Watched Spartacus, and Paths of Glory last night.
Spartacus was too long, sappy, and too Hollywood. It had the major players, but still lacked historical authenticity. I think Kubrick was trying to make an epic "sword and sandals" film, but this wasn't it. He usually picks music well for his films, but didn't here. It came up short in a lot of ways, and its funny to note the film becomes worse AFTER the slave revolt begins.
Paths of Glory was a brilliant film about war. I think Kubrick captured the injustices, and inhumanity, the cowardice, and villainy very well.
