IPODS, ITUNES. ITS LIKE TORTURE, A RUSTY WIRE RIGHT UP YOUR PISSHOLE.
APPLE CAN FUCKIN' BLOW ME. I SWEAR TO GOD, I WILL NEVER BUY A FUCKING APPLE DEVICE, JUST OUT OF SPITE. I DON'T CARE WHAT THEY COME OUT WITH, EVER.
AND IF YOU'RE AN APPLE FANBOI, FUCK YOU TOO.

I have a Sansa Fuze. Plug the cable in, it shows up as a disk drive, copy music, yer done.
It plays FLAC's, dats why I like it.
iPods are too fuckin' restricted.
-
Your options... Sansa or putting Rockbox on an iPoop.
-
I like my 80-gig video ipod. I like iTunes, too, even though it's bloated.
-
Apple is simply the best! I switched over from Windows 11 years ago and I will never go back. All Apple products are simply awesome. The real question is, what the hell happened with your IPOD to make you hate it so much???
-
Clearly, you don't understand how to use one. Which, by the way, doesn't bode well for you. It's just about the most intuitive interface around. But hey, M$ has to sell a Zune to SOMEONE, so I guess you're it, Brasky.
-
Get a Cowon D2; quit fucking around with iShits.

Its not rocket science, bud. What it is, is a bunch of fuckin crap.
I was wiping it clean for my X, who loaded up a bunch of half-fucked lists, and it split albums up six ways from sunday. So I had to restore it to factory settings, which requires a 40 minute d/l from iTunes, rather than just deleting stuff the old fashioned way. Then I had to re-up a bunch of new albums which all had album art, but the iFuck doesn't recognize them unless it feels like it. No rhyme or reason on that one. Had the cable plugged in the whole time, filled the list which took fuckin forever like it was grandpa looking at each album, "Oh, the Pink Floyds, I liked them when I was a boy". Pop the cable off, its fuckin empty. Silly me, it never swapped the data into the player, it just stuffed it into its iHole, fapped its iDick for an iHour. Load the fucker, that takes another hour+
Bottom line is, they want you to buy from iTunes, and anything besides that is a fuckin chore.
Who says anything about Zune? Theres lots of alternatives. My Sony works like a champ, and holds a charge for weeks.
That fuckin thing I was working on was an iPod Touch, btw. I won't put up with all that horseshit for a slick interface. In six months, everybody will have touch models out that work as good if not better, for half the price, twice the HD, and you'll drop folders in the fucker.
-

Ya, I'm looking at those. I like the samsung too.
As I said above (which you replied as I was posting) its not mine. I fucking warned her not to get one. Now she's got a $250 piece of fuck she can't load. Had to get one, just haaaaaad to get a fuckin' apple. She can't even use fuckin' windows and she gets apple. christ.
-
my 8GB nano is just about filled up. I'm not in the market for a new player just yet, but I'm open to alternatives. I was in a sony outlet a week or so ago browsing the mp3s which looked pretty slick, but for now it's enticed me to start purchasing raw albums which is something I haven't done in a long while. I'm considering getting a micro SD card and an adapter to plug buds into my cell phone for the time being.
I wish there was an easy way to delete all the pansy bands on my ipod that i don't much care for.
also: LOL

I have no complaints with Sony. Simple and dependable. I just wish the were expandable, or would make larger capacity.
The Samsung S3 is bluetooth, so you can get wireless earbuds, and it'll also link to your phone and you can talk through it, it pauses the music so you can answer. Pertty kewl.

I have a Creative zen, because i hate itunes and ipod is too restrictive, otherwise I would go with sansa or samsung
-
My first mp3 player was a creative and it stopped working after a few months. While my iPod had problems, it lasted about 4 times as long.
-
I used to have a 60 GB Creative Zen until the headphone jack got busted somehow.
I still have it, I just don't use it. Now I play music off my (modded) PSP when I'm out or whatever.
-

