Nah. I'd pay the hosting costs myself. And I'd implement it a lot better too. I can even easily import (as read-only) content from a dozen FSP / AnCap forums, and then see if they go all El Neil on me and call their lawyers.
The reason why I thus-far didn't run my own forum (as I ran my own dial-up BBS in the 1990s), or even my own blog was basic cyber-economics. I thought the benefit of integration was higher than the benefit of added independence ("what if everyone ran their own forum?"), and I also wanted to "donate to the cause", so to speak. The problem is that I loved this BBS a little too much. I've given this BBS a lot of brilliant content and a lot of incoming links from other forums over the years - that was a mistake. What Ian showed in September is that people shouldn't just trust him and should work a little harder to attain independence, well, so be it. Lesson learned. Assuming that he was only joking about not knowing that there was backup (almost gave me a heart attack), it was a very noble maneuver. Now we have the best of both worlds - I'm here, everything is archived, and I can fork this BBS if I wanna.
