I have noticed the intelligence level here is much higher than the FTL BBS. I really have not bothered to get into any serious discussion over there because no matter what I post it always goes back to something ridiculous.

I signed up at Freekeene, sometimes I lurk around. At first I thought it was weird that they send you a 'stick' in your confirmation email, but then I realized it's to be placed deep up your ass. Apparently they all do it over there.

...but this is what happens when you push for a virtually unmoderated BBS. Sometimes freedom produces results that you might not have anticipated or particularly enjoy, but at the very least this BBS is true to its advertisement.

If robin.m feels that freeKeene forums are a "smarter" group of individuals, that's fine - it doesn't factually cause you (or someone else on this BBS) to suddenly be smarter or less intelligent as a result of discovering her opinion.

Some very intelligent people post here, but a forum whose most popular thread is exclusively devoted to boobie photos cannot expect everyone to be in intellectual mode all (or even most) of the time. :)

At one time I bet this forum had many intelligent threads. The problem is the common topics and even the uncommon ones have been covered several times. The most intelligent thing to do now is to realize the regs have their own points of view and covering what private roads would be like is not all that constructive. It is better just to relax and have fun. If Robin M is looking to discuss some of these topics maybe FreeKeene Forum is the place. Can't fault her for that, in fact it is comendable that she wishes to expand her mind through discussion with others of her ilk.

Anyways, I have not had a serious conversation over here because a lot of what is going on seems to be "not so serious". I can joke around and talk about boobs and what not, but really, I think some of the trolls here post just to read their own words on the computer screen. I like a lot of you and especially the people who actually contribute to the REAL conversations.
I have not been here long and thought that it was a good way to break the ice with the pictures thread, the animals thread, all the fun random threads before I dive into anything serious. One of my first posts here was totally serious, about owning a rental property and all that jazz so I came here with good intentions.
So to close all of this out, I never said anyone here was stupid, but this is probably somewhere I would come to be entertained more than debate or learn...

I have to add that I've heard enough agreement from enough other people to recognize that this isn't just one of my quirky personal eccentricities: a lot of people are getting this impression.
I do wonder if, shutting down the board (as I've repeatedly suggested), would instigate a massive troll migration to FreeKeene and elsewhere, but I still believe that would have more positive than negative results.

At same time, I think by her posts it's fairly evident that robin doesn't garner the same level of amusement at what I think she (correctly) see's as an unjustified attempt at humiliation - and again for what exactly:

Nice. It is a BBS, so if making someone feel bad is what you want to do in order to feel good, then fine - no one here is going to be able to stop you. It's just not surprising that there will be individuals that will be less than impressed by the action.

What the FTL BBS is, is both a filter and a lounge. This is what it became, not by design, but by a natural progression of evolution in an authority vacuum.
The Filter -
Liberty minded people, on the whole, are fairly spiky and intolerant to bullshit, and rightfully so. Now, this often leads to a general intolerance that is... less productive. Every damned one of us is subject to this. Most people who know me know I have more than a little enmity toward conspiracy stuff. Everyone has their pet peeves.
However, a large portion, I'd even say the majority of these small annoyances are fairly just.
The BBS is a fortified wall against a lot of that nonsense, because the hammer drops fairly quickly on bullshit and the Alex Jones/Antisemitic/AntiReptilia/nutbag crowd generally goes elsewhere which I think is a net profit to our crowd.
Yes, the hammer drops too easily and often unjustly. A hair trigger comes with vigilance sometimes. I don't know the solution to this, and I won't deny that I'm rather weak in this regard myself.
The result is often a sense of insularity and xenophobia toward new people, and the feeling of having to get through a gang initiation to become one of the cool people.
But it's a dirty job that, in the end, helps people at the more serious places in the freedom community. Without the BBS, I would argue that many of the people who act like jackasses over there would otherwise be here. Consider that. And because the rules are less tolerant of assholery here, the trolls would behave in a more sneaky, insidious way, where they will slowly annoy without breaking any particular forum rules until people hate being here, rather than just running into the room and yelling "COCK LOL" like they do at the BBS.
The Lounge -
This is a big one. Sometimes, people just like to shoot the shit. Sometimes there are very active freedom lovers who don't really want to be quizzed every fifteen minutes about "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR THE FREEDOM MOVEMENT LATELY?" and "SO, WHEN ARE YOU MOVING, HUH? HUH? HUH?!?" Sometimes peer pressure is repellent, and being too close to the movement at all times can blind a person to how obnoxious that sort of thing can be.
People who know me, personally, will tell you that I do a LOT for the freedom movement. You would not know that at first glance by my presence on the BBS. You would not know that by anything I do online, apart from Think Twice stuff, which has been on the back burner since the movie began and I've been pulling 16 hour days editing and special effecting.
I want it that way, and so do many other people who are active on the BBS. Some of us aren't interested in public recognition, or propagating the movement in general. People who do that, Like the activists, seem to be doing that just fine. Not everyone is a public speaker. Not everyone is a good debater. Not everyone is willing to get locked up. They have not sinned. They do other things.
I'll use a friend as an object lesson - Where would you guys prefer Jason Osborne - Sitting in a jail cell or doing what he does? What do you think is more productive? Let people use their strengths and stop trying to cram everyone into The Acceptable Mold, where anyone who doesn't fit is the enemy.
Activists in general seem to think that their way is the only way. This is faulty thinking and their intolerance toward people with different methods is frankly anti market. Diversity brings progress.
And some people? They just like posting goofy pictures and having a good time, which, last time I looked, is a good thing for the freedom movement. If you tell everyone that your way is the way to think and live, and you are a bitter miserable person, how many people do you think are gonna jump up and yell "YEAH! I WANTS ME SOME OF THAT! I wanna be pissed off at the state all the time and scream from the top of my lungs about how evil the world is!"
Less hating tyranny and more loving freedom.

