You can apparently just call people up and convince them to destroy their surroundings by asserting the slightest authority.

Sad commentary on the state of critical thinking in our society. Of course, anyone who asks "why" before following instructions is taught that they are mentally unstable.

I'm not sure what is more perturbing, the fact a grown adult would agree to such things over the phone on a highly spurious pretext, or that the search-ee would actually agree to it and not walk the fuck out.