I had a Creative, too. I think it was my first MP3 player as well. Yep--it quit on me after a short while.
Now, I've got a number of non-Apple players. But, I got my first Apple, a Shuffle, last Christmas, and have not used any other player for podcasts since. Except, that is, for my Touch, which I used for music and video. Both are great! The Touch will download podcasts from anywhere you can find a Wi-Fi signal. But, yes, restricted.
-
I loved my Creative Zen. Still ahve it in a drawer.
It's been replaced by an iPod touch, which I have no problems with myself.
-
I have the 160GB iPod classic, because I prefer the clickwheel interface and a genuine HD, not a glorified stick of RAM. They stopped making 'em that big because they had HD issues, a supplier I think, so I'm glad I got it. If it ever craps out, I'll put a 250GB drive in it. I did that with my old iPod (well, just 60GB at the time) and sold it. It worked great for music, I just wanted a color screen and the ability to play movies. I charge the battery like once every week and a half or 2. It has battery life like I wish my damned cell phone had. And I use it every day, in the car, at work, around the house (that's why my little South Park guy has earphones, I'm always wearing 'em). Love it.
Sounds like Brasky's problem was the monkey, not the machine. I mean, not exactly him, but the person who created the problems he was trying to fix. And there's all kinds of neat tricks for album art. I have a script that pulls them from the Amazon database, you just have to have your ID3 tags correct (which is probably why the albums were all split up, too. When you file share, you get jacked up tags with lots of spelling errors).
PS - Speaking of music, 311 is the worst fucking "band of musicians" in the entire universe. If I could, I'd banish those fucking tool bags to Saturn.
-
You obviously have no clue.
Yayyy, Kenny to the rescue.
Hey dick, guess what? I could've wiped clean (right-click), and reinstalled every fuckin file in my Sony in less than ten minutes.
In iTunes, you'd never accomplish that. Never. Any device where I can freewheel like a drag-n-drop drive is infinitely superior.
The whole purpose is so they can sell you their iShit at 99c a pop. If that was M$ you'd be reaching deep to rip ass on their idiotic proprietary burdensome interface. But NOOOO! Its Apple!!! Which makes it intelligent, by default. Guess what, speedo. No, it doesn't. And the fools who fall for that crap need to check their head. Something shouldn't be restrictive when it doesn't have to be. It shouldn't take seven steps when one is sufficient. So good luck with your self-imposed handicap, label-maven.
Recycled quicktime shit.

I think you just had one bad experience with apple and should reconsider. I never in the entire 10 or 11 years using Apple, had one bad experience. I find Apple products not only easy to use, but rock solid in their customer service, OS and hardware. If Apple keeps doing what they are doing, I will never go back to windows.
-
apple is overrated and therefore overpriced. You see, Apple pays its product designers to jerk eachother off, which is why they feel justified in charging you more $$$ for a similar product produced by a competitor.

iPods aside, I would like to know why an Apple computer costs so much more than a PC. And I don't want the "because they're better" answer. :?

Because they're counting on people not having enough technical skill to put together a Hackintosh.
-
The reason I love Apple products is number one, I never have any problems with them. Number 2, Apple makes everthing VERY easy to use. Number 3, anything I need to do with computers, Apple has the solution.
I have no problem paying a few $$$ extra for Apple products because I know my $$$ are being used in awesome research and development for future products. Apple is number one for many people for good reason.

PCs are made from commodity hardware, so competition keeps prices low.
Apple has a monopoly on hardware that can run OS X (except for, as TimeLady mentioned, Hackintoshes, but 99%+ of Apple customers don't have the skills to build one, or the motivation to keep it updated without Apple killing it), so they can set prices however they want. Plus, the high price tag reinforces the image people have of it as a sophisticated, high-end piece of art. Apple makes a killing on hardware sales, and could easily lower their prices, but then they'd be seen as a "bargain" manufacturer, which goes against the entire brand they're trying to build.
Apple makes everthing VERY easy to use.
Yeah, it's important for things to be dumbed down if they're meant to be used by retards.

That is a new term. We used to call Apple knockoffs Crapples but I do think I like the term Hackintosh.
An Apple is a status symbol that is why and it is made up of monopoly hardware. It is the BMW of computers or at least it wants to be seen that way. Many of the advantages which Apple had over PCs are slowly disappearing. Now it's only major advantage is due to it being less popular than PC far fewer hackers attempt to make Apple viruses. Which I find kind of stupid on the part of trojan developers. Logically Apple users tend to be more affluent that means they are more worthwhile targets than some poor guy who throws together a couple of hundred bucks on a used PC. Maybe they are banking on the PC user being more naive.

Telling Mac people their shit's fucked up is like telling a Trekkie a particular Star Trek movie sucked. They just won't accept it, Apple never made a shitty product, software or hardware.
I'd rather talk to an impartial Roger Ebert, not someone who starts drooling about all things Apple. I'm willing to admit they've made some good products, but not all things are touched by the golden balls of a smiling god.
I'd have bought FOUR iPods this year if they had drag and drop. They're shooting themselves in the foot. Now I just outright refuse since I've found quality elsewhere. Before I investigated other products, I figured - like many people - that iPod was the cream, and everything else was second rate. Thats hardly the case.
And its outright hilarious how Mac people will say Windows is shit because you have to tweak and dick around with it, then they'll turn around and proudly tell you how they had to tweak and dick with Mac stuff. I've only had a handful of times over the last fifteen years where I had to do anything tougher than reboot. Maybe ten years ago, when drivers were fickle. But everything nowadays is plug-n-play, so that old masturbatory Mac clique needs to pull its head out of its ass, nobody cares unless you need real leet skillz and fuck around in the 32 a lot... If thats the case, I could understand having some valid and intelligent criticisms of M$ - but you'd probably be running open source.
-
The only reason I have a Mac anymore is because it's very stable with my audio recording software/hardware. Otherwise I'd just have PC's.

If Brasky were so inclined, he could simply turn the iPod into a disk, use WinAmp's media library and drag and drop his stuff on there. It'll work, if you hate iTunes that much. I know it can be done, but I don't use Windows, and I like iTunes just fine for my iPod usage. Anyway, just Google the How To on that...

