Can a laptop survive a desert enviroment?
« on: August 26, 2009, 03:20:51 PM »

I'm flying out to Burning Man this weekend & I plan on bringing my laptop with me. Not because I actually expect to go online or anything like that. But I'll be visiting lake Tahoe afterwards & once I'm back in civilization, but before I fly home, I plan to download all the podcasts I missed while I was gone.

Will having it out in the desert, even if I keep it wrapped in a towel & never turn it on, kill my laptop??

As long as it doesn't get left in the sun, it should be fine.

Keep it in the car and you'll be fine.  Have fun at Burning Man and take lots of photos.

One of the best things I did at burning man was going to home depot and buying some vent filter material and putting that over the windows of my car. From past experience I knew the dust would get in my car and I wanted to keep the windows open because I store stuff in there. You could also run the laptop inside the car.

However, I only brought my laptop once to burning man, it stayed in the car the whole time I was there, but I did use it to keep in contact on the roadtrips there and back. There really isn't any use for it.

I keep mine in a steel briefcase when I travel, I don't like it getting smashed around in a soft sided carrier.  Other times, you have no choice but to have strappy backpack-styled baggage.  For that, I got a wheeled drag-along backpack.

Finding a hotspot is usually not difficult, I think most McDonalds have them now.  I like having web access, because you never know when you'll need a phone number, send an e-mail, or buy a plane ticket if the shit hits the fan.  Its worth carrying the ten-or-so extra pounds.

Depends on the laptop.  A Panasonic Toughbook can operate at 140F and survive while turned off at 160F.  For an Apple MacBook it's 95F and 113F, respectively.  And my four-year-old Gateway convertible tablet would catch fire at room temperatures if I removed the BIOS overheating protection and ran it at 100% CPU for a few minutes.
