Damn you Free Talk Live!!!!
« on: May 30, 2006, 10:31:49 PM »

I have just found myself using the Libertarian propaganda on a BBS that I have been a member of for over 5 years.

We got on the subject of motorcycle helmet laws, and how when repealed the death rate increases in that state.

i explained it by a rise in the amount of registered riders, which exceded the the rise of the death rate.

but I'm dealing with people like

Quote
That's prety shortsighted. Every crash effects all of us. When someone not wearing a helmet crashes, and ends up in the hospital with serious injuries and $150K medical bill, those costs are all reflected in our medcial and insurance costs. This free country bullshit is a silly argument. The government is entitled and is mandated by the people to pass laws which both govern, protect and maintain order...sometimes at the expense of individual rights. Just about every law limts your freedom in some way.

No matter what statistics say - if you crash without a helmet, you're MUCH more likely to get seriously hurt or killed than if you wear one... It's common sense - but that's something not everyone has, it seems, hence the need for laws...

I'm trying my best to stay a republican, but it seems FTL is bound and determine to brainwash me with their propaganda

Here's the post if you're interested.

I didn't want to register on that other forum.

It is just another example that people aren't allowed to be responcible enough to look out for their own best interest.  It also illustrates the problems with forced free medical care for non-paying patients.  The private sector could easily make helmet wearing manditor as a condition of insurance coverage.  If an individual was determined not to wear their helmet, they would have to either find an insurance company that would cover them or risk being left for dead incase of and accident.  All the increase in the death rate does is act as a motivator for people to start wearing a helmet to protect themselves.  We don't need laws to protect the stupid from their own stupidity the problem will take care of itself in that the dumb will die off.

There is a whole class of fallacies that center around statistics.

'If we allow "behavor A", then "X%" more people will die!'

The answer is simple: Yes.

Yes, Freedom means being free to make your own choices and your own mistakes.
Sometimes, those mistakes result in bad outcomes. Like death, or disease, or terrible parenting.

You have a simple choice: allow people -- including yourself -- to be free,
or live with your actions determined by the popular masses and enforced at gunpoint "for your safety."

I have given up trying to convince abject socialists in the value of Freedom. They don't get it. I prefer to suggest that they practice what they preach, and truly live by these ideals. Places to try them (and I am being honest and serious here) include California, Florida, Massachusetts, Vermont, Venezuela, Mexico, Italy, and China.

To see the opposite philosophy in action, look to New Hampshire, Alaska, or Montana.

Yeah, my Dad actually believes in the "two-party system" and that we all should work within that system, as if we had a choice. I wonder what party gave him THAT idea? I don't go out of my way to convince people that libertarian ideas are the right ones. But people who care about me or at least like me are usually interested and ask questions. Some people are just intrigued. But there's definitely a difference in how I approach these discussions with those who are new to the ideas and those who are entrenched.

You two would manipulate your family members (especially old ones) into voting libertarian?  There's a much better way of doing it where no one gets hurt:

Hack the Vote!