You seem like a fairly laid back chick. Somebody I could go out and have a chick drink with, you know? I do have one question though. What do you expect from this forum? You came here and almost immediately starting plastering pictures of yourself in various threads, some with boobie emphasis. Take it from me - my suggestive cleavage shots are plastered all over this forum - no one is going to want to talk to you about anything else. That was my mistake too, and I consider myself a fairly competent, intelligent individual. I do not, however, wish to think about politics and talk about it all the time.
Back to the picture thing. Look at Rillion and Joy. Two highly respected female posters here. Both have posted very few photos, none suggestive in any way, and neither get ragged about boobs.
Just relax, it's all good.

I think this is it. Hell it gets boring rehashing the same topics over and over. How many different ways can you say big government sucks? We need an injection of new users so they can talk about that stuff, because honestly I feel I've repeated myself several times and repetition is repetitive and boring. I'm sure others feel the same way.

I am gonna go ahead and say I plan on this being my last post in this thread. If memory serves me correctly the only place on the FTL website I posted "my boobs" was on the shriners page. The picture I posted in the thread here was of me in a sweater, I can not help it if I have boobs you can see when I wear clothes. NOW I know that posting my boobs on the shrine was probably not the best thing for me to do to spark conversation not involving boobs.
I like everyone here, even most of the Trolls... Everyone adds something to the board, even if sometimes it is silly. I think its just the culture shock this BBS presents after you've been here a little while. It almost scared me away at one point. Now that I'm into checking daily on here, well, I dont notice it at all and have to tone it down a bit when I'm on other forums or debating IRL lol.

I do find it weird that the anti-goverment types seem to default to wanting..."governmental" control in situations like this. Private property argument, etc.

You came here and almost immediately starting plastering pictures of yourself in various threads, some with boobie emphasis. Anyways, I have not had a serious conversation over here because a lot of what is going on seems to be "not so serious". I can joke around and talk about boobs and what not, but really, I think some of the trolls here post just to read their own words on the computer screen. I like a lot of you and especially the people who actually contribute to the REAL conversations.
I have not been here long and thought that it was a good way to break the ice with the pictures thread, the animals thread, all the fun random threads before I dive into anything serious. One of my first posts here was totally serious, about owning a rental property and all that jazz so I came here with good intentions.

