Title: Government by lottery.
Post by: Terror Australis on October 11, 2010, 10:06:45 PM
What would happen if people eligible for jury duty were also drawn out of a hat and they were the ones elected to government?

You could even make a reality tv show out of it every 4 years

If your number was picked and you didnt want to do it the position would be redrawn.

How would this be any worse than what we have now?

It would probably be better, since it's less likely the ones who want to work for the government would get in.

I'd think just like jury duty, the people who really want out would find a way out, so, only the people who want to do it would do it.  Of course, just as with any other "compulsory service," the slavery aspect comes in.

I was just talking about this yesterday, how strange. Isn't this the way the ancient Greeks did government? I think it could be better as there would be far less chance of only Ivy League lawyers getting in and screwing everybody else up. Instead, it would be various groups screwing everyone else randomly and with term limits the damage would not be so extensive as it is now with the same group getting in for generations. Of course, those drawn in the lottery should be able to refuse and a new drawing would take place.

They could pay them better than jury duty. People just in it for the money could be better than now.

So the masters are chosen from among the slaves by lot? Yeah, that's going to work.

I'm thinking of the Milgram experiment.

It's not the abuse of power--it's the power to abuse.

No government is going to work. That is the truth of it. Government by lottery would be better for the reason I explained above.

I like it better now where the people of a small town get together for a couple of days each spring and decide a large chuck of what government does.  And they elect several groups of people (selectmen, budget committee, maybe others) that decide much of the rest of the job of government.  And then elect several other sets of people.  And these groups watch each other to look out for one group trying to take to much power from another group or the people.  I know it doesn't work perfect, or even fantastic, but the NH town system of government seems to be the best current system of government in the world.

I understand that if you don't live in NH or follow how government works this many confuse or shock you.  Well, welcome to NH where the people really are a large part of the government and most of the people in elected positions are volunteers.

Someone would undoubtedly screw with the lottery results.
