We're snowed in, and that means there's a lot of time for movie watching. My roommate showed me "A Serious Man" tonight, and I didn't like it. There was a lot of lead up to nothing, and a plot without a protagonist. The roommate said it was nihilist, and I am inclined to agree because of a reoccurring theme of "the meaning is what you make of it".

You Don't Know Jack - Outstanding "docu-drama" about Jack Kevorkian, AKA Doctor Death.

Repo Men - Very confused obviously leftist-written script of a dystopian future in which people are sold artificial organs at usury credit rates, and when they default on the payments, the "artiforgs" are "repossessed" without regard to the patient's health outcome (which is to assume they die as ugly as possible.)  The bullshit factor is high, and there are strong socialist assertions, nevertheless, there was food for thought.  It was very gory.

Just saw Reefer Madness, and I was not impressed. The film was supposed to be campy, and it was, but not to the point where it was funny. I watched it sober, and didn't think it was as good/bad as people make it out to be.

Are you referring to this?  Sadly, it was supposed to be serious.

Someone was talking about this one earlier, saw it, it was brutal - brutal as in good, lots of gritty reality, rough life back then, coming soon to North Americans.

I think he's referring to this remake which is a musical and definitely campy.

Oh, my.  7.1 stars out of 10...I can see room for error here...my intuition tells me not to watch it, yet better rated than a lot of things I've really liked.

Sounds like you may be right, thanks.

New sub-topic: Stripped Rental DVDs

Ran across my first stripped DVD at Redbox last night (Repo Men.)  It really pissed me off, because the story was obviously influenced by some leftist ideology, and I wanted to watch the "feature commentary" by the director and the writers.

This, of course, encourages people to download torrents instead of renting.

Well, torrents don't usually come with extras. It just encourages people to buy DVD's after they've rented them.

I was referring to the original, which was not worth my time. I don't understand how it became a cult classic.
