Interestingly enough, libertarians have oft claimed Orwell as their own, as well. However, I was introduced to ANIMAL FARM as a communist work when we read it in school.

I think it is laughable that a communist would enjoy Animal Farm as a positive reflection of communism. I suppose they would just think it was a bd implementation of a good idea.

To be honest, I can't remember enough about ANIMAL FARM to make a call on what politics are on patrol - however, 1984 could hardly be a shrine to communism, that's for sure.
It pretty much exemplifies many of the major faults in communism.  I've always seen it as an obvious attack on it.

Not just you: The CIA commissioned the original animated film version of it precisely as an anti-communist movie.

hi

I'm looking for some libertarian music, movies etc.

Are there libertarian bands or artists? I mean freedom is not only a political thing its a way of life and thought. There's a lot of left-wing music and art and I can't really imagine that there is so little pro-freedom art. I think its a great way to promote liberty because its easier to reach those who are not that interested in politics etc.

Any style of music etc. is highly appreciated. Do you have any tips for me?

So far I found:

Good libertarian movies might be Ghostbusters, Evolution, Red Dawn, Enemy of the State, Brazil, and the Aussie film, The Castle

Music, I don't know. Rush are supposedly libertarians. For a lefty anarchist side, I would recommend especially Propaghandi, a melodic hardcore punk band

Yes, listen to Rush. They are a fantastic progressive rock band that has very principled libertarian ideals. I own every single one of their albums and they are just fantastic. Another cool libertarian-esque band is Queensryche. I highly recommend Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime, masterpiece. Gamma Ray also is a band with a pretty nice libertarian tinge to it. Frank Zappa was a libertarian (when he was alive that is) and almost ran on the Libertarian Party's ticket. He was principled until the day he died and was a fantastic composer/rock legend. Primus tends to have a left-libertarian philosophy about them and Helloween has some songs about freedom etc. Public Enemy is a nice rock/rap classic group that has a very anti-government message, I love them. So I would say, for music, look at these:

Rush
Queensryche (mainly Operation:Mindcrime)
Frank Zappa
Gamma Ray
Public Enemy
Primus
Helloween

Ah, I fogot Helloween and Gamma Ray - Kai Hansen has a definite libertarian streak to him: See songs like "Guardians" on the The Walls of Jericho, and the similar Gamma Ray song "Guardians of mankind" for a sarcastic look at those controling our lives for our "own good and protection."

Today I saw Space Chimps. It took some good shots at government. My favorite line was something like (said by a fed agent to a man having his property confiscated) "Thank you for cooperating with your government, under threat of force". There was also one alien who gets a little power and instantly sets himself up as ruler of the planet (this isn't a spoiler, it is the basis for about half of the plot). When the basis for his power is questioned, he responds pretty harshly.

Also this weekend I saw The Golden Compass which comes off as STRONGLY libertarian, with a world world led by a sort of Theocracy.

The books were meant to be an atheist equivalent of the Chronicles of Narnia. For other atheist fantasy sagas, check out the Eragon series.

I know this is going to a smaller group inside a small group, but if you listen to hardcore (punk, not metal) , you might like T.S.O.L. (True Sound of Liberty)

Black Flag - "Police Story"

Great example as well.

Really?  I've never seen either live unfortunately, but I love both of their recordings.

Yes, if you read The Golden Compass and The Chronicles of Narnia from religious standpoints then they have great messages. And they both get really super religious/spiritual in the last book too.  I'd have to say those the TCoN gets a little fuzzy in its explanation of the end, a problem that The Golden Compass never has.

Good call! And a great movie, too.

WATCHMEN, to a certain extent, could be seen as Libertarian-esque...

Have we mentioned JERICHO yet?

Hell, STAR WARS does a fine job of throwing a pissy light on Big Government.

I watched Pan's Labarynth again tonight. Slight libertarian note: When the Fascist captain is challenging the doctor, "why didn't you just obey me," the doctor replies, "Obey? Just for the sake of it? That is something only people like you can do."

Possible Randian tilt, the little girl Ofelia's fight to against the idea that the universe is inherently horrible.

Gogol Bordello has some pretty libertarian messages.

Your Country

Your country raised you
your country fed you
And just like any other country
It will break you
On front line send you
Tax the hell out of you
And just like any other country
It will lock you up you!

But unfortunately there'll be no judgement day
It would be kind of fun to see
What they would have to say
When the god they preached
Would actually be there
And all who didn't like The Stooges
Would go to fucking hell!

What are all these countries
How did they appear?
Who cut up the cake?
Who brought up all this gear?
Did it have to do anything
With its people's will?
I don't know, I don't know
I don't know my dear...

But even all the garbage
they pour over our eyes
Does not prevent us from living
Most magical of lifes

Now it's six in the morning
I'm down in New Orleans
Sister paintings on the wall
They will speak to me
And up later on we resume salutations
to the rest of local Tribal Connections

This is a song on whose lyrics I've been working for a while. I've had the music in my head for the entire time; unfortunately I can't present it to you yet as it is still there. I can't really describe it except to tell you to imagine a cross between Rhapsody of Fire and Pink Floyd. Maybe progressive metal would describe it, but not with perfect accuracy.

Anyway, here are the lyrics. I would like your opinions and comments. Read it as poetry if you wish since there is no music available yet.

First, though, a few disclaimers: the line in the prelude will be spoken. It is a quote from C.S. Lewis's That Hideous Strength. The line "This is how their world ends" is a blatant rip-off of the poem Hollow Men by T.S. Elliot. I'm not sorry. Also, there are a couple of references to Christian ideas in the lyrics. I'm not sorry for that either.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Hail to the King

PRELUDE

Their own strength has betrayed them.
They have gone to the gods
Who would not have come to them
And pulled down Deep Heaven on their heads.

VERSE 1

Hail to the king
His alone the hand that guides
Just like a symphony
At any cost
The perfection of our lives
And death to liberty

See what your power has wrought
A world made destitute
The kings will always be
Masters of their own world
But never of reality

They are decieved by their own lies
The blood they've spilled has blinded their eyes
So confident in their domain
They won't see the end 'till it comes

CHORUS 1

And soon will fall upon the ground
The edifice come crashing down
The chains they forged will bind their legs
For they are beaten in the end
They have pulled deep Heaven on their heads

This is how their world ends
This is how their world ends

VERSE 2

Hail to the king
Marching in his finery
A naked emperor
He does not see
What the innocents declare
The power of the powerless is truth

And truth is what the kings despise
As servants of the father of lies
So arrogant in self-deceit
They won't see the end 'till it comes

CHORUS 2

And soon will fall upon the ground
The great Colossus crashing down
The chains they forged will bind their legs
For they are beaten in the end
They have pulled deep Heaven on their heads

This is how their world ends
This is how their world ends

BRIDGE

And when the truth at last is known
The powerless will find empty thrones
And shatter them upon the ground
Never to be ruled again

CHORUS 3

As kingdom fades from memory
A final end to all slavery
The chains they forged will bind their legs
For they are beaten in the end
They have pulled deep heaven on their heads

I fail to see how that is a relevant criticism of my lyrics
