"when you have the POLICE looting that is a problem."
Ya think???

Oh come on man, im sure she left her cash at the counter with an itemized list of everythig she and her friend took, or at least a note taped to the register with her credit card number on it. Carts full of Xbox games and high heel pumps "yah, we jus' takin' what we needs"

Have you no faith in New Orleans finest??

Morals are a funny thing in a disaster situation.

Walmart wasn't defending its property. Lots of people had no other way to eat or provide for their children but by stealing during that time. The stores contents would have been declared a loss anyway because of the hurricane.

...and the high-top basketball shoes are *especially* nutritious and delicious.
...and of course you need a big screen TV to receive emergency information.

I did it because I have friends there, and after seeing Japanese kids crying on TV how can you not?

Its funny how I find myself wanting to help people who can take care of themselves, more than I want to help people that cant in a disaster situation.

You both have been fooled into a false sense of security. The Japanese will be the death of us all. These people, yes collectivist but in this case acceptable, are not able to care for themselves as we know it. Believe me; Japanese people cannot even walk in a crowded area without bumping into people around them. They are completely useless. They like to believe they are a proud people and “saving face” and all that, mean while they are the number one people going to Tailand for underage sex. I am not talking about  12-16 year olds. I am talking 5 or 6 year olds. Saving face my ass. That is just something they tell themselves to justify their misplaced elitism.

What percentage of Japanese people do you think are str8-up pedos, roughly?  Enough to judge the Japanese people collectively?  Srsly?

Wow, you sound like you're str8 out of Stromfront.  Those people are... challenged.

I think what you are getting at is after the food and water have been "looted" (not technically illegal to take those) and all that is left is electronics, those might be taken and resold for food and water.

There was no food or water to be bought. That was the problem. Didn't matter how much money you had. No, these were just opportunists taking someone elses shit. Water and food, I can understand.

All in all though, I lay the blame on the government for that entire cluster-fuck, seeing that they wouldn't even allow Walmart to bring in trucks of bottled water because the people at FEMA wanted to seem like they were the ones in control and none of these "amateurs"" were gonna "get in their way" of saving the city.

This talk of the lack of looting in Japan as compared to New Orleans reminds me of a story Michele once told on FTL about this time when she was in Tennessee helping out during the flood a year or two back, (a flood which was like, the worst in the state's history or something but something else was going on in the news at the time and drowned out the story,) and the local news caught her and her boys on camera and declared them to be looters.

I think I've heard of the same thing regarding Katrina -- that a lot of the so-called looting was actually people helping each other out.

A lot of stereotyping probably comes into play. Few think of the Japanese as selfish looters, but a lot more (at least in America) probably think of black people that way.

If it weren't for endless examples of black folks rioting and looting in other everyday situations, ball games, smashing Korean storefronts in LA, flash mobs targeting convenience stores, etc... then you may have had a point.

During disasters, no one questions, or should anyway, people taking food & water. Truckloads of it even.

People in America do think that about Black folks, and with reason.

Don't forget the white boys who looted golf clubs during Katrina too.

The story of a school teacher and his wife who looted stores because they ran out of food. They complain that people were stealing plants, when they themselves were taking magazines.

Quote
The pair saw one man scrounging among shelves of pharmaceuticals, apparently for drugs. But the teachers were more interested in getting their hands on O'Shea's favorite tabloid fare.

"So we took her Star magazine and we got out," Wood said.