Nah. I have the iTunes set up properly. Now that I deleted everything and did it right. Did it the same day, in fact. Its just that it took me three hours to un-fuck the thing and do it right, from scratch. And its unlikely anyone here woulda done it much faster, maybe you woulda wiped-hands-on-pants in two hours.
Figure 45 sec per album, 70 albums onto the iTunes, then onto the player. How long would that take you? I did 'em one at a time because I was checking each file for faults. Plus the factory default re-set.
I didn't want to put 400+ albums into iTunes, because she would get the brilliant idea to start fuckin' with it again. So everything thats in iTunes is whats on the player, no more no less. And she's not allowed to charge it in the USB either, wall jack. It will never touch another computer again, until I change some fresh albums.
The only thing that I'm not satisfied with is the album art, aside from my general annoyance.
Its a shame, cause its a really nice player. Slick. You can argue to the contrary til you're blue int he face, but you really can't convince me you'd prefer the proprietary iTunes interface to it being optional. If you chose to utilize it, fine. Thats how it should be. I'm not wacky about it chattering away with the mothership behind my back, especially in a few years when albums are embedded with serial numbers.

Yeah, I never liked the iPod because of its near forcible lockin to Itunes (and the Itunes store). Plus, most of Apple's products are designed as modular setup, where you add on from their share of products and approved software (and content on the Itunes store). So, it's like you buy into a lifestyle of sorts with no openness possible.
When I get something like a Creative Zen, or even some other mp3 player that can support other formats (Ogg-Vorbis, Speex, and etc), I can mod that fucker like no tomorrow. But an Apple product? Forget it. Hell, they go after people that offer the knowledge to mod their products online with a vengeance. It's like they don't want an 'organic' product culture to evolve. They want to control the product and its use.

It's called manually uploading the music. Check the preferences in itunes when the ipod is connected. once you do that, you should be home free... It really isn't that hard. As far as the touch goes, It's going to take a lot of work to outsell that thing, because as far as I know, you are the first person that has complained about it like you have in my experience. BUT, there is such a thing as an instruction manual, and there are things such as support forums to help you out. I mean really, is it THAT hard to work with? I've worked on hundreds of them since the very first one, and have not had some problem like you have described. I have a 1000+ stong cd collection AND a 500+ dvd collection that I ripped to my itunes and I get to play on any of my apple devices and TV. Never had that problem. Album art, calendars, address book, music, podcasts and playlists, and no problems...

yeah, that's what I have it set on. I can manully add music to the playervia itunes, but i can't figure out how to take slected music off the player to make room for new tracks. I ended up doing it last night, but i had to delete the songs from itunes itself, then re-sync everything else to the ipod. it was kind of a pain in the ass. I'm with Brasky when he says that a drag 'n drop player would be infinitely more convenient.
-
BUT, there is such a thing as an instruction manual, and there are things such as support forums to help you out. I mean really, is it THAT hard to work with?
No, it really isn't that hard to work with.
That doesn't mean I should be bothered fuckin' around with Apple's creative solution to moving a folder from one drive to another.
Also, it didn't come with a manual, afaik. If it did, she woulda been flapping it into my face telling me to read it. I assumed it was a video tutorial in the player somewhere, or available in iTunes as a free download.

I ended up doing it last night, but i had to delete the songs from itunes itself, then re-sync everything else to the ipod. it was kind of a pain in the ass. I'm with Brasky when he says that a drag 'n drop player would be infinitely more convenient.
In manual mode, you just delete the music from the ipod. That's it...
-
You obviously have no clue.
wow.
back with MORE creative comebacks...
this one was recycled 3 times in less than a day.
Ken is one of those people who thinks everyone who doesn't like what he likes is an idiot.
I'm one of those people who thinks if a design sucks, I won't buy it. And I'll probably bitch about how amazingly stupid a billion dollar company is to alienate half the world.
Apple took the world by storm. They sold something like 170 million units. I'll bet they woulda sold TWICE that many if they didn't insist on iTunes.
Apple relied on the benevolent giant to support Mac, first gen iPod was Mac only. They create iTunes to be supported in Microsoft.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itunes
This is why they shove it up your ass, Kenny. They want your thousands of dollars worth of CD's to be obsolete. The player is a platform, not the real product. More than half my stuff is off my own discs, ripped lossless and then compressed to 320 or 192 mp3, depending on the band. (Floyd would be 320, something like AC/DC would be 192). They want the average users private library to be problematic, and instead buy the tunes online from them.
In iTunes, several of the albums are "unknown artist" but my Sony reads them all. In iTunes, 80% of the cover art is missing, in Windows 80% has art and the missing ones are because there is no art in the folder. I suspect the ones that display cover art in iTunes were probably downloaded from iTunes, meaning 100% of albums ripped and encoded by me did not work properly. (although they work fine in Windows) That 'track record' of theirs regarding my library is fucking awful. I could not, in good conscience, sell a product to the public that performed that way. iTunes (the music source) should be a convienent way to acquire music, not a product that renders your private collection useless.
On January 6, 2009, Phil Schiller announced in his Macworld 2009 keynote speech that over 6 billion songs had been downloaded since the service first launched on April 28, 2003.[36]
At the previous Macworld Expo 2008, Apple CEO Steve Jobs stated that the service had set a new single day record of 20 million songs on December 25, 2007. He also announced that the iTunes Store will offer over 1,000 movies for rental by the end of February.[37] The iTunes movie catalog includes content from 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros., Walt Disney Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios, and Sony Pictures Entertainment. These movies will also be transferable to all 6th generation iPods.[38]
YOU obviously have no clue. If iTunes was a M$ product with absolutely no change in design, it would be ridiculed right out of existence.

