I dont think I have ever been so pissed off
« on: July 08, 2009, 07:25:49 PM »

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comics_Code_Authority

Basically, there is a Government agency that regulates the comic book industry. They place a stamp of approval on comic books that adhere to their code. The thing is, most comic book publishers don't submit their comics to the agency, and the agency cant prevent distribution (thank G-d) making them even more useless.

What are your thoughts on the CCA?

Alternative Topic: What is the most useless government agency out there? I mean one whose use is openly negative and/or infringes on the Constitution. Dont post things like the Executive branch. We all know it exists, and I am predisposed to say that some level of government is inevitable. I mean useless, amusing, and surprising that it exists. Case in point; Radio Free Cuba, an illegal radio station that transmits 24 hours a day from Miami and is dedicated to fomenting subversive activity in a foreign nation. For its entire length of existence it has been jammed by Cuban authorities.

Ha! The wikipedia entry is really awesome. It essentially shows how the commission is silly and eventually just becomes ignored. I wonder how one would go about finding how that commission receives funding - if any.

I can't find any info about that organization on the interwebs. It must be a clandestine quasi-governmental agency who conducts their business in back rooms and dances around owl statues.

This is not a government agency. It's like the MPAA and RIAA, which are also private.

That's what I was wondering. It is called an "authority" but apparently doesn't have any. It looks like it is simply a trade association that has outlived its popularity.

I think I'm going to spend hours upon hours of research trying to trace the careers of all members of that organization to discern any potential or imaginary links to government or influence in policy. After that, I will build an ungainly web site to try to persuade people that the CCA is trying to take over their lives and is a key factor in the current economic problems, as well as instigator of the swine flu.

Naturally, I think it's fucked up.

...But, there is a realistic purpose.  News stands get hundreds of magazines and comics monthly, the shop owner can't be expected to read every page of every comic.  You know as well as I do, some of this weirdo comic porn, you may not see the explicit stuff prominently displayed on the cover.

I have no intentions of getting into a long, protracted argument about censorship and free speech.  But I don't think its really worth getting worked up about.  Movies, video games, music, they all have ratings.  I don't appreciate there being laws which may bring criminal charges against people who sell to minors, but I do appreciate a general indication of the content, saves me the trouble of watching some pretty mindless crap.

Say, for instance, a SpongeBob video game.  Imagine if you win the whole game, nineteen levels of complete idiocy, and the "prize" for winning the game is seeing Patrick suck SpongeBobs dick.

Think about it.

I know thats a little off-topic for comic books, but it sorta falls into the basic mindset of hidden content.  Once your kid is past six years old, its pretty much impossible to preview every minute of every piece of media you'd allow them to have.

I recall that years ago "Sixty Minutes" had an interview with the head of the Screw Threads Standardization Board. The office had been formed around World War I to standardize the threads of all the different screws. Until then, they came in different sizes, and some turned one way while others turned the opposite. But, about the time time board was set up, industries themselves came up with standards, so from the very beginning there was nothing for the board to do.

The head of the board said he did absolutely nothing, and that his office served no purpose whatsoever. In fact, the reason for the interview was that he was proposing that the office be shut down and his own job eliminated.

How often does THAT happen?

Unfortunately, government is full of such positions.

I reread my own link, and indeed BonerJoe, you are correct. Excuse me as I insert my foot inside my mouth.

I have nothing against private self-censorship, its Government mandated censorship I find distasteful.

And why would a private censorship organization like the MPAA even exist?  At one time some pinhead Senator like Al Gore's whore Tipper lead a campaign to get these banned or regulated so in order to forestall any government censorship, they begin a 'private' regime of censorship.

Should read:

And why would a private censorship organization like the MPAA even exist?  At one time some pinhead Senator like Al Gore's whore Tipper lead a campaign to get these banned or regulated so in order to forestall any government censorship, they begin a 'private' regime of handing out ratings based on friends and enemies.
