Gotta do a persuasive speech, but none of my ideas work.
« on: November 08, 2010, 11:39:31 AM »

Apparently for our speeches, they need to be something that people are willing to change their minds on (so no anarchism or capital punishment), something that is not just an opinion, something that must be related to college age students, and it must contain some sort of call to action.

This is very difficult, all the ideas I've had don't work. I can't do anything political since there is no real call to action, I must be very specific in what I want others to do. Another problem is that it must interest college students, but these people don't care about the same stuff I do so finding a topic has proved difficult.

I changed my mind on capital punishment, but that was in high school, not college.

Why do you say that?  Protest is a kind of action, and there are protests for gay marriage and the legalization of marijuana going on all of the time.

How about drinking laws?  Definitely relevant to college students, and definitely a possibility for action-- there are a small but significant number of university presidents who have come out in favor of changing drinking laws because they know full well that underage students are going to drink on campus and want to make it safer for them to do so.  They're called the Amethyst Initiative, and students could support them by joining up or even just writing supportive letters to them, to local papers, etc.

It also can't be a topic that most people already agree with. I assume most students already agree with relegalization of some drugs and I know for a fact many students already think the drinking laws are too harsh.

Right now I'm thinking about convincing people to prepare for the coming hyperinflation.

Drinking age is tough because remember your grade depends on pleasing your teacher, it's likely he won't like that. Find a topic and agree with him even if you are lying through your teeth so you can get a good grade and get past him to the next hurdle.

If you can find an issue you both agree on so much the better.

He's likely a socialist so take that into account. If you appear like you could possibly be a pot smoker don't do legalizing weed because he'll likely assume you are and judge you negatively for it which will likely affect your grade.

Pick something like purchasing a fuel efficient vehicle. Just seems like an easy topic most people can agree on and a socialist eco fascist would love.

My opinion is that inflation is too much of an anti govt topic that a socialist teacher would probably be scared of.

Something most people don't already agree with but could change their minds on, something not just an opinion, must interest college students, and must contain some call to action?   Hell, you should get an "A" just for coming up with something that matches that description.

Public nudity.  Most people, including college students, are not big fans of it when it is pointed out to them that legalization might mean being exposed to the sight of fat people naked.  Convince them that if they support this right for all, it has to include fat people.  Tell them to act in favor of this view by streaking on campus.

Drinking age is tough because remember your grade depends on pleasing your teacher, it's likely he won't like that. . . He's likely a socialist so take that into account.

What the hell kind of college did you go to?   I spent a good amount of time talking politics with my professors as well as drinking with them, and if they were fussy about drinking or non-socialist views, it sure didn't come up.

Does your campus have a free expression wall or tunnel on campus where students can paint graffiti?  If not you can make that your project.  It is liberty oriented and creative students will love the idea.  You can scope out a nice blank brick wall on campus or suggest one be built so students can decorate it anyway they wish.

The obvious speech would be one given about what are you going to do with your life with a college diploma and hitting life and work head on with it. Will you teach, go into the job market, or into the government/military? Will it be about money or love, making money or doing what you love to do like teaching (for instance)? Would you become a CEO or CPO? Would you set aside your college for technical training and learn to work on and maintain Priuses? What are your goals? I think this will get the others thinking.

Here's a idea. I just jotted it down. I think it meets the criteria. What sort of class would give a assignment like this?

Prepare Campus For a Financial Meltdown.

Reasons this may happen:

1. There may be a collapse of the dollar pretty soon.
     a. U.S. Gov spy networks were discovered working out of the embassy in Oslo.
     http://www.vg.no/nyheter/innenriks/artikkel.php?artid=10042489
         1. Norway (and Scandinavia in general) have had good relations with the US. Anti US activists can and will use these spy networks to hurt these relations.
Note: the Hotel pitchered is across the street from the American Embassy in Oslo and the circled window has a great view of it. My guess is a camera was merely placed there for a birds eye view of the US's own embassy but many Norwegians are making a big deal out of it anyway.
     b. Norway is one of the few places with a value backed currency (more oil reseves than actual currency value in circulation)
         1. Friendly countries with hard assets finding dumb excuses to mobilise against the US is a bit of a bad sign.
2. etc....

What Should Be Done:
1. A back up economy should be prepaired for.
    a. inter campus barter system.
    b. Open communications with surrounding vender's.
        1. Farmers.
        2. Loggers.
        3. fishermen.
        5. scrap dealers.
    c. working arrangements with community trademen such as machine shops tailors etc.
Note: keep the community organisers as out of it as possible. A large crises needs all the tools and ingenuity possible.
    d. Competing on campus protection services.
    e. required open carry.
2. etc....

You could do a basic description of how regulation hurts small businesses for the sake of Big Evil Corporations...
Ease 'em into it by describing some of the more evil aspects of Big Business, then come at 'em with a "Well, you know... we though we were doing a good thing....
but maybe we've been helping the B.E.C.s all along!"

What about something not so inflamitory. Like say letting employees listen to music while they work. There have been solid studies done in this area but not everyone is convinced yet. Or, using ergonomic office equipement? Or proving that paying anything less than the customary time and half for a BJ is bad for the house.