That's what happens when you assume! LOL Seriously, there are manuals on the apple site.
What part of "getting it somewhere online from Apple in digital form" was I unclear on?
Did it come with a paper booklet? NO.
Could I have Googled "iPod Touch Users Manual" and gotten 2,953,456 results in 0.1 seconds, with the top result being Apple.com? YES.
I still haven't, and I won't. Because its not my fucking device, and I don't plan on reading (torturing myself with) 100 pages of crap because iTunes SUCKS BALLS.
-
Yeah, I never liked the iPod because of its near forcible lockin to Itunes (and the Itunes store).
I've used iPods for years, and never felt compelled to buy anything in the iTunes store--virtually all ripped CDs and MP3s downloaded from elsewhere. The exception--the free Pepsi offerings. I think I bought one song, originally, to see what the process was like.
-
Ken is one of those people who thinks everyone who doesn't like what he likes is an idiot.
He's one of those people who think people who fling expletives because a product isn't designed the way they would design it is a fucking moron.
By the way, I didn't bother to read the rest of your uninformed bullshit.

My wife got an iPod as a gift. It's sitting on a shelf right now, hardly ever used, but that's just us.
Since it plays commodity MP3s, I think it's a perfectly good product. I use gtkpod to put files on it, since I use Linux, and it works just fine.
What I reject is DRM. I tried using the FTL advertiser Audible.com or whatever it is, and I was completely disgusted.
Audible.com only works with specific MP3 players, because it doesn't use MP3. It uses only proprietary, closed file formats. That's why it lists "compatible" players on its website. There is no way to convert the files to generic formats, nor is there any way to play the proprietary files in anything except Audible's own software, which runs only on Windows or MacOS.
The iPod is a cute, expensive toy. No problem, lots of people buy expensive toys.
-
Dude, I just used foobar to convert the Audible files I have to .mp3s. Works fine.
-
Apple sells all kinds of DRM free content now, through iTunes. If you reject DRM, you should LOVE Apple, because they beat up the labels on it until they finally caved. No one else had the clout to do that, but they knew their customers wanted control over the products they buy, and now, you can upgrade your existing library of old AAC's purchased from iTunes to DRM free versions for a very small fee, and DRM free content started out being $1.29 per song, instead of 99¢, but now they are lowering the price to make them cost the same.
-
I've had the same iPod Nano for years now. It was given to me as a gift and it only holds 1 GB of storage. I tweaked the firmware with a HEX editor to adjust back-light and change wallpapers on it before they could be changed. It's terrible as a storage device and I look at it more as a platform to listen and organize podcasts on.
-

Foobar, really? I'll have to look that one up. Thank you.

Any more suggestions, ah, "Dude"?

Since neither the Audible.com nor Foobar applications have Linux versions, so am I.
What is the Audible ".aa" file fornat reported as in Foobar? I tried most of the add-ons, but it still wasn't able to open the file. Maybe you have a plug-in that I haven't found yet.
-
I use a Sansa Fuze. I love it. My single complaint is that it's a dip shit proprietary connector. Every other device I own is mini USB.

Nobody puts baby in the corner, right Ken?

You'll not admit that which you know is the Achilles heel of iTunes structure.
Money.

That I can agree with you on. It used to be a nice little music player for the mac before Apple bought it. It really started sucking once apple bought it. I forgot the actual name of it, but it used to be a 3rd party app. Now it;s just a slow, bloated and outdated piece of shit. But what it does well is work well with the apple devices. But it is slow as hell.

I guess I'm the one person who bought a Zune 120. I love it though. My only major complaint is that I have to convert my flac files to wma lossless for them to sync. Other than that, it's pretty decent. I just set it up to sync my whole library except for songs that have a low rating. I use Media Monkey to manage tags and album art. Pretty easy now that I have it all figured out. I just have to stay on top of the tags when I rip/download them. Otherwise, if I change them (even slightly) the Zune re-syncs them as a different album. But, there's a hack that allows me to open the device as a hard drive, so I can just delete them when that happens rather than format the whole device.

Well, I think that you are the only one that has one of those... Is it any good?

