Brother stole $1500 from me. Then got mugged later that night.
« on: December 11, 2010, 12:57:48 PM »

I never thought this would happen and it sounds ridiculous but my 13 year old brother who has some serious issues about getting what he wants tried stealing one of my cans of coke (I would have given it to him if he asked but I didn't want him to think stealing was okay so i stopped him.)

He got pissed off at me when I grabbed it out of his hands and walked away.. and he just kept kicking the door to my locked room and it is hard to control/pick up a 13 year old boy who is in a fit of rage, He actually got to smash the door and get in, took my wallet with $1500 in it and ran off.

I had worked for a long time to save up that money selling refreshments at local parks/skateparks etc (Nobody around here wants to hire anybody over 18 for unskilled jobs because of the high minimum wage.)

Hours later of me looking for him I find him walking the streets of a bad part of town, crying and I find out he was mugged.. and had a bunch of junk food, $245 and an ipod touch left over which he had in his bag.

...I don't know what to do now? I'm getting him to apply for a job when he is old enough to help repay me which will be hard to do. you could threaten to take away all his possessions if he didn't take out the trash and he wouldn't do it.

All I can do now is use that $245 left over and invest in more things to sell. I wonder if many people snitch on people without licences?

It is better then this every night..

Wow, I would be quite angry at him. I think you both learned a few lessons from this, yours being don't carry around your life savings in your wallet. I would go out and buy a safe or lock-box immediately. Perhaps you should have him work it off. I know that is what I would do.

Lean on your folks. His behaviour is partly their responsibility. Get the money from them, then get him to pay them back over time. If that's at all feasible given your families overall financial situation.

Thats a little harsh dont ya think?

I'd maybe cut one of his pinky toes off instead. He'll still remember it everyday, but it wont really gimp him too bad.

Hurting him won't make my money come back and he will think violence is okay.
My parents can't do anything.. welfare :/

Yeah, nobody has found me out or cared so far. I just drive around to different areas with an icebox and sell cans of drink and snacks.
No way am I giving money from this to the government.

Have you tried selling bunches of flowers as well?  There's a guy in Tampa, FL that used to stand at the corner of Hillsborough Ave and Memorial selling roses to people while they waited for the light to change.  I don't know how much he charged or anything, though.  I guess doint it successfully depends on how close you are to busy traffic.

I grow a lot of flowers in my garden, I could try though it would have to be door to door because I don't live in the city.

I'm going to start a topic about making money without the state..

How about convert some of your savings into silver? He'll have a harder time stealing and using it if he ever does that again, plus your savings will grow.

Coins are still less liquid than cash.  Have to convert them into FRNs
