I read Atlas Shrugged while still a conservative Christian. It was one of the most influential pieces of literature I've ever read. Yes, it was wordy. No, I still have the last 30 pages of John Galt's speech bookmarked to read later (It's been 3 years). While there are a lot of sexual kinks in the book, those can be overlooked for myriads of spot-on commentary covering the evil of money, obligation to family, socialism, labor unions, monetary policy, corporatism, regulation, and crony government. She takes the time to thoroughly counter every point made by socialists, collectivist, and altruists. Since finishing AS, I have gone on to read all of her other fiction and much of the nonfiction. Fountainhead is better than AS, Anthem and We the Living are both riveting and fast paced (should be read instead of 1984 in school), and her nonfiction is spot-on, especially the essays "Age of Envy" and "Comprachicos".