I have an Zune 30G I got off Freecycle (had to open it up and reattach the battery cord, works like a charm) and I really love it. Very easy interface, looks great, and the sound is quite good. (I agree with Icculi, it is a pain in the ass to convert all my FLAC stuff...but you only have to do it once.)
The Ipod has terrible audio output. I listened to it with my Shure earphones, the same as I do with other players, and the sound is really unsatisfactory. The bass is lacking in depth, and the highs tend to be tinny. The best player for sound output, IME, is the Creative Zen. I really wish mine hadn't fallen in while I was washing dishes.
-
The nice thing about iPods is they are format and source agnostic. I loaded on all my Napster and Gnutella mp3's, even Ogg and VBR encodings play just fine. It doesn't care what file format you use, except for WMA (or WMV), because Microsoft wouldn't let 'em have access to their proprietary media codec. I can put any old AVI or MPEG, really any format that Quicktime will play, on my iPod and watch it too.

A friend 'o mine showed me the Zen a few weeks ago, didn't listen to it but really liked the display. Plus you can swap the microSD cards out, which is cool.

That Touch I was fuckin' with converted WMA to mp3 automatically. (I forget if it requested permission)

OH! That's cool, must be new in the latest iteration of iTunes.

yah. my nano does that too. and it does bring up a dialogue box and ask you to OK it.
-
Well, I think that you are the only one that has one of those... Is it any good?
Well, I wanted a larger capacity mp3 player so I was basically looking at the Zune 120 or iPod 120 classic. The Zune won out for me because: larger screen (videos look great on it), wifi capability (not all that great now, but hopefully will get hacked later), and built-in radio tuner (meh... but bonus). The only thing the iPod had was waaaaay more accessories. Which, is kind of a major issue, but I can live with it.

The Samsung S3 is bluetooth, so you can get wireless earbuds, and it'll also link to your phone and you can talk through it, it pauses the music so you can answer. Pertty kewl.
I don't carry around an MP3 player or a cell phone, but if I carried both, I would want them to be the same device.

I don't have a house phone.
My next cell will probably be all-in-one, should be fairly common in a year or two with quality. You can get 'em now, but I don't know how good the tunes sound or how big the storage capacity is. Never really looked into it with any seriousness.

I use my land line so little, every time I need to give the number to someone, I have to pull out my wallet and look at a little piece of paper with the number written on it. The only thing I use it for is calling my parents every couple of weeks. I pretty much hate phones.
The iPhone seems pretty slick, but my guess is you wouldn't want that. Apple markets it as an iPod (http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-3gs/ipod.html).
Everyone wants small phones with more features. The only special feature my cell phone has is rotary dialing.

One of these days I am going to need to break down and get a smartphone (http://), but I want to put it off as long as possible.

Nokia N97 gets decent reviews but X has one, so fuckthat. I'm kinda lolling now, never realized she coulda saved herself 250 bx by using the phone as an mp3. Asshead, she is. I can't wait to tell her.

I spent the morning looking at a whole bunch, mainly Samsungs and Palm. That one she has ranks right up there, one step below the hottest shit. (not a true 'smartphone', which are basically little PC's)

Me too, for the most part.
I don't give a rats ass about the camera in my phone, because I know it takes terrible pix. But if it took good pix, I'd use it. I know my phone has Bluetooth, but I have no reason to use Bluetooth because its just a standard phone. Ringtones are ghey, and those headsets are gheyer.
But if my phone had wi-fi, Bluetooth, mp3, web browser, e-mail, touchscreen, camera, microSD expansion... I'd freakin ATTEMPT to use it before I bought a goddamn $250 mp3 player.
Now I'm just gettin' pissed off...

The only valid purpose of a ring tone is that it distinguishes your phone from the 15 others around you. If all phones sounded the same, you wouldn't know whose was ringing.

One of the better ring tones I've heard is one that starts off soft and then gets progressively louder. It says, "Hey, your phone is ringing. It's the phone! Answer the Goddamn phone!"

dumb logic.
i've been in crowds where any number of various ring tones generates an automatic, reflective reaching for the phone, by a number of people.
i had the theme to the GODFATHER as a ringtone.
that's the only way , nigra

Mike, I have a lot of respect for your ability to describe things in a literary fashion, but I think we've reached an impasse. That ringtone you describe, it doesn't sound very appealing to me. In fact, it sounds like something that would push me right over the edge.

Perhaps I should have said, "More innovative."
Then there is the one that says, "Quick, hide! It's your wife!"
Mine is just the standard ringtone that came with the phone. I will not pay for a ringtone!

I don't use my smartphone as a media player because I don't want the damned thing to lose its place 1hr and 45 minutes into an FTL podcast because someone called me. There's no bookmarking feature on those. :(
I've been using a $100 (cost 3 years ago) Insignia player that I got for Christmas. It has 2Gb of storage. I've gone through 4 sets of headphones with it and it is starting to crackle when the headset connector gets jiggled a little but I'm going to use it until it gives out. Occasionally I have to wipe it out by resetting because the album art gets out of whack.
My wife had a Sansa player but I just got her a Zen player for $79 (from Costco). It has 8Gb of storage and a bigger screen than my Insignia. I don't really get the controls on it, but i load it up with songs and audio books for her and she seems pretty comfortable with it. If mine goes any time soon that's what I'm going to get for myself.
I use Windows media player to manage mine and get along just fine with it. Sometimes I drag and drop files using windows explorer, but just to remove them. I also use "Overdrive" to download audio books from the public library. That's how the Mrs and I have been listening to the Sword of Truth series.

