Libertarian music, movies etc.
« on: April 15, 2008, 10:04:54 AM »

hi

I'm looking for some libertarian music, movies etc.

Are there libertarian bands or artists? I mean freedom is not only a political thing its a way of life and thought. There's a lot of left-wing music and art and I can't really imagine that there is so little pro-freedom art. I think its a great way to promote liberty because its easier to reach those who are not that interested in politics etc.

Any style of music etc. is highly appreciated. Do you have any tips for me?

So far I found:

Check out my zine myspace.com/music_76 it is libertarian and conservative music oriented. Once I get out of school in four weeks I will start working on it more including updating the bands list (taking one or two bands off and adding a bunch more including some of the ones you just posted and helped me find out about!).

Here is the bands list (We also have other zines, sites, labels, etc that deal with this stuff listed). To make the list you have to be a band or solo artist who espouses libertarian and/or conservative views in your music on a fairly regular basis.:

Great to see more people building the scene.

Wow thanks a lot for putting up the great bandlist and feeding the blog. Thats what I've been looking for.

Calling for a Revolution/The Time is Now - yeah(Pokerface)

edit:Maybe it would be a good idea to start a Wikipedia article on that issue?

I don't like being preached to when I want to be entertained even if I agree with the message.  Moistboyz do a pretty good job at balancing the two though.

I don't like to be preached either but liberty can be fun.

Aimee Allen's Ron Paul song is also pretty cool.

Welcome to the forum, Isildur.  Is your sig a general reference, or is it specific to Ken Royce and FSW?

Television - Firefly, Jericho, Supernatural
Movies - V for Vendetta, Serenity, The Patriot
Music - Rush, Nine Inch Nails, Iron Maiden, Megadeth

That's all I've got.

Yes, listen to Rush. They are a fantastic progressive rock band that has very principled libertarian ideals. I own every single one of their albums and they are just fantastic. Another cool libertarian-esque band is Queensryche. I highly recommend Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime, masterpiece. Gamma Ray also is a band with a pretty nice libertarian tinge to it. Frank Zappa was a libertarian (when he was alive that is) and almost ran on the Libertarian Party's ticket. He was principled until the day he died and was a fantastic composer/rock legend. Primus tends to have a left-libertarian philosophy about them and Helloween has some songs about freedom etc. Public Enemy is a nice rock/rap classic group that has a very anti-government message, I love them. So I would say, for music, look at these:

Rush
Queensryche (mainly Operation:Mindcrime)
Frank Zappa
Gamma Ray
Public Enemy
Primus
Helloween

All good stuff. Year Zero from Nine Inch Nails is probably the most libertarian album I've ever heard. You should check it out, Rothbardian, if you haven't already.

seems like most "libertarian" movies are just showing the horrors of extreme authoritarianism and sadly does not really instill the libertarian spirit. The average centrist will think "thank god our government isn't like that" and not "holy shit that wasn't that different from what is going on now I need to do something about it"  I think it would be fucking kick ass if someone made a mockumentary of future world in which liberty wins and people could be shown how the market could respond to meet their transportation, safety, education, etc. needs
