I do feel bad for the people their but I still believe the USA needs to pull all it's military bases out of Japan.  We have been subsidizing them for decades.  And while it isn't much in the way of foreign aid every bit less we spend on other countries is less added to our national debt.

Also, did you ever hear of any Japanese donating any money to American disaster relief efforts?  Or their government giving any aid to America?  Really have they given anything back?

Wonder if any Japanese will be claiming I am a bigot for not wanting American people to continue being fleeced?

If anyone wants to donate voluntarily their own funds to the efforts to help the people of Japan by all means go ahead.  I fully support voluntary efforts just not having government agents with guns forcing people to help out.

We need to empower private interests to be capable of defending their Life, Liberty, and Property - and by extension everyone else's.  Governments are so ineffective at defending Natural Rights they are no better than the worst of criminals, but are a lot more powerful and dangerous.

I did it to make myself feel good, nothing else.

Maybe they can buy a hammer with it.

My identical twin Gilbert Gottfried got fired as from the Aflac Duck role for joking about the tsunami.  Since we sound exactly alike, I'm now thinking of hiring him to call in to radio shows on my behalf.

If any country could handle quake damage to a nuke plant it would be Japan.  Mostly because Japan is plagued with quakes and builders always make that a consideration in their constructions.
If a quake like that hit New York most of the buildings would be flattened and the death totals would be considerably higher.

Hmmm, I just assumed their nuke plants were made out of balsa wood and paper. Like their homes. Isn't every building in Japan made from balsa wood and paper?

On the plus side, if those nuke plants go and it hits the jet stream I am right yet again. I said years ago that the Japanese would be the death of us all. Some times it sucks being right all the time.

So far this disaster does not have Hollywood sponsorship, just some tweets by 2nd rate celebrities. That's gonna dig into someone's profits.

I haven't seen any video of people carrying beer & TVs away, and I haven't heard any reports of rapes going on in the aftermath.

I also don't think I'll be seeing any photos of dead bodies being flung into one giant pile.

Know what I would do if I lived on the West Coast? I would stuff my pockets with Graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows. Then, when they found my body they would be like "Oh my god, this is so terr.......................OH LOOK, SMORES!!!"

I agree with this.

Cept for maybe the body piles. They might have no choice if the numbers are too great.

Japan has much tighter controls on their media.  Culturally the entire country will be concerned about saving face.  They will not air their dirty laundry.

I did it because I have friends there, and after seeing Japanese kids crying on TV how can you not?

That sounds more like China.

There will be no way to avoid any "dirty laundry" escaping the scene considering the survivors & global news media having access to the area and unrestricted access to the net. You're aware that there is video of their nuclear reactors exploding, right? Doesn't get much dirtier than that, and the vid is out there whether the gov. wants to restrict it or not.

Plus, disaster & suffering sells. People can't get enough.. that's the very reason photographers will stand by and take pics while dead babies are being tossed through the air. Supply & demand.

Are some people there looting? Undoubtedly.. but I don't think it'll be anything on the same scale as New Orleans after Katrina or the (ongoing) mess that is Haiti.

It's the Japanese culture. Stand by and watch how they handle the disaster and compare it to how past events were handled by lesser cultures.

I'm sending money to this relief effort.

Its funny how I find myself wanting to help people who can take care of themselves, more than I want to help people that cant in a disaster situation. After seeing those people during Katrina, the cops, the military, the regular folk all acting like animals, I had no desire to help them.  Sucks for the ones that did actually act with a little self pride, but my mind was already made. Screw em.

Maybe I'm God or something and I help those who help themselves. 8)

This talk of the lack of looting in Japan as compared to New Orleans reminds me of a story Michele once told on FTL about this time when she was in Tennessee helping out during the flood a year or two back, (a flood which was like, the worst in the state's history or something but something else was going on in the news at the time and drowned out the story,) and the local news caught her and her boys on camera and declared them to be looters.

I think I've heard of the same thing regarding Katrina -- that a lot of the so-called looting was actually people helping each other out.

A lot of stereotyping probably comes into play. Few think of the Japanese as selfish looters, but a lot more (at least in America) probably think of black people that way.

Helping each other out like this?
