Did Anyone Get an HP Touchpad?
« on: August 22, 2011, 12:18:14 AM »

Since HP canceled the Touchpad and WebOS, they decided to sell out the remaining inventory this weekend by dropping the price to $99 for the 16GB version and $150 for the 32GB version (they were originally $600+).  I believe I was able to snag one, but it was an online order so I'll believe it when it gets here.  I also ordered a case and the cool charging dock (which ended up costing more than the device itself) since I'm assuming the accessories will also become hard to find very quickly.  Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what people do with these things.  They have a Kindle app, which alone justifies the purchase if you were considering getting a Kindle...though I already have a Kindle.  There is a lot of talk about Android getting hacked onto the Touchpad, or even Windows 8 when it comes out.  We'll see.  I'm interested to get hands-on with what will probably be the last WebOS device ever produced (and the last remnant of Palm).  Anyway, I'm still crossing my fingers on the order for now.

So...did anyone else get one?

I would have gotten one but everyone is sold out.

I Don't Know if I would even like web os but, if I didn't they are selling for 200+ on ebay, so I probably would of just resold it.

I had one in my hands just after the shit hit the fan .  I was just about to buy one at full price and chose to sleep on it.  I found out that evening it was $99. Even the staff at the store didn't know what was going on.  There was a stack of them.

The Touchpad I ordered should be arriving today.  I'm excited to see what it can do.

Yeah, the only downside to WebOS is the UI from what I hear. But there's some guides online to flash the ROM to Android if you dare.

I've been playing around with it for a bit now.  The UI definitely has upsides and downsides.  A hybrid between WebOS and Android could be awesome.  Some things are better on WebOS, some are better on Android.  There is a really great RSS/Google Reader program that I'm digging called NomNom or something like that.  I also got the Preware repositories set up.  I got a kernel that allows me to run the CPU at 1.5Ghz and, among many other things, a funny mod that changes the "Just type..." bar (universal search) to be the "Make it so..." bar.

WebOS's web browser is great as well, but I can't figure out how to remove a single bookmark without clearing the whole list.  There's probably a way to do it, but I haven't bothered to look around too much.  I've also got to say that WebOS seems more stable than Android (I've used both 2.2 and 2.3 on my Droid X).  It's also easier to "hack" WebOS through Preware than it is to hack/root Android on my Droid X (where I lost root during the Gingerbread update and don't want to SBF to get it back again).  HP actually seems to be completely fine with people hacking the shit out of WebOS, which is cool.

Now the bad things...

Compared to the Android, there just aren't a whole lot of apps.  There's no camera app that I know of by default, and there's no rear camera anyway, so I haven't bothered to download one.  It still seems silly.  The Touchpad also can't compete with Google Maps navigation (luckily I don't need or want it for that).  The Touchpad could also be called the Fingerprintpad.  At least I have it in a case now which is nice.  They also decided to use a proprietary voltage level through the USB charger which is higher than 5v that you get from a generic wall socket USB adapter.  I have USB plugs attached to a couple sockets in my condo but can't use them...at least without getting yelled at.

Is it worth $500?  Hell no.  Is it worth $99?  Hell yes.  It even came with a free 50GB cloud storage account for life (not tied to the Touchpad).  Maybe at some point I'll get Android on here, but for now WebOS is perfectly fine.  I have the Kindle app and I'm happy.

I hope someone got a bunch, then flipped them for a $200 profit.

I would have. But by the time I found out about them, they were sold out.

Did you guys hear about one merchant on Amazon.com overselling over 100k of them? LOL.

Yeah, I was one of the people who placed an order with them (OnSale) and actually got it fulfilled.  I was lucky.  I know people who ordered before me and didn't get theirs.

Yeah, I saw that.  I have a feeling that it won't really go anywhere unless a company like RIM adopts it in their hardware, but we'll see.  I'm waiting for Cyanogen Mod 9 to come out for the TP before fiddling with Android on it.  TBH, I hardly use the Touchpad since I've got an Android phone and computers around all the time.

Yeah, I think WebOS is pretty much dead. It's ok for playing Angry Birds or web surfing.

I had to install Android for Netflix streaming. The only issue I have had so far with Android is the touchscreen has stopped working twice. I don't really use the TP, but my kids do.

I need to just  rooted my Android phone so I can do wireless tethering. Verizon wanted to charge me $20 a month for 2Gb of data.

Yeah, I've got a Droid X (original X, not X2) and put the Vortex Mod ROM on it.  It's so much better than stock.  The battery lasts much longer (so I no longer need JuiceDefender), it performs better, and he put a hack in to make the official tethering app work without signing up for tethering through Verizon.  Pretty nice :)
