How corrupt is your state?
« on: November 29, 2011, 03:42:52 AM »

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2010/05/11/the-most-corrupt-states.html

Where are the most corrupt states located?  Of course, the South.

#4, Delaware
Forgery & Counterfeiting: 1
Embezzlement: 1

#5, North Carolina
Fraud Rank: 1

#24, New York
Racketeering & Extortion: 1

#36, District of Columbia (but it's not a state!)
Public Corruption: 1

New Hampshire is the least corrupt state
This isn't a surprise. After all, NH has the lowest crime, the lowest poverty, the highest averaged median household income, the lowest paid politicians, the least lobbied politicians and so on

The NH rankings: 1 is the worst, 51 is the best (it included DC)
Public Corruption: 49
Racketeering & Extortion: 37
Fraud Rank: 25
Forgery & Counterfeiting: 46
Embezzlement: 39

Mississippi at number 3! Haha, this state is the textbook example of the "good ole boy" system at work.

California is apparently less corrupt than I believed it to be.

I smell extreme BS...they've got Illinois at 47 and Indiana at 49, and I KNOW that's bullshit.

There are 5 factors.

IL ranks high in two of them.
Public Corruption: 16
Racketeering & Extortion: 18

It seems at least somewhat legit.

Quote
• Public corruption, 1998—2008: Convictions of elected and other public officials investigated by federal agents over an 11-year period, from the Department of Justice.

• Racketeering and Extortion, 1998—2008: Code for organized crime convictions, also investigated by federal agents over an 11-year period, from the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

• Forgery and Counterfeiting, 1999—2008: Arrest numbers for producing or distributing fake money and goods over a 10-year period, from the FBI.

• Fraud, 1999—2008: Arrests for false statements or documents produced for personal gain over a 10-year period, from the FBI.

• Embezzlement, 1999—2008: Arrests for surreptitious theft of money over a 10-year period, from the FBI.

By using a decade’s worth of federal data, we were able to minimize changes in local law enforcement efficacy, though some flaws remain: local cases go undocumented, and the FBI data is self-reported by local law enforcement. When combined, however, the data provides a fairly deep look into which jurisdictions are uncovering the most corruption. We leveled the playing field by calculating the numbers on a per-100,000 people basis.

Ok, no offense meant, but this rating system seems like uttter bullshit to me.

Illinois is listed as one of the LEAST corrupt states????

Impossible. The whole system in this state and everyone in it is corrupt to some degree, 3 or 4 governors in prison in the last 25 years. Chicago?....Mayor Daley?.......fugettaboutit!

Illinois is AT LEAST in the top 5 corrupt states, maybe #1, but they're listed as the 4th most honest state. Theres no way.

So that's the nature of the bullshit--that "public corruption" is 1/5 of the score.

Exactly....

All the other categories pretty much fall under "public corruption" if you think about it.

The Daily Beast is a shill lefty online whorehouse smushed up with Newsweek and owned by IAC, chaired by Barry Diller.

I'm not saying they make shit up, but they definitely know how to skew data.

Heres a list of the other online presences owned by IAC.

Fuckin' hipsters, pay attention to the other 2/3rds of the pie.  Who's telling you stuff, and why they're telling it TO YOU.  Only then do you consider the veracity of the article.

Good point Brasky, the numbers themselves are probably BS, in many cases.  I wouldn't doubt they cooked them for their purposes.  Still, some often-cited states "did well" in most criteria.

I found six states with all numbers 20 or higher:

Colorado
Iowa
Kansas
Wyoming
Indiana
New Hampshire

I think that's a pretty representative list of the best of the best, by their standards, but I still don't believe Indiana's "public corruption" number of 40.

Aside from counterfeiting (is that corruption?) Oregon probably looked about the best, by their standards.  Colorado and New Hampshire had strong numbers across the board.  DC, with a "public corruption" index of 1 and a "racketeering and extortion" index of 2, managed to rank 35th, by virtue, apparently, of being too small to be significant in the other factors.

Most importantly, I wouldn't trust any of the numbers, given the source, and the obvious BS factor of Illinois showing near the best, not to mention DC being "better than average!"

It claimed it was done per 100,000 people to the average for population.  I don't know.  I just found it interesting and it logically made sense to me that NH would do well, and it did.  So I posted :(

I dont think anyone here is ripping on you personally for it. At least im not. Its not like you wrote it yourself or anything. It was an interesting read, if for no other reason than to show just how F'ed up the criteria is that they use to rate these states. I dont think they made the "good" states look bad, but they sure as hell made the worst of the bunch look alot better than they really are.

Im glad you posted it.

I'm not ripping on anybody.  Far from it.  There are some legitimate reasons why NH would top lists, no denying that.  (or in this case, bottom)

People like lists.

But sources like The Beast are probably not the best place to get them.

You've got to realize, in cases of big media and big money, they often kowtow in the same circles.

Real estate is a pretty big business, and so is advertizing.  The EIC and/or her boss have a vested interest in ALL stories, and they sit around tapping pencils on their teeth wondering how this is gonna fly in certain circles.  Like, they may not wanna piss off Bloomberg, or Rupert Murdoch, or Ted Turner, or Trump..  you never know when a big property is up for sale, or some such back-room horse-trading.

This kinda stuff makes ALL corporate "journalism" suspect.  And so, I don't completely disregard it, but I take it with a grain of salt.  When journalism and entertainment become foggy, I'll always expect it to be twisted for a reason.

...Kinda like how I take the opinions of certain people with a grain of salt, knowing what's happening right over here on the side-bar >>>>

Statistics are a wonky kinda math, due.  They can be skewed in either direction.  Ask a statistician.  They'll tell ya straight-up, statistics can say anything the statistician wants to promote or discredit.
