Okay, so I thought I would make this post so that all of us working towards compassionate use laws can jot down pointers, tips, and problems. Hopefullly, we can make this work by sharing our experiences.
What I have done so far, is contact NORML, MPP, SAFER, LEAP, and several other common sense groups based in my state of Delaware. It has gone fairly well, and I have found the MPP to be the most helpful. The other organizations have been very helpful (although I havent heard back from SAFER yet). I have contacted some universities, but haven't heard back. I admit, that I haven't been very proactive with the universties and colleges. This weekend I will go to some nearby universities, and post some flyers.
I made a yahoo account just for contact info. Myspace.com has been pretty helpful in obtaining a small amount of contacts. All of the Delaware based myspace.com groups now have a post from me. My postings on craigslist.com has shown little benefit. I am still working on a website to help promote the initiative. I also need to get a petition going, maybe online, but I don't really know. The petition would be set in place just to let the legislatures know that they don't have to worry about loosing votes (Jack Coles idea).
Today I contacted some healthcare communties that deal with such things as MS, AIDS, and cancer. I just now remebered that I have to contact an organization based in Delaware that deals with glaucoma. Contacting the medical community is vital to ensure success, in the medical marijuana initiative (how can you aruge for doctors and patients, if you don't have any on your side). Sometime during this week, I will start phoning churches. I may need some advice in this department, but I figure they should at least see the compassionate side to the argument.
At some point when our coalition is strong enough ( I have one doctor on board and am pretty excited about that) we will start a media blitz. We will send letters to the editors, I will work with my employer to put together a news package, and we will not let up until we get people really discussing the matter. Then I will find a legislator to support the initiative, set a date to bring it up (I'm really ignorant about this process and will rely on the expertise of other LP members), and put together a demonstation outside the state house in Dover on the day we push the initiative. Hopefully, it will be enough pressure, and we'll have enough testimony to pass the law.
Anybody else having any different experiences, or are you taking a different path? What is working for you? What isn't?
