Title: Christmas Thread
Post by: Diogenes The Cynic on November 14, 2011, 09:00:27 PM
Post your trees, house, what you want, etc.

If you celebrate Hannukah, or Kwanza (yeah right) go ahead and put that down in here as well.

I have the Charlie Brown tree, with one ball on it.  Put it up the day before, take it down the day after.

Drinking egg nog, with rum....... listening to some cheery Burl Ives tunes. Hopefully huge snowstorm going on too. Snowstorms on X-Mas are the shit!! So is Burl Ives........ only at christmas time.

Always liked x-mas, even though I dont believe in angels & baby Jesus and all that stuff.

I don't 'get' the Santa Clause part of christmas. Why do adults lead children to believe that an omnipotent fat man keeps a list of everything they do at all times during the year? If you're good, you get some nerf guns, a playstation 3, and an extra dose of Ritalin to shut ya up.

Probably because their parents did it to them.  Not saying that's right...it's just the easiest thing to do for most people.

It's like telling kids to behave because god is watching, but with better results because Santa shows up with tangible rewards in a reasonable time frame. Kids barely understand being good for a few weeks, let alone for a theoretical reward 70 years away.

I was really hated in kindergarten, because I tried to convince everyone Santa wasn't real.

I have two projects I'm knitting for Giftmas, both are about halfway done: an earflap hat I'm sort-of designing for my honorary nephew, with flames going around the hat, and a monster doll for his sister, who still plays with the one she got last year. (I usually don't craft two years in a row for people, unless they request it.) I'm mostly working on the charted part of the hat during conference calls. Another knitted gift is already done: cashmere fingerless mitts (I upcycled the yarn from a sweater I found a thrift store. It's gorgeous, but SO not my color, so I am not feeling any separation pangs in using it for someone else.)

We started buying new ornaments this year, to replace the ones I bought 15-20 years ago. I'm just sick of them, plus, we want some that are ours, that reflect our interests. So far, we found several robots, a dinosaur and a couple of flying saucers (one with an alien). And a pickle.

Shopping-wise, I'm at least done with my niece and nephew, or will be when the stuff I ordered arrives. I found out last night that one of the things I got for my niece has to be reordered, because she has recently decided that pink is evil. Fine by me -  I hate it, too - but last I heard she still loved it, so I ordered hers in pink. At least I have time! And someone else on my list that will love the pink thing. I was so happy to see books on their lists this year. I like buying books for kids, if they want them, but have found that surprising them doesn't always work out. I was able to specifically order ones they wanted, which will make us both happy!

I also decided that instead of donating to whatever my office has going on this year, I'd just find a kid who might not be getting a lot this year and buy something for him/her. A friend is going through a rough patch financially, and we've worked out something her daughter will enjoy. (A pink SMASH folio*) which is what I got for my niece, too. The leftover pink one will go to a pink-loving friend.)

Knitting. I'm seriously jealous. That particular craft exceeds my coordination. And, both a cunning hat AND monster doll = awesome!

Did you learn how to unravel from link on pinterest? Is it tough to do and do you get pretty good lengths?

Nice plan! And thanks for the link to SMASH folio - I think my daughter would like something like that. She thinks diaries are for babies, but this goes into cool journal/scrapbook territory. I've been struggling to figure out some ideas for her other than clothes and $$ for her iPod Touch savings.

Funny, because I feel the exact same way about crochet. I have to do a crochet edging on the hat and I am SO dreading it. (Single crochet around, will take me a while.)

Not Pinterest, but some blog I ran across years ago. I have my own method down to a science. There probably are links on Pinterest! I do get pretty good lengths Most of the time, each sleeve yields a decent-size ball, and the body a couple more for each side. Always get some small balls as well. The key is picking out a sweater with all pieces knit flat, then sewn together (exactly like dog food or cat litter bags, if they were machine-done). If the edges were sewn together, forget it. Then picking out sweaters in colors and fibers you actually want to work with. I've only found 1 cashmere that wasn't a ton of tiny threads, plus one cotton/cashmere blend. You can usually find some merinos and other wools and tons of acrylic. GAP and J Crew sweaters are among the best.

Quote
Guessing she's in the 8-11 age group?

Almost 14, actually. She was hard-core pink only until around the age of 10 or so, then has branched out, but always still liked pink. Now, she is anti-pink.

Next year, she gets cash. I've decided to alternate years. I'm not really happy about exclusively giving gift certificates or cash, but for teens that I don't live with, it's the way it is.

I got one of the Smash folios for myself. Haven't used it a lot, but it's fun. If you get her one, you can beef it up with extra pen/glue stick combos (they come in pink & blue as well as the black), Japanese Washi tape  (patterned masking tape - this place has the best prices/shipping that I've found: cutetape (http://www.cutetape.com/shop/japanese-washi-masking-tape.html)), etc.

