Hey! So here's my stories with skunks.
My first time dealing with a skunk was as a kid. I grew up on a farm and as such there were all kinds of animals roaming around, including skunks. No big deal, you leave them alone they leave you alone. Also, there were quite a few stray cats, and as a young guy I took pleasure in chasing after them whenever I could.
On our farm we also had a small row-boat, and with the boat we had a big green fishing net that was on the end of a pole. This thing was massive, and was probably as long as I was tall at the time.
So one day, I see this black/white cat roaming around the yard. Thinking I was going to have a bit of fun trying to catch it, I snatch up the pole from the garage, raise it over my head screaming, and chaaaaaaaaaaaaarge!
I chased that thing for probably 500 feet with it barely a few feet ahead of me keeping pace, then when I was finally so close that I was about going to trap it in the net I noticed it had a bushy tail. What kind of a cat has a bushy tail? No cat, oh no! I realized it was a skunk, dropped the net, and ran back home.
That was a close one.
My second encounter occurred last night, oddly enough.
I was walking home from a party, that was about a block away. About halfway home I noticed what (again) I thought was a cat or rabbit by some bushes. I kept walking down the sidewalk, getting very close to it. I noticed that the animal was very black and seemed to be backing up into the bushes away from me. Also that it was too large to be a normal cat. I figured, this being the city, that it must be a small dog or lost puppy, because any other animal would logically flee from an approaching human. I got really close to it in the dark, spotted the bushy tail with the stripe down its tail pointing in my direction, and BAM I was across the street muttering "sk-sk-skunk!?" before you know it. I watched from afar as it stopped its little backin-up-dance and wobbled happily around the side of the building.
Sometimes I am so naive.
@Libman: Oh, and a gas mask is futile resistance against a skunk. If you get sprayed (my dogs have been on numerous occasions) then it doesnt matter what you are wearing. That stench wont come out for a week, from your skin.
@Diogenes: Sounds like you need to be more careful around animals
Skunks are like other animals, they are more afraid of you than you are of them. For them, its life or death. Also, when they do spray, they usually give you warning by hopping on two paws first and flashing their tail (what happened to me last night). If it was chasing you then it was probably trying to scare you away from its 4 babies.