Several votes for Creative Zen.
I'm pretty sure those (I get a little befuddled) have the microSD expansion.
Not surprised the iPhone doesn't bookmark, they don't care as long as you buy from iTunes. Songs are four minutes, thats what they sell.

You should be able to set up bookmarks: just right click on the media and click Get Info then the Options tab and the Remember Playback Position checkbox.
I am seriously considering upgrading my iPhone 3G to the 3GS. Not looking forward to having an unjailbroken phone though: http://thebigboss.org/2009/06/28/iphone-3gs-jailbreak-delayed/

<< Not an iPhone guy.
I'm kinda interested in the Samsung Mirage, but not enough to buy it.
-
<< Not an iPhone guy.
I wasn't either. I hate Apple.
I was frustrated with the phone before I jailbroke and customized it.
I'm still ambivalent about getting the 3GS, because of that fact. I'm leaning towards it's better to be safe than sorry and get the in-the-future-jailbreakable phone now rather than wait and maybe miss out. What do you think?
-
I'm waiting for a non-shitty Android phone to come down in price, and for the pricing models on data plans to not become insane. That's what I hate - I have no problem spending a couple hundred on a phone, but ~$100/month for a combined voice and data plan is ridiculous.
And, un-threadjack - I've owned 4 or 5 different models of Creative Zens, back to the original one that held 6GB and was the size of a CD player (people in my high school used to ask "where does it open?"). Current one is a 30gb Vision:M that's approaching 3 years old. I also have a 4GB Sansa Clip that I use at the gym and with the aux-in of my car stereo.

I like my Creative Zen Vision:M, but it's getting outdated. I haven't really been such a fan of the new Creative stuff, but the upcoming Zune HD looks sweet. The problem now is that all the companies are obsessed with flash storage. That's fine, but I won't buy anything under 30GB, which is right at the top of the flash-based player range right now.
-
Agreed. As much as I hated the original Zunes, the new ones are honestly better than even some Creative players as this time.
-
I like my iPod classic cause it has a physical button that I can press without taking the thing out of my pocket.
Same here...Im using a 20 gig that I bought for my daughter 5 years ago...It has never had a malfunction. My only problem with it is that it is a tad bulky in my pocket. Maybe my daughter will pass me the new one I bought her last year...its of slimmer design. 8)

I love my G1 Android phone. yes, it has its quirks. But at least I'm able to pretty much do anything I want with it and not be locked out by a company who thinks they know best. Which, coincidently is why I have no Windows machines at home. All have been switched to Linux for some years now. I'm just waiting for iPhone developers to get sick of Apple's bullcrap and move to Android.
-
Is it possible to run Android on the iPhone hardware?

I was going to let a coworker copy the audiobook I, Robot to his iPod because it is already on my work laptop. Unfortunately for him, I don't keep that pseudo-virus known as iTunes on any computer I own, and apparently* that's the only way to load content onto an iPod. What crap. I've got about half a dozen ways to put content onto my $80 16G MP3 player.

-
I forgot to mention. I got an upgrade for my birthday. I was using a 2Gb Insignia for the last 3 years:

The wife just gave me a 16Gb Philips GoGear Aria:

No my little one has a bunch of kid music on the old one, as well as some books on audio and a few videos I ripped from Youtube.

* I know nothing about ipods, but this dude does all kinds of stuff with him, so I expect him to know.
why didn't you just ask him for jump drive?
-
why didn't you just ask him for jump drive?
I have it on Overdrive media console and the licensing won't let me copy it. I can only download it to a player the system recognizes as a valid player. Usually I download books and copy them for both my wife and I so we can listen to books together and talk about them. That's how we are both enjoying the Sword of Truth series.

LMAO So true.
I've ran into this same exact issue before as well and I think its hilarious. I copy music to my player using Explorer! I can use WMP9, or the SanDisk software, or WinAmp, etc. But I just use Explorer because that is the simplest way to do it. iTunes is one of the most horribly written media player programs out there.
-
I have two ipod models, plus a number of other MP3 players, including an Insignia. That way, I'm covered, no matter what. Still, 90=% of the time, I opt for the ipods. Virtually all of my podcasts are heard on a shuffle.
-
I don't listen to FTL as much as I used to. In fact, I didn't miss a show for about 2.5 years, then quit during the spring and got into some books and some tech podcasts for a while.
Yesterday I downloaded the last week of episodes and burned them to CD to listen in my car. I get tired of touching my MP3 while driving and hitting pause when the phone rings. I like this method.

