Title: Help me name the gay podcast
Post by: dalebert on October 19, 2010, 09:32:04 AM
A 2 hour weekly live call-in podcast with 2 hardcore libertarians and a variable 3rd chair guest discussing subjects of particular interest to gay, lesbian, bi, and transexual folks.  I have stopped describing it as GLBT issues from a libertarian perspective because "issues" sounds too political and serious, and though we will certainly venture into the realm of serious, we won't stay there.  For instance, we may talk about sex, relationships, or how so many movies with an LGBT target audience tend to suck.

Fairly extensive discussion has been had here and I've found the feedback very useful:

High in the running IMO are:

Freedom is Fabulous
Don't Tread on LGBT
LGBT and Free

"Oddcast"?

Isn't meant to sound insulting, "queer" is embraced by LGBT folks, right?

Honestly, I was unaware of the connection between log cabins and Lincoln in the name. I just thought the Log Cabin part was just some gay thing I didnt understand.

What in the hell, if anything, did war monger Abraham Lincoln have to do with gay rights? I dont get it.

From their history page (http://online.logcabin.org/about/history.html):

The Log Cabin Republicans have a proud history—fighting to build a more inclusive Republican Party for gay and lesbian Americans.  Gay and lesbian Republicans have chosen to transform the GOP from the inside, working to overcome the forces of exclusion and intolerance.

The name of the organization is a reference to the first Republican President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, who was born in a Log Cabin.  President Lincoln built the Republican Party on the principles of liberty and equality.  The party should return to its roots.  When the organization was founded, the name, "Lincoln Club" was already taken by another GOP group, so organizers settled on the name Log Cabin Republicans.

Well, liberty and equality for folks who didn't get too uppity, that is.
...and those who didn't speak out against him...

Don't Tread on LGBT

I like that one.  I like the idea too, and will definitely tune in and encourage a lesbian libertarian-leaning friend of mine to check it out as well.  Also, your Facebook link isn't working-- it goes to a "content not found" error.

I suspect it only works for some people, depending on your friend network and the extent to which it overlaps with mine.

How about "A Walk Through The Park With An Assortment of Dandies"?

Has a pleasant ring to it.

Would Harvey Milk be deterred by a URL?  No.  He would run with it.

Although, it would be the shambling run of the undead.

--

I think the moral to this little story is, probly don't worry about the URL being the name in a straightforward fashion - whatever name you choose.  Don't limit your scope to whatever can fit neatly into a URL.  The URL is often a bastardization of the name  --  the above might be "dandypodcast(dot)com".  Or something along those lines.

Think outside the box a little.  After all, it is a counterculture project.

In fact, the URL is its own extra zest.  The word itself is an impact, that you use to identify your webcast.  People don't really get that.

Check it out.  Lets say you decide on the name "Gay Freedom".  Are you gonna make your name gayfreedom-dot-com?  Really?  You're listening to gayfreeedom podcast, visit us at gayfreedom-dot-com.

That is the boringest shit ever.

You are listening to gay freedom podcast, visit us at movetokeene.com.  Two messages.  The one-two punch, unrelated material.  The juxtaposition of theme and URL is like a left-brained kind of thing.  People say WHAA? and kind of pay attention.  Its a different sort of imprint than gaypodcast at gaypodcastdotcom.

I'm not saying movetokeene is a good idea, for the url, but whatever one-word message you want to impart upon the listener.  I just used that as an example.

As your attorney, I also advise you to avoid the usage of "pork sword" as a name or URL.

Actually, I just didn't care for the suggestion.  Didn't have to do with the URL.

We're probably going with "Freedom is Fabulous".

No kidding.

But I still wouldn't be constrained by the name fitting a URL.
