Ideas for civil disobedience
« on: January 12, 2010, 09:46:37 PM »

I'd like to get a list of ideas for civil disobedience going here. What things have you done or known friends to do or been impressed with? I really like the idea of opening up a homeless shelter without permits. It really strikes at the heart of how evil the state is.

Make it known among your friends that you will not continue to contact anyone who works for the government. If enough people do this, the threat of social isolation will keep people from getting government jobs.

One thing I plan to do when I start my business is exclude anyone from being hired if they ever worked for the government.

Not very flashy, but I think it'll work.

Dude, I thought you were a spambot for like a week. You posted like a spambot. You failed the Turing test.

I dont know about that not hiring thing. You are punishing them for finally doing the right thing?

I'd rather just keep my business apart from the gov or anyone that works for them. I dont know about separating myself from people who work for the gov either, since my parent (asshole authoritarian who claims to be a Libertarian) works for the state, and I have a friend who enlisted in the military. The friend may be saveable, since he knew little about politics or the world around him before joining.

I have two ideas, I don't know if the second necessarily is CD but it'd be an interesting social experiment.

1. This summer I'm going to a double header at Fenway Park and my girlfriend and I will not be standing or removing our caps for the singing of the national anthem.

2. I found out about a site http://chatroulette.com/ where you can cycle through various people's webcams. My friend put a stuffed monkey in his chair with a jar of vaseline and a wadded up tissue and watched people's reactions. I'm going to setup something anti state (I haven't figured out what yet) and gauge everyone's reactions.

Like I said, not really CD but it'd be fun to watch people get pissed.

The Moral Underground: How Ordinary Americans Subvert an Unfair Economy

In this fascinating exploration of economic civil disobedience, Dodson (Don't Call Us Out by Name) introduces readers to teachers, supervisors, health-care professionals and managers who bend the rules—and even break the law—to support those in need. Dodson shares stories of individuals like Linda, a health-care supervisor who has, against hospital policy, driven an employee to court on work time and allows her low-wage employees to manipulate the schedule so they can attend to child-care needs. The author interviews Cora, a restaurant manager, who came up with a double talk system, in which she keeps two sets of time sheets so that workers can attend to family issues and who says, helping women meet their kids or do what they have to do is more important than her chain restaurant's rules. Dodson's study is gripping and her argument is persuasive: we should not have to put compassionate Americans in a position where they have to choose between following rules and helping those who are trying to help themselves.