ahh...i see. Im not a fan of using itunes exclusively for the ipod; though I don't mind the hardware. the ipod has a sleek design and the interface is simple and easy to use. about the only cool thing that I can do with itunes is download podcasts and have them automatically organized.
overall i'm disenfranchised with apple products. they're overpriced. I'm thinkin about getting a new laptop within the next four or six months, and apple is out of the question. For their price, I could get the HP i'm interested in (http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/store_access.do?template_type=series_detail&category=notebooks&series_name=HDX16t_series&aoid=33495&kw=hp%20hdx16t&tafcjnef=fy09&ppc=CCp25707184) and a copy of Adobe inDesign.
the difference between a 15in macbook and an 17in macbook: $800
the difference between a 16in HP and a 18in HP: $300

I'd buy a HP laptop right now, if I was looking to spend laptop money.

I'd buy a HP laptop right now, if I was looking to spend laptop money.
I bought a HP dv6305 last year for my mom. Very nice, quick, nice screen and keyboard.
About a month past when they would have replaced it for free, a known problem occurred with the motherboard, where it simply cannot see the wifi card any more. OS says it just doesn't exist.
So $450 for a new motherboard, or $550 to replace the machine entirely.
HP needs to do something to make me buy their hardware again. So far...

Should have bought the extended warranty. Laptops start to wear out after a year. Connectors, batteries, frayed cords, etc. I've had my Dell since 2006 and I've replaced every single part in it except a plastic bezel piece and the DVD drive because of wear/malfunction.

idk about that I think it just depends. I personally don't like dell. I've only had one desktop from them and I couldn't configure anything except the ram in that piece of shit. The hard drive was covered by metal that was bolted in etc, etc. But I've had several laptops. I have an hp, sony, and acer(great laptop imo). Hp I had for 8 years, the sony for 6 and the acer for 3. Never had to replace a single part in any of them. I did upgrade the ram on the acer though.

Or you just buy a USB wifi thingamajig for less than $50....

As nice as that sounds, the MB problem messed with the USBs too. I tried that, I assure you.

That's my experience, too. It's important when talking about the "extended warrantee" that they make money selling them. Lots of money, that's why they push them.

well look at that. ask and ye shall receive. If it's not some problem from the users end I'm pretty sure any company would want to cover it's own ass.

Not the first time I called them, but that was a 12 month program, not this 24 month program. I'll call them again, thank you.
Oh crap, they list the RV005, and RV009, but mine is an RV006.
I'll still call, just to nag them and tell them that they shouldn't be so completely idiotic about fixing a known problem, but oh well.

I'm repeatedly amused at the Windows snobs bitching about iTunes being the dominant system and somehow "shutting out" Windows people who refuse to put free software on their computer. For years and years, Macintosh users dealt with much more significant and irrational bullshit from vendors who pretended the only OS was Windows.

If iTunes was a Windows product, Mac people would laugh at it.

You claim that you're amused by Windows users bitching about iTunes and how it's shutting them out. I don't know anyone saying those things. I know a fair number of Windows users, myself included, who don't like the Windows version of iTunes, but I don't know anyone who thinks they're being "shut out" of anything because they refuse to install/use it.

Try a Linux forum. But then, there wasn't a Linux client so it's kind of hard to argue that they weren't being "shut out".

With Linux, it's usually more about what it isn't shut out of...at least as far as commercial applications go :P

This. I refuse to install iTunes or any other Apple product on my system. Hell I even use "Quicktime Alternative" to keep that Quicktime nonsense off my system.

He's talking about someone not being able to use his iPod without having iTunes installed on Harry Tuttle's machine...not quite the same thing, since Harry Tuttle isn't complaining about not being able to access content. In fact, it's the other way around. The guy with the iPod couldn't get it.

I believe my only 2 items I own that are Apple related are Quicktime and various Beatles paraphernalia (shirts, posters, cd's, pirated mp3's).

iTunes, iPod, same paranoid bullshit.

Yeah, but he's not complaining of being locked out himself. He's relating a story about someone with an iPod who was locked out. That's kind of the reverse of your statement. It's the iPod user who was locked out :P

The cto of the company is dvd-jon,the guy who came up with decss which cracked dvd copyright protection.
His arrest on his 18th birthday for having written decss, after receiving an award for doing so while he was still a minor, reminded me very much of the invention of the Infinite Improbability Drive in The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy:
"He left after getting the award and was immediately lynched by a mob of respectable scientists, because nobody likes a smart-ass."
Double thumbs-up on dvd-jon's venture, and I'm off to see what it is.
Edit: Never mind, Windows and Mac only. Fuck him.

No. I don't. I got mine on eBay.

Yeah, but thankfully, even though you're hopeless, you don't matter much.

My 8g nano is about all filled up. I'm to the point where when I get new music, I've gotta recycle the older tracks/artsits/albums I'm really not into at the moment. I might hafta get a new mp3 player. my brother just got one of those new fancy, ipod touch screens. pretty nifty.
As much as I don't want to buy back into the apple franchise, I'm thinking about purchasing one of those guys just for the wifi capabilities...fill the nano with podcasts and keep it in the coach (car).

