I watched Pan's Labarynth again tonight. Slight libertarian note: When the Fascist captain is challenging the doctor, "why didn't you just obey me," the doctor replies, "Obey? Just for the sake of it? That is something only people like you can do."

It's a great flick, either way.

I caught THX 1138 the other night - it was an early flick from George Lucas.

It's a wonderful parody featuring a super-sized, fascist nanny state. Totalitarianism with manners. Great movie - the effects are MILES ahead of its time.

Guillermo Del Toro is so cool. He directed Pans Labyrinth (El Labyrintho Del Fauno) and the Hellboy movies, and soon he will do a new The Hobbit movie (2010 I think).

The old version (animated) of The Hobbit was something I watched over and over as a child and still enjoy to this day.

Does anyone know if Bob Marley was libertarian-ish? He sings allot about Freedom and appears to have a positive freedom message but you never know, some people think freedom means free stuff. Jimmy Cliff is another reggae singer with a freedom message, I love his song "The Harder They Come" when I'm in a we're going to get freedom mood.  Ziggy Marley sings about freedom too but then he played a show at the white house for obama so he is obviously not pro freedom. I have considered sending him a copy of Healing Our World to help clear up some confusion that he is having.  Reggae music just seems profreedom, does anyone anything about the history of reggae and the message that it is trying to convey(origanally)?

The Harder They Come

Well they tell me of a pie up in the sky
Waiting for me when I die
But between the day you're born and when you die
They never seem to hear even your cry

CHORUS:
So as sure as the sun will shine
I'm gonna get my share now of what's mine
And then the harder they come the harder they'll fall, one and all
Ooh the harder they come the harder they'll fall, one and all

Well the officers are trying to keep me down
Trying to drive me underground
And they think that they have got the battle won
I say forgive them Lord, they know not what they've done

CHORUS

ooh yeah oh yeah woh yeah ooooh

And I keep on fighting for the things I want
Though I know that when you're dead you can't
But I'd rather be a free man in my grave
Than living as a puppet or a slave

CHORUS

Yeah, the harder they come, the harder they'll fall one and all
What I say now, what I say now, awww
What I say now, what I say one time
The harder they come the harder they'll fall one and all
Ooh the harder they come the harder they'll fall one and all

I know Bob was Rastafarian.

From my experience of other Rastafarians I have met, I'd say they are very much community based people. They help each other out and look out for one another.

I'm not sure of the politics, but wikipedia had this to say:

'Rastafari culture does not encourage mainstream political involvement. In fact, in the early stages of the movement most Rastas did not vote, out of principle. Ras Sam Brown formed the Suffering People's Party for the Jamaican elections of 1962 and received fewer than 100 votes. In the election campaign of 1972, People's National Party leader Michael Manley used a prop, a walking stick given to him by Haile Selassie, which was called the "Rod of Correction", in a direct appeal to Rastafari values.

In the famous free One Love Peace Concert on April 22, 1978, Peter Tosh lambasted the audience, including attending dignitaries, with political demands that included decriminalising cannabis. He did this while smoking a spliff, a criminal act in Jamaica. At this same concert, Bob Marley led both then-Prime Minister Michael Manley and opposition leader Edward Seaga onto the stage; and a famous picture was taken with all three of them holding their hands together above their heads in a symbolic gesture of peace during what had been a very violent election campaign.'

I would like to just quickly point out that NOFX, Anti-Flag, and others of their ilk are not libertarians, and when they sing of freedom, they generally mean the distorted fail of big time socialism.

When they say your country has failed you, they usually mean Republicans (even though they have), so don't be fooled into thinking they are freedom loving at all.  I enjoy their music, but I take it all with a grain of salt.

I know little about them, but the name 'ANTI-FLAG' would suggest some version of 'anarchist'...

They are left-anarchists but they're fun to listen to.

My Commie-Marxist Australian friend really loves Anti-Flag.  Its very a very anti-american band. Not just government (from what I've gathered/heard).

Not necessarily, NOFX has some good lyrics.

Anti-drug war.
Herojuana
Light the match, burn the flower
Leave behind, all the wrong
Why be sad?
When happiness can be bought for a little more then free
Modern day prohibition

Are we men? Are we children?
At what age, can I choose how to live?

The only real drug problem is scoring real good drugs
Haven't we learned our lesson?
The corner store sells finer scotch
But who's got uncut powder?
We just want what is ours (dignity)
If God created plants and buds that I find and abuse
Then who the fuck are you to judge me?

Sure it is a bit tongue and cheek but it has some good lines in it.  There are some gems in other songs, but I am sure you are right about them not criticizing the "good party".

Rush is definitely the most libertarian out of most listed.

Songs to check out:

Tom Sawyer

Quote
No, his mind is not for rent
To any God or government.
Always hopeful, yet discontent,
He knows changes arent permanent,
But change is.

Freewill

Quote
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill.

The Trees

Quote
There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.

The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.

There was trouble in the forest,
And the creatures all have fled,
As the maples scream "Oppression!"
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.

And there are many more examples I probably am not listing.

Coolish, but too industrial for me.

I love the punk rock, especially the Oi and the street punk, this stuff is kinda cool just too industrial for me.
