Title: Does proXPN suck?

I went ahead and paid for a year of it. I like the idea of supporting a liberty-friendly company.

In the first day, it lowers the quality of YouTube and occasionally they stutter, something that's normally almost unheard of. Most importantly, I had to turn it off to watch my favorite porn streams. So far, two different ones were interrupted so continuously they were un-watchable until I turned it off. Isn't porn going to be one of the things you want it for?

I'm probably going to end up cancelling it before it's too late. Does anyone have a suggestion for one that doesn't throttle your bandwidth so much?

Speedtest w/ proXPN : DL rate of a little over HALF of ONE Mb/s
UL rate of less than that.

Speedtest w/o proXPN : DL rate of 16 MB/s!
UL rate of almost 8 MB/s!

Let's hope their tech support is spectacular.

I don't know about "spectacular" yet but they did get back to me pretty promptly. I implemented the suggestions in my setup and now my UL seem mostly unaffected by proXPN and my DL has improved to just under half of what it was without proXPN. That's obviously a substantial improvement. I'm not sure if I can expect the speed to be a whole lot better than that. We'll see how it works out for watching my pr0n.

I signed up for ProXPN last year.  It is definitely not super fast, but I believe I've been able to stream video with it on.  Given the speed hit, I only use it when I'm on untrusted networks or want to otherwise mask my traffic.  With the discounts they offer, it's hard to complain.  It's very cheap.

BTW, make sure you don't just stick to their Dallas server.  I've found that the NY server is much faster.  Currently the primary NY server is chugging along at almost 9Mbps symmetric.  New York 2 just gave me this:

My own ISP caps my connection at 50Mbps, so the download is saturated.

Yeah, that's one of the tips from tech support--to pick a server closer to me so I already did that. Last I checked, I was at about 9 Mb/s or about half my normal DL.

I was told by their support to switch to PPTP for better speeds.  That helped.

FYI, PPTP is much less secure (https://www.ivpn.net/pptp-vs-l2tp-vs-openvpn) than OpenVPN.  It's probably fine in a pinch, but I wouldn't rely on it for anything truly important.
