Even at 5 he's able to wash his own celery, apples, etc. - or he can pick something from some options you give him and make it himself. No extra cookin' for you, no forcing meat-that-looks-like-meat on him!

My son was picky sometimes, still is a bit. Lately though he's been chomping down all sorts of stuff.. sashimi especially, but his latest taste is for bratwurst.

But now I'm on a mission to mend. Everything that broke and make it glisten again. Strip down, redesign, construct, and improve. While the rest procrastinate I'll be making my move.

My daughter is going thru similar issues. We already have several meatless days each week, but she's pushing for no meat. Or chicken. Or eggs, because they could have become chickens.

In her brain, it means she should get cheesy pasta or grilled cheese sandwiches every night. That's not okay with me.

I told her we can cut meat out entirely when she starts eating various legume dishes, and broadens her spectrum of vegetables beyond the standards. Sure, I'm fortunate there's never a fight about eating broccoli, cauliflower or asparagus - but she won't eat eggplant, squash, spinach, etc., or any fruit that's not an apple, grape or banana.

She's trying more of the "grown up" vegetarian dishes now, and there's less fighting at the table about eating cute & fuzzy creatures.

I remember staying up until midnight, sitting in front of some dish I'd refused to eat. That was my parent's method. Sit there until you eat it, punctuated by a spanking every hour or so. Happened maybe once a week from age 5 to 8 or 9.

Didn't work. Usually what would happen is they'd finally get me to choke some of it down, and I was by that point so worked up, I'd start retching or actually vomiting, germinating a tantrum spiral for all involved.

Ah, abusive parents.

P.S. - I'm sure you don't need to be told, but, uh, don't do that.

I would head the advice of Blackie, Shaw, Laetitia, and Hellbilly; mostly Blackie.

I'm with Mark.  I guess all you can do is put it in front of him, but make sure there are sides with lots of good grains, beans, legumes, and fresh fruits and good veggies.  He'll likely be over it soon, since he hasn't sworn off all meat entirely.  Seeing as how you live on a farm (I think you've mentioned before), I can see how he might get kind of grossed out.

The casserole suggestion was a good one too, I think.  If you cut chunks small enough I think kids will eat almost anything.

Get the government to pass a law demanding all children eat what their parents give them.

but not until they work out the requirements the parents need to meet in order to qualify for feeding their children. Can't be feeding them without matching it up to the pyramid. You know, like they do in school cafeterias.

I remember that!

Nothing like municipal food choices.

The state gave my school free hamburgers (soy, also subsidized) and milk was very heavily pushed (subsidized) so we had hamburgers with fries and (canned) mandarin oranges a lot.
