FTL Listener Needs a Job
« on: September 09, 2009, 07:52:02 PM »

If anyone listened to the show tonight, you may have heard me call in asking for advice on finding a job.  I am a college educated video freelancer in Philadelphia, but I have a lot of experience in different areas and I am totally cool with moving somewhere else.  My main experience is in film/video/TV/media, but I have a lot of experience with customer service, as well as some experience as a busboy, a cook, and in retail.

Does anyone in New Hampshire or anywhere else know of any job, media or not, that is looking for people?  Like I said I am happy to go elsewhere, I'll work whenever, and I'm a quick learner.

You guys always seem to have good advice and have helped other people out on the board and the show before, so I figured I'd throw this out there.

Do sites like guru.com, rentacoder.com, odesk.com, elance.com, getafreelancer.com, etc cover the sorts of projects you can do working from home?

Honestly, my freelance stuff is more like on the job type stuff.  I do lighting and stuff on live events and productions.

Only a little bit, because I'm working very little nowadays (gulching on the cheap for a while), and I also have some projects coming in from my past career connections.

Why, do you need help with anything?

Any other tips, guys?  This economy sucks, and I really have held out as long as I can for steady freelance or real full time.  I am just starting a cook job, and will need a second job as well, either that, or its off to the land of no return known as my parent's house.....

Do any of those sites cater to our demographic, or will they all Form 1099 your ass into next year?

I think they're safe, but I never had large transactions go through them before.  I'd read the fine print more carefully if I did.  And don't register with any site that asks for a SS#.

You should move to NH.  A ton of jobs.  Just check the FSP Forum.

I heard the advice given on the air and I dunno.. I have to come at it from a different angle. Not to detract from the topic or badmouth anyone's suggestions- just kinda putting it out here to see what others may think.

Brown-nosing. I can't stand that shit- and I wouldn't want to work for anyone who expects it. I've worked in places where it wasn't tolerated (loved those jobs), as well as in places where it was expected (you can guess.. hated it). I've also held management positions where I had some say in who was hired or fired- and anyone who sucked up got a bad mark from me.. no one is eager to be a good employee that degree, so it's fake. I'd rather hire someone on that seems legit- and depending on the position, they can have all the metal in their faces as they'd like.

I think the advice given is kind of dated but then again I haven't had many mainstream jobs and have been self employed for years- so maybe I'm off.

You might also consider finding someone with an interest in starting up a business. And as a tip.. weddings never go out of style, so you might look into wedding videography. Probably keep you busy on the weekends and you might get some traveling in as well.
