi file. Something new.

But what bugs me is this. I can watch Iron Man 2 on the stream, but if I want to watch the first one I have to put it on my DVD queue... W T F