I have a 16Gb GoGear Aria player. I still can't get anywhere near my whole audio collection onto it, then again, I can't get my whole collection onto any existing hard drives I own. The important point is that you can get this 16Gb player for under 80 bucks now. I don't see the real benefit to paying more for any of the iPod products.
-
I have an 8 gig sansa with an 8 gig SD card in the expansion slot and it works great. One of the biggest weaknesses of the iPod is the lack of expansion slot.

The iPod has no weaknesses!
All caps, huge font.

I like iPods, but they do have their drawbacks. One of the biggest is that they can't be married to more than two (I think it is) computers. With my Insignia, I can just plug it into any ol' machine, and download away.
Still, the day I got my Shuffle was the day I pretty much stopped using any of my other players. Except my Touch.

My cell contract is expiring in the upcoming year, and that iPhone sure is alluring. Especially since the 3G is so cheap now. It's the iPod touch part of it that I want though. I just don't know if it's worth it!

I was thinking of that too. But right now I kind of don't trust AT&T. They are currently my provider, but I'm looking at how they are trying to get users to use LESS data. That's disgusting thinking. I can't stand the idea of a business saying "use less of my product because I don't have enough to go around". They are acting like losers. I wouldn't want to get into any new commitment with them.
My plan right now (since my contract is expired) is that I might transfer to one of those super-cheap Wal-Mart or Metro PCS type plans with no contract and watch and see what shakes out after Google's unlocked android comes out and we see what iPhone does once their exclusive deal with AT&T ends.

Anyone who wants to protect their iPod gets a rubbery protector cover, like the Speck

... but if you do that, the damn thing won't plug into any of the fuxking docking stations (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_1_15?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=ipod+docking+station+with+speakers&x=0&y=0&sprefix=ipod+docking+st)

Yeah, and it means it doesn't slide easily into a pocket or purse. I went rubber for a while and then went back to plastic/metal.

I have one of the hard plastic snap on cases for my sansa and it works fine with all of my accessories...

I thought they were giving priority data usage to iPhone users, which is piss poor for the rest of us.

No. All the business stuff i read, ATTs really doing a piss-poor job with their data and towers. They're the laughing stock of the cellphone world. Their competitors commercials, where ATTs map looks like it has chickenpox? They're being nice about it. Commercials where everybody is ROFLing would be more appropriate.
In a year or two, this is really gonna cripple 'em. Thats why the iPhone is exclusive, it was cheaper to pay Apple whatever the fuck Apple wanted than to fix their infrastructure. ATT needed a reason for people to flock to 'em.

Get the Zune HD. It can sync over wifi...even better than the iPod touch :)
As far as the iPhone goes, it is a neat device. I probably wouldn't mind having one if it wasn't for iTunes and Apple trying to invade and take over my computer with every software update. The "Droid" phones seem like a good alternative...possibly even a better one. I've seen one in action and they have some pretty neat features.

I suspect that map is full of lies.
Look right over Jacksonville FL, that patchy area. Thats I-95. If they can't have full coverage over the most traveled interstate in the nation, they can't possibly be covering rural Texas, the middle of nowhere in New Mexico, half of Nebraska, the Louisiana Bayou, the woods of Northern Michigan... etc. And thats just a few mentioned off the top of my head.
I've traveled each of those places (except the Bayou), and spent hours zoomed in on Goog Maps, looking at little towns and rural villages, checking the populations in Wiki. In those places, there is literally nothing. It would take an hour by car to get even close to a place where it would make sense to provide coverage - yet they color it orange.
I call bullshit on that whole map.

I dunno, it might be easier to get full coverage over the relatively flat plains of Texas. I don't trust the map entirely either, but I will tell you that I have Verizon and often have service when my AT&T friends do not.

Maybe.
Still doesn't explain why they're not covering the #2 most heavily traveled area on the eastern seaboard, in spitting distance from Kings Bay training facility.

Who says anything about Zune? Theres lots of alternatives. My Sony works like a champ, and holds a charge for weeks.
:D I use iTunes, but love my E-Series walkman.
I could be biased through*.
*(even through I bought every single ipod from the original -> touch,.... and only the Original didn't suffer from battery failures)

Wow...I've never experienced a battery issue, and I've been using my current iPod daily for something like four years...

Well, I used to work for Apple a while back, hence why I bought each and every single model. The 4th gen (click-wheel) in particular had lots of battery problems.

And now he works for Sony...

meh - I've worked lots of places; even Japan for a couple years.
Still - being as objective as possible, now that iTunes is DRM free, I *really* like my E-Series walkman, as I literally only have to change once a week, I used it literally every day for at least a couple hours.
Doesn't necessarily make iPods "bad" (except the 4th Gen & it's battery) - I've just had a much better experience with walkman.

Well, at least you've laid out a specific reason as to why you prefer one over the other. I have never owned a personal mp3 player-type device so I have absolutely no basis on which to comment one way or another effectively.