Tale-bearing is, essentially, any gossip. The Hebrew word for tale-bearer is "rakhil" (Reish-Kaf-Yod-Lamed), which is related to a word meaning trader or merchant. The idea is that a tale-bearer is like a merchant, but he deals in information instead of goods. In our modern "Information Age," the idea of information as a product has become more clear than ever before, yet it is present even here in the Torah.
It is a violation of this mitzvah to say anything about another person, even it is true, even if it is not negative, even if it is not secret, even if it hurts no one, even if the person himself would tell the same thing if asked! It is said that the telling of gossip leads to bloodshed, which is why the next words in the Torah are "you shall not stand aside while your fellow's blood is shed." The story of Do'eig the Edomite (I Samuel Chs. 21-22) is often used to illustrate the harm that can be done by tale-bearing. Do'eig saw Achimelekh the Kohein give David bread and a sword, a completely innocent act intended to aid a leading member of Saul's court. Do'eig reported this to Saul. Do'eig's story was completely true, not negative, not secret, and Achimelekh would have told Saul exactly the same thing if asked (in fact, he did so later). Yet Saul misinterpreted this tale as proof that Achimelekh was supporting David in a rebellion, and proceeded to slaughter all but one of the kohanim at Nob.
The person who listens to gossip is even worse than the person who tells it, because no harm could be done by gossip if no one listened to it. It has been said that lashon ha-ra (disparaging speech) kills three: the person who speaks it, the person who hears it, and the person about whom it is told. (Talmud Arachin 15b).
In Jewish law, all things are considered to be secret unless a person specifically says otherwise. For this reason, you will note that in the Torah, G-d constantly says to Moses, "Speak to the Children of Israel, saying:" or "Speak to the Children of Israel and tell them:" If G-d did not specifically say this to Moses, Moses would be forbidden to repeat his words! Nor is there any time-limit on secrets. The Talmud tells the story of a student who revealed a secret that he had heard 22 years earlier, and he was immediately banished from the house of study! (Talmud Sanhedrin 31a)
The gravest of these sins of tale-bearing is lashon ha-ra (literally, "the evil tongue"), which involves discrediting a person or saying negative things about a person, even if those negative things are true. Indeed, true statements are even more damaging than false ones, because you can't defend yourself by disproving the negative statement if it's true! Some sources indicate that lashon ha-ra is equal in seriousness to murder, idol worship, and incest/adultery (the only three sins that you may not violate even to save a life).
It is forbidden to even imply or suggest negative things about a person. It is forbidden to say negative things about a person, even in jest. It is likewise considered a "shade of lashon ha-ra" to say positive things about a person in the presence of his enemies, because this will encourage his enemies to say negative things to contradict you!
One who tells disparaging things that are false is referred to as a motzi sheim ra, that is, one who spreads a bad report. This is considered the lowest of the low.
It is generally not a sin to repeat things that have been told "in the presence of three persons." The idea is that if it is told in the presence of three persons, it is already public knowledge, and no harm can come of retelling it. However, even in this case, you should not repeat it if you know you will be spreading the gossip further.

