Title: God spoke to me in a dream!
Post by: AL the Inconspicuous on December 24, 2009, 08:18:01 AM
He said He wants me to start a tax-exempt monastery in New Hampshire, join with my fellow believers, buy ever-more tax-exempt land (http://forum.freestateproject.org/index.php?topic=19215), and Gulch there in pursuit of complete self-sufficiency - growing our own food (http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?topic=29041) [2] (http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?topic=31494), generating our own energy, and securing our own local telecommunications infrastructure (http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?topic=21270.0) (offering powerful free MAN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitan_area_network) WiFi, and interlinking with similar establishments throughout the state).

In addition to the holy gospel of Anarcho-Capitalism, our religion shall put particular emphasis on individual empowerment through science and technology, and specifically focus its productive efforts around the holy UNIX operating system and other permissively-licensed software (http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?topic=28400.msg579877#msg579877) (ex. PostgreSQL). The monks will be encouraged to pursue ever-greater knowledge of those technologies, contribute to the public domain code-base, and to use their knowledge to make money selling their services via the Internet.  As those convents become ever more powerful, they may be able to engineer and even manufacture their own open-source hardware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source_hardware) and other technologies, thus bootstraping a high-tech local economy that is free of taxation and other socialist influence!

It should go without saying that even in this collective endeavor our individualist principles must never be compromised - participation in those establishments will always be optional, people will be free to come and go as they please, have families, build their own detached housing on convent grounds, maintain what their fellow monks will recognize as their private property (although for tax exemption purposes the government would not), and so on.  In fact I think reproduction should be highly encouraged (http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?topic=28831) [2] (http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?topic=30621) within our culture, creating a family-friendly atmosphere with many convent-based resources for raising and schooling children independently of the state.  If those children choose to follow in their parents' footsteps, our movement shall have a strong hereditary backbone in addition to continuing to evangelize our movement to the unconverted!

I'm most confused by the first one, "a distinct legal existence"...  Just how much government buttkissing would that require?  :?

I think we can manage most of those, establishing a new naturalistic (i.e. non-supernatural) philosophy while at the same time leveraging the rich history of anarchism in "other" religions.  And, if necessary, I can even learn to channel the spirit of Henry David Thoreau.  ;)

You dont need all of those to be a legal church. Look up the Universal Life Church. They will tell you (they have an active forum) that you only need to be registered, have certain members registered as treasurer and head of the church etc., and hold regular meetings with regular participants to be a legal church.

I nominate Lauren Canario to be our first pope.

Lauren is cool and all, but the last time she was on FTL she said "ummmmmm" way to many times.  I believe the high priestess(pope) needs to be more articulate with her words.  Then again, maybe I misinterpreted her religious chant as a lack of words?

Absent Lauren, I will be our High Priestess.

Can we use mushrooms in our worship?  Has anyone read The Sacred Mushroom And The Cross?  I have not, but it seems interesting.

[...]  All in all I think it is a good idea that God has here.

Yeah, but He picked the wrong person to tell it to.  I am a stranger in a strange land, slow of speech and tongue, and all that.  This idea will have to be picked up by someone else...

Lauren is cool and all, but the last time she was on FTL she said "ummmmmm" way to many times.  [...]

That shouldn't be a problem, the previous pope down in Rome stopped saying anything but "ummmmmm" sometime around 1995!

Absent Lauren, I will be our High Priestess.

Ohhh, sorry, there are a few people ahead of you in that line already...  But don't worry, Mark, when contemplating about a Quasimodo-like character to ring the tower bells - I assure you, I thought of you first.

Can we use mushrooms in our worship?  [...]

Coincidentally, I just downloaded the Know Your Mushrooms (http://tracker.concen.org/torrents-search.php?searchall=know+your+mushrooms&searchany=&searchphrase=&searchnone=&cat=0&searchfields=name&incldead=1&lang=0) DVD from ConCen, but I'm only interested in poison-free mushrooms, which require relatively little sunlight and can thus be farmed in vertically-stacked shelves for amazing protein-per-acre efficiency.  Wild mushrooms are OK too, if you're living near a good forest.  I remember we used to go mushroom-picking in Russia, which was considered totally safe because everyone knew from an early age which species were poisonous and which weren't.  American culture just doesn't have that...

Can you then help me by telling me which ones are poisonous?  Maybe--hopefully, they will be hallucinogenic as well?  I will send pictures?  I could make a decent living off of harvesting them.  Plus I like to eat them:)

I dont think your church has to be separately owned. I read about a guy who made his "church" in his basement. Their "services" consisted of working out. The "holy items" or whatever they're called in his church were barbells, exercise machines, etc. He even had selected books on good dieting and workout routines he encouraged his "congregation" aka workout buddies to read.

I want to start my own church locally anyone want to brainstorm?
I think it might be the one way for a fuck like myself who ain't gonna move to 'Keene', to challenge the system.  At least as far as challenging the tax laws go. I think the free market should offer competition to the stereo-typical Christian tithe (10%), with a 5% donation to the church of the 'Holy Jerk My Shroom.'  My salvation not only tastes better, but it makes you hallucinate and it's 5% cheaper than the leading brand?