I find the same thing with sweaters for felting. Gap, J Crew, Ralph Lauren are my best bets for good wool, cashmere and angora. They shrink evenly. Of course, half the cashmere blends I get ends up being snagged by my daughter as soon as they've been felted, and never make it to the cupcake/puppet/toy/pillow making phase.

For the hat edge, is it something you could do with yarn and a blanket stitch? Or even use regular yarn needle to make a chain stitch as edge?

I could. I could even do a knitted edge. But I'm going to force myself to do the crochet one - it's the only way to learn. That or I'm a masochist.

Someone sent me a box of fabric, and I doubt I could ever use it all. I can send you some.

Love it! That's the same mentality that gets me into half the stuff I do.  8)

Probably the last year we'll be celebrating the entire month leading up to Xmas with the family's worker elf (like elf on a shelf), but Lauren the Elf showed up to run the thanksgiving half marathon with my oldest and me. Note that she's even got a race bib, and had stolen my bagel.

It's fun to pull pranks and hide the elf around the house, but watching my 10 year old willfully suspend reality and spin her wheels to come up with explanations of how "the elf" is up to mischief is not as much fun as when she was younger and this stuff was "magic". Now it's just a lot of work to have as few clues to which one of the parents pulled the prank... not to mention coming up with new ones each year.

I hate Christmas. In the USA where it only really is around the 25th I could keep my self comfortably numb for a 24 hour period. In Norway where it lasts all December this doesn't work as well. Anyway I'll give the spirit of the thing a try. My wife and smallest rug rat made a gingerbread house.

(hate to admit this, but I took a friend's suggestion last year to use hot glue gun to attach the joins of walls & roof... stayed together, and it's not like the kids were going to eat anything but the candy trim anyway after it'd been sitting around for weeks)

Possibly the coolest gifts I've come up with in years - with help from Pinterest, of course.
Plus, I got to play with power tools, which is always fun.

The other night, we saw a stage version of “A Christmas Carol” at the local theater. About the time Mr. Scrooge was being interrogated for the third time about his lack of holiday spirit, I actually developed some sympathy for his plight.

The old businessman, nasty enough to be sure, was not inaccurate in his depiction of the holiday as being based on humbug, a polite term for bullshit. Which belief does not fit this description? That a jolly fat man flies about with the help of reindeer, or that a virgin popped out a savior baby who will save everyone because some ancient man ate a magic fruit?

I then asked myself just why old Scrooge was such a misanthrope. The Ghost of Christmas Past shows plainly enough that the guy was spirited and congenial enough in his younger years. Clearly, some traumatic event must have led to this change in his character. It came to me that it must have had to do with his relationship with Marley. Obviously, it was a very close relationship, enough so that Ebenezer threw over his fiancée to be with him. The two gentlemen, we learn in the story, even shared a house together.

Surely, this was more than simply a friendship in the usual sense. Certainly, much more than just a business arraignment. Even after seven years, Scrooge still refuses to remove his “friend’s” name from the sign over the door.

Then there is that matter of Scrooge’s father kicking him out of the house for some unspecified reason. We’re simply never told why. What had the father found out?

I contend that it was dear Marley’s death on Christmas Eve that forever put the surviving lover off the holiday.

Of course, such things as homosexuality were not discussed among polite company in Victorian times. They were barely discussed in non-polite company. But then as now, such relationships did exist.

Twas the night before Christmas, and all over the net

Libertarian infighting, as good as it gets.

The young cats and rookies, the intellectual debtors

watch left and right scrum over racist news letters.

Should anarchists vote? Or is it a crock?

'Wendy's a statist!' Exclaimed Walter Block.

Anarchists, minarchists, a matter of degrees?

You min-mins are fascists! Awaiting kings decrees!
------------------------------------------------------
Atheist, Christian, Muslim or Jew

We don't fight over faith, like statists do.

We prefer to fight over who should be ruling.

And private vs public vs un-or-homeschooling.

Taxation is theft, and all war is murder.

Further consensus? Good luck, cat herder.

Even semantics are points for a schism,

Call it free-markets, or capitalism?

Austria or Chicago? Friedman or Mises?

Is Piekoff the pope, if Ayn Rand is Jesus?

Konkin or Rothbard? What's on your shelves?

Ah hell, what's the difference, Ron Paul twenty-twelve!

----------------------------------------------

So on Hayek and Murray, on Ron and on Ayn.

On Ludwig and Milton! on Bastiat and Heinlein.

Let's call a truce, friends, for just this one night.

Then on the 26th... libertarians.... FIGHT!

A guy named Jim Object made this up.