To the Shaw, I have the up-most respect for you and I figured if this thread inspired you to head over to the FK BBS and write that long post to defend the FTL BBS, I ought to clarify where I'm coming from. I don't think I expressed it very well. I didn't think anyone from over here cared enough to even listen to what I say over there or would be bothered by what I said so I didn't put that much effort into it initially. Your post actually encouraged me to take a look over here for the first time in quite a while and I glanced over the thread (this one) that seems to have been your motivation for that post.
I think the key here is that Free Keene is a LOCAL interest forum. The name of the city is in THE TITLE after all. That's what sets it apart from the vast majority of Internet forums where the focus is a subject that people all over the world may be interested in. It doesn't make it better. It just makes it more focused. So it doesn't surprise me that it can seem cliquish and come across as condescending, but I think that's a misunderstanding. The local aspect affects what we tend to talk about there. Because we're mostly locals, it tends to be about plans to get together IN THE FLESH to do things, whether it's activism like protests, politics (bleh!), local agorist endeavors, or just fun stuph like movie nights and game nights. And when someone new posts, the first question is "Are you moving here and when?" It's actually a totally reasonable question given the context. I mean, there are tons of really active forums where people are discussing liberty subjects and those discussions probably get very interesting, but over there it just seems out of place. In fact, there are a few people who seem to have joined purely for that, who appear to have no plans to move, and I tend to put them on ignore. I admit I have a rather broad definition of the word "troll", but if most of what you're talking about is not about Keene specifically, it's totally off-topic discussion there.
I realize I tend to be dismissive of the FTL BBS, and actually I'm almost as disinterested in the NHFree BBS for similar reasons, but it's nothing more than a personal preference. It's like when I used to play Everquest and later World of Warcraft a lot, and eventually it got tedious. I never cared for video games much unless they were largely interactive with other people. Now I find I'd rather do fun things with real people in the flesh, including games, simply because I can and it beats the online stuph. I continued to play WoW for about a month after moving to NH and then lost interest. I still think about playing it again from time to time, and I sure as Hell don't judge those who still enjoy it. I might even break down some day and try it again for a change of pace, but I don't tend to entertain the thought for long. It's time-consuming and gets redundant very quickly and so I just can't find it worth the time and money right now when I have so much other stuph I'd rather spend my time on. Similarly, I like porn, but if I had a regular bf, I probably wouldn't watch it (as much). And that kind of expresses how I feel about Internet forums where people from all over the world talk a lot. I really have no idea what they're doing where they are and so it was wrong of me to say they're not "active" in their own ways. It's just not interesting to me personally right now.
I don't mean to be condescending about people who haven't moved here. I admit seeming borderline obsessive about getting people to move here, but I wish people would understand that's just because I'm having a blast actually being in close proximity to thoughtful sane people (liberty-lovers) in a world of indoctrinated drones. Most of you folks are amongst the enlightened, but you're just not here. It's well known to friends that I hate talking on the phone and now I've gotten to where I don't like spending much time on Internet forums. When I do, it's mostly to make real-life plans. This post is one of the longest I've written in probably weeks or even months. My preferences have simply changed.
It's not a judgment of those of you who haven't made the move. It's actually more that I like you and would like to meet you IN THE FLESH and I think you deserve to have all the fun I'm having. I can't help but be enthusiastic and even a little obsessive about encouraging more people to move here instead of just talking-- play games in person; not WoW. Have real sex. It's better than pron. Engage in real agorism with local people instead of just talking about how all the business regulations suck, etc. I deleted everyone from my Facebook recently if I could not at least place a face on the name. They were a bunch of faceless forum handles prattling about whatever and it was just getting tedious for me. If I've even met them at Porcfest or something like that and I remember them, then they didn't get deleted (unless they were just posting about politics all the time). It was a totally self-serving, personal preference thing about how I want to spend my time.
Seriously, I think you get the wrong idea if you think the only point of moving here is to be some holier-than-thou super-activist. More than anything else, I want people to physically be here so we can just hang out and do fun stuph, maybe do some under-the-table trading. If you never show up at a protest or a candlelight vigil or run for office (bleh!), you will get nary a condescending word from me. I think the best things we can benefit from by being local are the things we do quietly and privately for our own personal gain- socializing and a growing local network of agorism.
I feel I understand the demand for a place like this forum. It's a great meeting of the minds when your daily life involves a bunch of morons. It's an escape. I don't feel the need for that escape anymore because my DAILY LIFE primarily involves interaction with sane folks like you. So sure, I feel strongly that so many liberty-lovers just don't know what they're missing out on. But if you're happy where you are, I'm sure you have very good reason. If moving is just too much of an upheaval because of job, family, property, or you just really hate snow, then who am I to judge you? If you do move, it won't make you a better person or a more noble person. I think it'll just make you a happier person. If you do it, do it for yourself, for totally self-serving reasons. If you disagree that it'll make you happier, you don't have to defend your position. You're the only one who gets to make that call. I'm not interested in long Internet debates and sure as Hell not interested in a "forum rumble". I know it's a joke. Just making a point, and the point is, if you're into what I'm into, let's get together and do it! If not, let's all just get on with whatever it is we want to do and leave each other be.

I would like to point out that not everyone has had the same positive experiences with the FSP and NH. While I had a pretty good time at Porcfest, which was my first time in NH, it was because of peeps like yourself and Barskey who were friendly. There were quite a few people there who were really nasty toward me, and for no other reason than I didn't act like they were baby Jesus in a manger.
I had one asshole harass me pretty much non stop for the first three or four days. Fat jokes, calling me old man and shit, (He was older than me, come to find out, and was making assumptions because I have gray hair.) and generally being rude and condescending.
Also, I noticed that the politics among a large group of those people was worse in some ways than a high school. Person X hates Person Y and Z because they said Blahblahblah about Person W. This person's a jerk because of blah. And on and on.
Maybe it's just people in general that I'm complaining about, rather than NH Free Staters in specific, but that was my experience. For every one of you or Barskey or Laur or Bile or Puke, (And various other cool people) it seemed like there were five to ten dingleberries running around.
Like the guy who was repeatedly waving his gun around upstairs at the FTL area, forcing me to go over there and politely inform him that he was bumming people out. That was a treat. Or the lady who got all pissed off because we were sitting at her unoccupied picnic table, and went on a long assed explanation about how "This isn't public space, you know." for about five minutes after I immediately apologized and got up and repeatedly said "Yep, sorry, won't happen again. Got it. I already moved. Sorry. Yep. Got it." But the fucking bitch wanted me to hear a fucking speech about freeloading and explain to me the basics of libertarian principles as if it weren't just a boo boo.
Same woman who started lecturing me about guns without knowing who I was. She looked like a damned fool, and pissed me off.
Sorry, stirred up a rant.
