Update: I'm going to my first, and my wife's second, ultra sound this Monday! She is three months along.

My wife and I both do not want to baptize the new baby, but does anyone know what you would call a "Godparent" type who would have responsibilities like a god parent but without all the religious crap associated with it.

I took a line from Chris Rock's insurance routine and thought of calling them "In Case Shit Parents". You know like in case shit happens to us. My wife gave me THE look. :)

Eh, just call them godparents, doesn't have to be a religious connotation involved unless you make it that way.

Yeah I see your point. But, I'm really tired of people in my family going through the motions pretending like they are Catholic. So I want to set a example by showing their is an alternative to the whole baptism thing. In my mind, it is different than being a godparent.

I gotcha, but you still don't have to baptise them and you can still just call them godparents because that's just the easiest way to do it.

Only alternatives I've heard are "non-blood Aunt and Uncle".  I've got a couple of those, but I'm Jewish and us yids don't tend to call anyone godparents.  I can't think of another word that really describes that relationship either.  "Potential Guardian"?  That' just sounds horrible.

Why do you want to burden someone with stupid responsibilities?

Being chosen as a Godparent is a welcomed event by most folks, no burden involved. Don't reckon too many parents would select someone who doesn't want to do it.

"Potential Guardian"?  That' just sounds horrible.

You could shorten it to "PoG" and it would be even more awesome.

I would just stick to original names just to keep it simple for the child. Madrina y padrino.  :P

I'd say to go ahead with the typical godparent designation, just to eliminate confusion.

Godparent doesn't really have the religious connotation these days.
After all, when somebody says "Godfather", how many people really think about "God"?

I bet most are thinking of Marlon Brando.

My godparent gave me two religious books. One was mildly entertaining and I still have it. The other ended up as target practice for my knives. *shrug*  It was a very big book on translating the bible and quite useless to me.

Oh boy, you're gonna love that kid, especially with the smart mouth that girls even at eight seem to acquire (my niece was that way, but grew out of it, luckily). >_>

I'm looking forward to the booster seat stage more than the newborn stage. At booster age they do a lot more than just poop pee and cry.

I think you mean " Papá "...? "Papa", means potato in Spanish.  :P

But seriously, minus the joking, I appreciate your kind words. :D

Congratulations, potato!

That's wonderful.  Girls do have their faults, but at least they tend to be less destructive.   When is the due date, again?
